Title: GA-MA790GP-UD4H audio issue, support 192khz sample rate?
Post by: randomguy on December 13, 2016, 02:29:42 am
Hello.  I my system has a GA-MA790GP-UD4H motherboard with its onboard ALC889A audio codec chip.  I am trying to get audio to play and record with 192khz sample rate, without any success.

I started using the Windows audio driver on the Gigabyte driver page, that is ver. 5.10.0.5780 (12/10/2009).  I also tried the driver from Realtek, ver 5.10.0.7111 (12/10/2013).  With either driver installed I can't get the audio output to generate frequencies above 20khz.  I can't find any options to set output sampling rates.  I have tried to get better sampling rates under Windows and FreeBSD.  Both O/S work fine playing audio, but just limits sample rate to 48khz.

My testing involves playing a sine wave sweep from 0-96khz, 192khz FLAC file, output through the "line out".  I monitor the output with oscilloscope.  Output falls to zero for frequencies above 20khz.

I read on Realtek's web page that the ALC889 supports up to 192khz sample rate:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/products/productsView.aspx?Langid=1&PFid=28&Level=5&Conn=4&ProdID=173

* Ten DAC channels support 16/20/24-bit PCM format for 7.1 sound playback, ....
* Three stereo ADCs support 16/20/24-bit PCM format, multiple stereo recording
* All DACs supports 44.1k/48k/88.2k/96k/176.4k/192kHz sample rate
* All ADCs supports 44.1k/48k/88.2k/96k/176.4k/192kHz sample rate

I also found the datasheet for ALC889 which confirms it supports 192khz.

Has anyone else gotten better than 48khz sample rates from this motherboard or other ALC889 based motherboards?  If so, How?   Thanks for any help getting my system to work with higher sample rates.

Yes, for me it's all there and I have the same sound chip

Is there anyway you can confirm that it actually does record/play sample rates higher than 48khz?  From what I understand, windows has some built-in resampling system.

I looked up your MB in your tagline: GA-990FXA-UD3v4.0.  Gigabyte's specifications for that MB say it has a ALC889, whereas my motherboard has a ALC889A.  I wonder what the difference is.

Here is a screenshot of my audio manager.

What version of Windows are you running?

Have you tried uninstalling the Gigabyte Realtek Audio Manager software and handling audio through the Microsoft Sound System?

I am not that deep into recording but what my AMD driver tells me is this:

I have Windows XP sp3 installed.  Old?  Yes, but it should give full support for this motherboard.    I don't actually want to use windows, but that is the version of windows that I have available for this computer.  I am more interested in using a unix operating system, Freebsd or Linux.  Freebsd supports the sound on this motherboard, out of box.  However, the playback does not go above ~20khz when playing 192khz files, indicating the sample rate is stuck at 44.1 or 48khz.

I did try uninstalling the Gigabyte audio manager.  I then installed the latest Realtek drivers (0001-WDM_R274.zip).  The results were the same.  I don't know how sound could work properly without a Realtek/Gigabyte driver.  I don't know what "Microsoft Sound System" is.  Google gives a few results about something from the MS-DOS 1990's era systems.

I tried it, but it gives me a message that the driver is not supported on my operating system (XP).  Looks like Realtek v 2.74 is the latest for this system.  Maybe I can try to find a newer version of windows.  A lot of trouble for testing.  I would really rather just use a unix operating system.
