Title: gigabyte 890fxa ud7 dead after bios upgrade
Post by: moorhen2 on July 20, 2010, 08:04:52 pm
Hi,first post on here,i purchased a gigabyte 890fxa ud7 about three weeks ago, flashed to the latest bios,F2a,no problems, got a beta bios from Gigabyte,F3D,flashed to that, would'nt post, would get as far as C1 on the post led's on the board, nothing more, tried every known action,ie,remove power leed from PSU,remove 24 pin and 8 pin power leeds from board, press power button on case to discharge the board, removed battery etc etc, nothing worked.Contacted Gigabyte about this, informed me it was probably a faulty bios chip,or corrupt bios, contact vendor. This i did, returned board under RMA,fault was found.

Replacement recieved today, flashed the bios,or tried to,guess what, same thing happened again,i have been building pc's for many years, flashed bios's thousands of times,so i am not a noob, lol, mind you this is the first Gigabyte board i have ever owned, normaly use Asus,Msi,so to me there has to be a problem with Q-flash,or the F3D bios is flawed,i'm getting sent another replacement, but seriously wondering what the issue is with the UD7,any ideas from you good people would help me a lot.Thank's in advance.

Well usually with a replacement board they have installed the latest BIOS version already. Both the BIOSs you quoted are beta versions and why did you want to flash it anyway unless you were having some sort of problem?
Did you try to reset the CMOS and then set the BIOS defaults?

Yeh,done all that, and more, but not being able to get to bios screen limits what you can do,all correct procedures taken before flashing the bios,to have this happen twice is strange to say the least.

yes a definite bummer. You can load BIOS defaults by pressing F7 after clearing the CMOS though.

I definitely wouldn't try flashing the BIOS to F3D this next time. Even though they say "third time lucky" I don't think I would chance it! ;)

Yeh,i wont be doing that again, just read on another forum someone has had the exact same problem with bios F3d,so me think's it's a bad bios.

A got note to follow is never flash bios unless you have to. One is for processor support that you might get or two is if you are having problems. I've flashed hundreds of bios and still have it go bad once in a while i will never flash a customers bios with a beta unless i know it is going to address the problem they are having.

I think you are probably right but i am surprised that it hasn't been picked up before now as most beta BIOS updates are tested elsewhere before being put on Gigabyte's website.

I am into extreme overclocking,so i use beta bios's to try and get the last bit out of a mobo, but generaly only flash to resolve a board problem like you said,i also have over 30 years in the pc game, lol!!!

Yes, go ahead. It should be very interesting to see, especially if the "boys" you have sent round are as old as you!
(By the way, I live in a block of flats on the 14th floor!)
