Title: Ram upgrade left me with a hard drive blue screen error
Post by: nigel on February 11, 2018, 07:55:49 pm
Hi all
i am hoping some one can point me in the right direction,
i am using the GA-Z77-D3H 1.1
My problem started when i removed my 2x 4gb of corsair CM3B4G2C1600L9L , i replaced them with 2x 8gb of corsair CML16GX3M2A1600C9 , on restarting the pc things felt slightly unstable , i went into the bios and removed the profile that was set up for the old ram an set everything to auto. after that the pc would not boot up , so i put the old ram back in and reset the old profile, but the pc still will not boot, i have also installed a newer bios , now when i start the pc i get a blue screen telling me there is a hard drive issue , any advice is welcome

Greetings Nigel,
Welcome to the forums.  Rev 1.1 MB.

Please provide more details about the following:

-What BIOS were you using originally?
-What BIOS did you upgrade to?

-Were you running an actual BIOS profile? Or is this the term you are using to describe the settings you were using when the system started successfully with the old RAM installed?

-What slots do you have the DIMMs installed in?

-What is the exact STOP error you receive regarding your boot device?  [example] 0x0000007B

-What OS are you running?

-Do you have a back up of your OS and/or data?

If not already done, please perform a CLR_CMOS and Load Set Up Defaults with the old RAM installed.  If its properly detected, we can try to work on the BSOD issue.

Sorry for the double post above.  Not sure how that happened.

So with the old RAM installed, its properly detected in BIOS.  Let's try to get the OS booting again before working on the memory upgrade.

Need to rely on your own knowledge of your system here.

Start here:

-Review your BIOS settings
-Confirm SATA is set to what it was previously (example) AHCI or IDE
-Confirm the controller operate mode is set correctly RAID, AHCI, etc.
-Confirm the disk appears correctly in your boot order

F10 to save and allow the system to restart.  Result?

If the above fails, start the system, tap F8 repeatedly to attempt to use "Last Know Good Configuration".  System will restart.  Result?

Next step (if needed) start the system from a windows 7 install CD, select the Recovery Console or Repair My Computer.

-Try Start Up Repair
When this completes, select command Prompt and run the Fixboot command

Then restart.  Result?

Last thing I would try is System Restore from the Recovery Console.  There are other recovery steps, but at that point, you can reinstall about as quickly.

Just a recommendation.  A back up image of your OS allows you to recover in about 8 minutes.

Macrium Reflect and http://redobackup.org/download.php (http://redobackup.org/download.php)  are both FREE.
