Title: Updated Gigabyte Gaming 6 to latest bios. Now thunderbolt 3 ports don't work.
Post by: robbinbanks on March 04, 2017, 06:13:28 pm
So I updated my Gaming 6 Motherboard to the latest bios and I can't for the life of me get my system to recognize the thunderbolt ports. Everything is enabled as it should be. I can get it to recognize my thunderbolt 2 add on card, but the onboard ports won't show up for anything. I've uninstalled/re-installed the USB 3.1 drivers. Nothing shows up, even in the device manager. I've tried the USB 3.1 FW update tool from Gigabyte but it comes up with a prompt to restart my computer twice and it's just and endless loop of that. Anyone have any ideas of what to do?

Have you tried pulling the battery with the mains disconnected, then press and hold the power button for 10 sec to discharge any residual charge.  Reinstall, power on again, enter BIOS and disable TB.  F10 save and restart.  Now shutdown.  Power up again, enter BIOS and re-enable TB.  F10 to save and restart.  Allow windows to boot.  Results?

If you see the updater utility again, its what's causing the loop.  See if you can uninstall it from Programs and Features and repeat all the steps above.  Once you are back, try installing TB using the update utility again.

No I haven't done that yet. Don't mean to sound dumb but what do you mean by "mains"?  I'll try tonight and hopefully make some progress.
Also I figured I'd just try the update utility to see if it would fix anything. After the 2 restarts it just pops up again asking me to restart twice again. I'll try clearing cmos and re/disabling thunderbolt and see what happens

Okay so here's what I tried.

Reset cmos and disable thunderbolt.
Reboot windows then re-enable thunderbolt.
Tried USB 3.1 FW update utility with thunderbolt enabled/disabled, still ask for two reboots and never makes progress. Even reinstalled update utility.

Still not sure what to do  :-\ Emailed Gigabyte support but who knows how long it'll be before they get back to me. Any more ideas?

Is the BIOS beta? if so there you go, you are a beta tester.

Gigabyte probably abandoned Intel boards to focus on AMD ones.

No they seem to be official ones on their page,  doesn't say anything about being beta

Ok, so thankfully got it working. Did some research and it turns out a bunch of people have been having problems with the f20 bios. Unfortunately it doesn't let you downgrade at all, so what I had to do was create a bootable dos drive and downgrade it from there. There's already a whole topic about downgrading which I'll link too. Thanks for your help though, much appreciated :D

Latest BIOS on product's page is F21.  States improved Thunderbolt compatibility FWIW.  Not suggesting that you upgrade if you have a working system.  F20 is problematic, yes well documented.

Meant F20 and up bios. I could not get the onboard thunderbolt ports to show up whatsoever on F20 or F21. F21 was definitely more stable but I couldn't get it working. I do get an error 51 when thunderbolt is enabled, (goes away once logged in windows ) on F3 bios.  I might try the F21 bios again since I know I can downgrade.

Do you have any direct contact with someone that knows what they are doing and has access to BIOS development in gigabyte's support?  Through a support ticket they game me no information other that Beta bioses werent reliable.

Because these bioses for Intel gigabyte boards are broken for far too long and i would like to know if they at least acknowledge it or have an expected timeframe for a new series of bioses to be released.  Is there another forum which gigabyte actually participates?

Hey, Shadowsports!  I'm continuing to have TB problems with my Hackintosh system, and so am looking for info on the F21 bios (for my GA-Z170X-UD5 TH) and the description on the BIOS download section only says  "1. V core Voltage adjust".

I've looked on a few other mobo models' pages, and it always seems to say the same.

Where are you seeing info about improved Thunderbolt compatibility?

Thanks!
