My computer. I am also planning a custom case. I do not know if i will be building it from scratch or taking a old tower case and modding it.

As promised, a couple pics of my NH-D14 in my Antec 900.  Offshore right now, so these are the only ones I got.

Resized for ease of looking.

Great, much better!  ;) I see that you also disliked the mesh on the side panel.

Post by: CanUK on November 19, 2010, 04:04:02 am
Yeah, well, to be honest there was a little fan clip that was in the way.  So I had two choices; remove the clip or the mesh.  I chose the mesh and like the overall look.  I also took time to do proper cable management, hard to tell, but all the cables are now run along the sides of the case.  Overall, much better airflow.

Edit:  As a result, I have been helping people now on overclockers.com with this cooler and my case :D

Thanks, glad you like it, but it is even better now as I have been busy modding a bit more. Just waiting for one more piece to arrive and I can finish it for now. Not that it is ever finished. Hehe. ;)

Here is mine. My case is pretty small even for a mid tower (18.43" x 17.20" x 7.52"). Wires are extremely hard to hid but majority of the wires are hidden behind the 3.5 bays. The main one showing is the 24pin. Running 3 Xigmatek 120mm 61cfm fans (intake, side, exhaust), 1 120mm Antec 3 speed, and the 120mm power supply fan w/ CPU idle temps around 36-37c.

A very nice build yourself and one to be proud of. Considering you are only using a standard case the wiring  etc is very neat. That Scythe Mugen2 is a big cooler for that case eh. Well done.  ;)

There's one thing I want to ask - how did you manage to run SLI on GA-790XTA-UD4? I always thought it's a crossfire only MB?

Huh, that's quite neat! Makes you wonder why all these companies can't figure out a deal to make all boards working with both SLI and crossfire ( considering that it's clearly software related limitation ).

Having seen the damage a can of that stuff can do to computer components I wouldn't  have them that close to my build.

all the cans was emptied before i resived my ud9(and other components) i was just to lazy(wantet to boot the rig so bad  ;D ) to clean up, i removed them now ;)

Nice.

Never would the shorter circuit, if you put the power supply in the bottom of the case, and put the radiator on the top, but inside the case?

Certainly looks a lot nicer in the case than strewn all over the table with the Coke cans. ;D

Nice tidy build there now. I like to see good cable management like that, makes all the difference.

nice seeing all these pics. I am considering to put mine, but only the external setting. the internal is really an embarrasement. Lots of untidy cables (I should have used modulated PSU or bigger casing). Not really a good setting inside.... Maybe instead I should post the screen capture of my computer properties and Windows Experience Index.

The liquid I use is distilled water with antifreeze ELF. 1/4 antifreeze 3/4 water distilled

I like the pump top from EK very much and will order one for my Liang vario as it makes it much easier to use smaller diameter hose connections and looks cleaner too.

I use just distilled water in my loop with just a few drops of bleach to act as a bacteriocide. Do you get any problems with biological build up in your system ?
Title: Re: Pictures of Members Computers
Post by: D4L70N on March 16, 2011, 09:01:13 pm
Yes, the top of the pump is great because you can put the fitting / hose, as they want.

And no, I have no problems with water and antifreeze brings the biocide, and is also anti-foaming.

jannie these are some great PCs you have there! The office or whatever that room is is even better, though ;D. I mean, DAT SHELF! :o

I'm afraid I don't have anything even remotely gorgeous to show but here I go ;). Just one pic for the time being as I didn't even have the energy to take it properly. I've spent about an hour fighting with that bottom fan. I don't know if this is something that only Gentle Typhoons experience but that bottom air intake is normally way too close to the fan. It caused a mighty whine at higher RPMs that at least doubled overall case noise. Because I didn't have anything else, I used 2 motherboard spacers to get it far enough.

(http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/7523/img3674v2.jpg) (http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/7523/img3674v2.jpg)

I have no idea why the image got distorted in the top right corner.

I know there's a lot of multicolored cables around but I don't think I can do much better than this. I can't really find more space to tuck them away. The bane of non-modular PSUs, I suppose :P.

