Title: Spectre vulnerability - BIOS update
Post by: JohnnyB691 on February 15, 2018, 07:49:26 am
Do you know when an actual Bios update will be released for my Gigabyte motherboard (GA-Z97X-Gaming 3 (rev. 1.1) ), in order to address the Spectre vulnerability?

Currently this issue is not addressed with the current Bios version (F7), also the below tool will show you the actual results:

There are no firm release dates.  This has been an ongoing discussion here.  The fixes will come from intel, AMD and Microsoft and will be cumulative, taking as I predicted, several months to be tested and deployed.  No single manufacturer has a solution (regardless of what they might claim) and being first to that finish line doesn't mean you win.  Earlier this week more exploits were identified.  Be patient.  The vulnerabilities have been present for ages, long before your devils canyon or broadwell chip was produced.  There is nothing you can do.

I see this is your first post, so welcome to the forums.   :)

Meltdown has already been neutralized through windows updates, the spectre update which requires a microcode, had been released, but has issues and Intel pulled it from distribution (gigabyte didnt btw, broken uefi updates with this flawed microcode are still online), got newer updated versions which has been deployed today by Intel, ball is on gigabyte's court now:

Still no updated release from gigabyte I see. Today Intel released a batch for Ivy and Sandy Bridge:

Last bit I read from Intel said there were handing deployment over to Microsoft.  They would be cumulative windows updates patching the microcode.  This is actually safer than a BIOS update.

Microsoft should provide microcode updates, as linux has done, has nothing to do with it being patched on the hardware to work independently from the OS or OS version you choose to install.