I noticed the same that the Typhoons are very close to the surface  of the mount. What I would suggest is that you get an old fan of the same size (or even a cheepo fan) and rip the centre out so you have just the surround and use that as a spacer.

If you really want to get rid of the multicoloured cables you could sleeve them. Most modders do this and it does give a nice finish to the job. A bit fiddly but worth it.

Soar, you really don't want to know how it looks on the other side. Suffice to say that it's one huge tangle of cables that barely fit ;D.

I just may go for it but probably no sooner than around summer. Won't make that much of a difference anyway as most of the non-black cables are SATA ones and I don't really see the point of modifying them. That leaves POWER, HDD, etc. cables and motherboard power extension. Right, GT fans and eventually the rear exhaust, too.

In the end, it doesn't matter all that much as normally you won't see more than the front and right panel of my case. Most of the time it's just sitting there under my desk :P.

Man, I'd like to paint it black inside but I don't have the means to do it.
Title: Re: Pictures of Members Computers

No as you say a lot of the coloured cables are SATA but if you wanted to it is easy to change them for black ones to match the rest. I even got some round rather than flat SATA cables which are even less conspicuous.

Hi Soar, the cooler is Noctua NH-U12P-SE2 CPU Cooler, I was going to go for the Noctua NH-D14 Processor cooler, But as Absic says ITS BIG and it covers your memory slots, The only thing I find strange is that its mounted vertically and this is the only way I can mount it with the brackets supplied, but it does the job ok.

Yes, for now, my "other side" also looks like a total rats nest!  In time I'll clean in up.  But for now, I am so happy the machine works and works well!

I do not understand not having the means to paint the inside...

For me, it was as simple as buying one can of black spray paint, removing minimal amount of hardware, and going outside and spray painting it.  It only took me about an hour and now I am glad I did it before the assembly.

To do it real good, you should rough it up with steel wool or fine [220 grit] sandpaper, choose a warm day [70f degrees or higher], tape off the parts you do not want painted, and just do it [using several fine coats of paint are much better than one thick coat, like I did]!  It is much easier than it appears...

Why is this so challenging for you?

Please help me to understand.

Soar

No I would have to agree with Soar. There is no real problem apart from maybe having the time that should stop you from painting the inside. Not exactly rocket science! Best to wipe all down with spirit, preferably acetone, first.

Ah, well, I haven't really done something like this before and I've seen people taking their HAFs apart to paint them and that seemed rather bothersome to do. If it's this simple then I may just give it a try over the summer. About not having the means, let's just say that I don't have a lot of space to do something like this atm.
Title: Re: Pictures of Members Computers
Post by: Dark Mantis on March 31, 2011, 10:34:39 am
As long as you have enough room to strip your computer down then you should be alright. Just make sure that you put the case on some paper or something else like that to stop the overspray. Hold the can about 20-25 cm away from the surface and spray in light even strokes. Build up the finish rather than trying to lay on to much at once that way you don't get runs and it dries quicker. You can aid drying with a hairdryer if necessary.

Looks like a nice review and I will struggle though it all later when I have more time as my Spanish is a little rusty now. Keep meaning to brush up on it.

I know what you mean as I looked into it regarding a Plexiglas case with the logo laser etched onto the front. Big bucks.

I toke some pictures of my pc, but with the webcam of my laptop; if I use my phone it probably be even worse pictures :P
I toke me quite some hours to get the cables like this, not bad I think for do this first time but it's not really finnish yet. I got a fancontroller wich gives a 13 extra cables  :-\ I still have to figur out how to let all those power/temp sensor cables run. And after have to replace all those bindingstrips. I just used of those deepfreezer bags binders for the moment.

When is complete finnished all, I'll get someones dig.cam. to make better pictures. At the windowed side I've not so much place to put the laptop now.

I will look forward to the completed project pictures.  ;)

Thx mate ;) Really glad I picked this CM case because it looks cool AND it's quite easy to work in and the price was well ok.

I've connected the fancontroller in the late afternoon. Looks cool, but the picture isn't so good. It was alot of extra cable, I think not really need to put 6 temp sensors. 4-5 is enough. I have to redo all the cabling again a time, but not too soon I think, it's alot of work!

Thar's the only problem with doing a really nice cable management job, every time you want to change something you have to rip it apart and change it all.

Nice. From memory I seem to remember the the top picture was of Rand Corporation's envisionment of a home computer back in about 1954. Yes I was going to buy one too but that monitor put me off as it used to make my neck ache!  ;)

Interesting setup for the gaming rig though. Everything at your fingertips there for certain!

Quite a gaming setup you have there Ripjaws. What games do we play?

Myself, I'm a big Total War fan and at the moment playing alot Shogun 2. Only the first Shogun and Medieval I never got, but I cannot wait for Medieval 3, 2 was so great I think I unpatiently want to see the game with graphics of today. I build this computer for this, serieusly. I saw on youtube what I was missing all playing on my laptop with low settings. Other games I play now & then is TF2, L4D2, FM11(seldom actually because it ask alot of time to play it), GRID, N4S hot pursuit (at moment) but I have alot more games on Steam.. I can like play something like Settlers also.... I think I am going to get Driver San Fransisco also. Maybe FM12 if I can find it at least half the normal price.
I should get me Starcraft 2 also, I loved playing the first.
;D

Certainly beats the case I had before; that was a "cheap" £30 one from the local shop. I managed to get a year out of that case until I decided to get this one. Ive had it for over a year.

About the only thing I have done though is accidentally killed a fan for it measuring up for part of the update Im planning, but I might replace that fan with an LED one anyway ;)

when I bought my case they still came with a silver (unpainted) inside. So the first job was to  make a few alterations to the windows and side panel etc before spraying everything black. Looks so muchj better now. I see that they supply them painted inside from new now. Big improvement.

Sounds like an idea (mines silver or grey as I would call it. Actually you could probably tell that from the pictures)

It also sounds like a lot of hard work and I dont know if I can be bothered painting all the silver black (and it would have to be done in matt black to match the rest of the case)

EDIT:
Actually, should I show my "rats nest"?
Title: Re: Pictures of Members Computers

Hey, it doesn't hurt to show the mess as it is now. You can then glory in how much of an improvement it is when you do the cable management.

I stripped the whole case down before painting it inside. Literaly removed every last nut and bolt but it wan't such a bad job to be honest as the case is designed well. I then sprayed the whole case inside and out so everything matched exactly. It is a hassle but worth doing especially if you intend to show off the inside of the case with lights etc.

Ok, heres the outside without using the flash (fan removed as this is the one that is damaged)

And this is the area where I really have a problem:

Ive uploaded a zoomed in photo of the area in question, but I dont think its really worth posting here as I think you can tell where it is.

The plan:

For a start that grey IDE cable has to go. In fact if Im really honest that drive its connected to can disappear as well ;)

New power supply as the 530W is getting old and I think its out of warranty soon. A new one has already been recommended (http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,7267.msg61539.html#msg61539) so I dont need any help for that (except just to check the length of the cables)

New motherboard to get fitted with the same CPU heatsink (for now) and change of memory (think Ive just got to decide on colour but thats about it)

New CPU heatsink. Again one has been chosen (and yet to be brought)

New graphics card (will save up for that first)

Might do some lights. Another LED fan is defo planned at least.

No plans for how long it will take; it will get done when its done

It's not nearly as bad as you lead us to believe! I thought there was cables everywhere but once you get shot of the IDE ribbon that will make a big difference. ;)

Ok, so it is bad, but its not as bad as I thought? Ok, Im being too harsh on myself again (like always ;))

I know that it can be improved dramatically though. I rewired another one of my mates PC up after I done mine and that looked really neat in my opinion (just a shame I didnt grab a pic of the wiring), yet that was in a much smaller case.

once you get shot of the IDE ribbon that will make a big difference. ;)
Well, we shall see. Ive got stuff lying around and get second hand parts fairly easily enough so if I really want another SATA DVD drive I can probably get a second hand one on the cheap ;)

What I really need to do is decide on what Im doing with my card reader (thats the wire thats disconnected); I hardly use it.

Oh, and theres a slight give-away as to what board Im putting in the bottom photo, to the right but in the middle (if you know what I mean). Didnt think that was in the the photo  :-X

Nice pair of machines there Excavator. Your wife's in particular is very tidy.

I have a couple of testbenchs that I use mainly for reviewing devices and I find them invaluable for taking photos and swapping out components but I wouldn't use them all the time as they are a pain to keep clean. ;)

OK, I know I said I wouldn't do it but......

well after much persuading and with help and advice from Dark Mantis, Aussie Allan (Thanks to both of you for this) & hours of research on the internet I have finally bitten the bullet and gone down the water cooling route.

BEFORE:
(http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/4379/absicwater001.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/26/absicwater001.jpg/)

With the Noctua NH-D14, which has proven to be an excellent Air Cooler and has given me some really remarkable O/C results with both AMD and my Intel rig.

AFTER:
(http://img853.imageshack.us/img853/9299/absicwater003.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/853/absicwater003.jpg/)

Now, there's not really a lot my space inside my case which is the NZXT Tempest Evo, so I did have to dig out a chainsaw (good piece of advice from DM here!) to do a little modification but no one said it would be easy.

ALL LIT UP AND PRETTY!
(http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/2537/absicwater002.jpg) (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/535/absicwater002.jpg/)

And now the system is up and running. Already, I have noticed that things are much cooler and I have my i5 2500k humming along at 4.6GHz with the CPU showing 27C (down from nearly 40C on air) at idle and up to around 40C under full load (further testing needed to qualify this result) with the room showing an ambient temperature of 22C. Now hopefully, I will be able to break the 5.2GHz I got with the Noctua Cooler. ;)

The system is now a bit quieter than before, although I do find the occasional gurgle of water, passing through the reservoir, a little disconcerting.

For those who are interested, the main water cooling components in this build are:
XSPC RayStorm CPU Block
XSPC Single Bay Reservoir
Laing D5 Vario 12V Pump (running at setting 3 at the present)
Koolanc Laing D5 Pump Top
Phobya G-Changer 360mm Radiator
13-16mm (1/2") Tubing

Hi DM thanks for your comments and once again, thanks for your support, help and advice. You helped make the whole thing a lot easier.

Not totally happy with everything yet and am considering a larger chassis to put everything into. The bottom of the case, which I avoided showing in the pictures, looks a real dog's dinner as it is a bit cramped and there is not enough room for some really neat and tidy cable management. Also, I need to get a couple of UV lights into the case, to really show things off. Still, I like to think of it as a work in progress and it does give me something to look forward to over the coming months.

That said, the actual loop build was pretty painless. I had a minor issue with one of the connectors on the back of the reservoir leaking, when I first started to fill it, but that was easily resolved. Everything is now working as it should and I have to say that last night, I did feel a touch of pride when I turned the lights off and saw the PC in all its glory, glowing in the dark.

not many people know this but I am an amateur  sumerologst and Cuneiform person. Ancient sumer and its writing is the single biggest passion in my life after my children:)

Essentialy I got tired of the mods based on games etc so I decided to do something different and what better than something based upon ancient Sumer:D:D:DD:D

aye

my next project (apart the the little owl project im working on now) is another unique one.........

Rather than MOD  a case it is essentialy a case built from scratch but in the shape of a model.

The next one though based on the theme of ancient Sumer again is a Unique one.

Its an Ancient SUmerian Ziggurat

Hi All

So it's been nearly 2 years since this thread was started... long time indeed. Thanks for posting all of these wonderful pics.

I've created special Facebook album (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.472242899456028.123276.246415092038811) with such photos. If you want your rig to be posted there just upload the picture of your rig on our Facebook timeline (wall) (http://www.facebook.com/GIGABYTE.UK) with short description (what's inside) and you should see it in the album soon.

Nothing Special, but I have build 3 or these and of course I use as many Gigabyte parts as I can since I've used them for 10 years or so.

I've built these for office use, so there are not fancy lighting features to show  off :).

I7 3770k, Gigabyte Radeon 7870 (Nice and quiet!), 8GB of GSkill Ram, Z77-UD3H Mobo, 700Watt ToPower PSU, Kingston 120GB SSD, Seagate 2TB HDD. Overclocking mildly to 4.2Ghz.

Fun part is, these are made to run Photoshop and other GFX design programs, and does a bang-up job doing it!
