Title: GV-N460OC-1GI problem
Post by: neq on September 06, 2010, 10:18:47 am
The problem is as it follows, I bought the  GV-N460OC-1GI few weeks ago, right after a changed my old 8800gts 512 to this one my system became unstable. When I'm playing any dx9 games either the game crashes or the whole system crashes. This started appering when I changed the graphics card. I have reinstalled my w7 a couple of times so it's should be anything to do with it. I have had few times a bluescreen and there has been an erro which has something to do with direct x and when I studied the erro code from the net I found out it had something to do with the sounds. So I started wondering could it be that my Sound Blaster Extreme Audio and the new 460gtx's audio drivers can't play along with each other? I still haven't tested if I remove the sound card from my comp and try to play with the integrated one, that one is scheduled for tonight.

Anyone else with a similar problem?

Motherbord is an ASUS P7P55D LE and I'm running it on kingston 1600MhZ ddr3 XMP memories.

Help and a solution for the problem would be much appreciated.

Oh, and I'm using the newest nvidia drivers 258.96.

Hi there,

there seems to have been a lot of issues with the latest NVidia Drivers (one of the main reasons I switched to ATI) and it might be better if you try one of the earlier releases as this can sometimes help.

Just to add to what absic has already told you, and good advice I might add, try disabling the sound card in Device Manager rather than removing it physically. However I think it is more likely that it is the sound faction of the DirectX or the video card that are causing the problem.

i have this system crash problem before then i use this guide to cleanly uninstall GeForce driver, my game works now but there is still the problem of high dpc that many ppl face. still waiting for new drivers release from nvidia....  >:(

The high dpc latency issues are probably caused by the leftover remnants of the graphics drivers. Once installed programs are hard to get rid of totally and usually leave some residue behind, dlls etc.

Although it is really annoying I have often found that reinstalling the OS is the best route when faced with problem drivers.

In fact, I now keep a disk image of the basic windows install, without any drivers installed, so that I can do just that if I'm faced with such problems.

I am in total agreement with absic here and have the same approach. It can save a lot of time and trouble and only the updated drivers need installing seperately. 8)

I tested it out with my sound card disabled and used the intergrated one but still an dx error. So it's not the soundcard that was the reason. Just tried with my old graphics card and no errors appear what so ever on MW2. Worked fine, though lower fps. And I used the same drivers as I used with the 460gtx that I found from anatechs site, but theu just prevented the whole system to crash. So I'm thinking should I return the 460gtx or wait for new drivers for it?

If it's any consolation you are far from alone with this problem. The drivers have been causing lots of people headaches and as far as I can see there is no option(other than replacing the card) but to wait for new drivers to be released. :-\

didn't want to start new topic so here goes;

recently purchased one of these cards and i got some problems, in gpu-z card will stay in pcie-x 8 2.0 instead of 16
have some stability on start up problems as well, sometimes when i reboot my pc it reports 1 long 2 short beeps, which means display adapter problem, after restart it goes as it should. i don't have any in game crashes or anything but it's really bugging me that my gtx260 was perfectly working @ x16 2.0 and 460 just does not, i'm not satisfied with performance either, it may well perform decently in 3dmark vantage 13-16000 score depends on the driver i use, but gaming performance could've been better, either i have a half broken card or issue lies somewhere else but i don't know, currently still owe 8800 gt which has no such issues and reports as x16 2.0, so is 8500gt 1gb

Should i rma the card or figure something else, any help would be appreciated.

My specs:

Core i5 750 Asus P7P55D Pro Ocz 4gb DDr3 1333 low voltage PSU FSP Everest 600W 85 Plus 72 A combined

Well all I can say is a lot of people are having problems with this card. A lot of them may be down to driver issues and so I would suggest that you try the latest ones. New beta version out today apparently. Failing that make sure that the card connectors are all looking alright(power and slot). If you still don't have any joy I would recommend RMA. :-\

I did triple and quantum checked the cables and installed numerous drivers, tried all 3 pcie-x ports, did try new driver as well, i think it caused more problems than resolved any, it completely disabled my mobo's audio driver which i had to reinstall afterwards still it will report as x8, this alone should be classified as none fully functioned product as it was advertised especially when my mobo supports it so is older generation of the video cards, in any case i always thought of gigabyte as a quality products and went after this version of the card mainly cause of the custom dual cooler and good reviews, sadly i couldn't enjoy it as i could've and probalby got a bad batch or something.

Edit:
what i found out in this thread http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2477.15.html is that this card specifically may require more amps per rail than my psu delivers which is 18ax4rails, hmm perhaps if i swap my psu with one strong single rail it will resolve my problem, food for thought

Yes a lot of problems are due to the split 12v rails that a lot of PSU manufacturers use in their devices. This is why we often ask members for their PSU details alongside everything else.

Maybe so, bad bios settings from gigabyte, but it still doesn't explain the card operating @x8 2.0 instead of 16 2.0

Well it could just be a reporting error due to the cards firmware/drivers but even assuming it is correct it maybe a fault on the card itself.

bios update didn't fix anything it still won't boot sometimes, getting stucked on the boot, but once it's in windows it's stable, i did fresh reinstall of w7 pro x64 bit and it still reports as x8 but now it stuck in 1.1, this is just great ::)

i did reinstall the drivers after bios update

you mean different mobo, i already did that and even tried dedicated to video card only psu with 30a on single rail

after couple of reboots it got to pcie x8 2.0 but it just doesn't work at x16, i know there is not much of a difference but i can see that the card doesn't perform very well in games overall and in no way it's my mobo or cpu that holding it back :-\

guess i have to rma and be at peace with myself

One last thing that occurred to me what PCIE slot have you got it in?
Title: Re: GV-N460OC-1GI problem
Post by: Mortibus on September 17, 2010, 10:51:49 pm
i tried in all of them obviously, all 3 of them support x16 and only operate @x8 when two or more cards are used
it's not my first build, i've been building pc's for myself and friends for about 8 years, this very pc handled 2 8800gt 512 mb (which combined use twise more than single 460) from different brands in sli for about 2 weeks, just before i got this card and it performed very well, i just thought i'll get something new and refreshing, well it aint went through as i thought it would

Well I also do quite a lot on the ASUS Forums so I am well aquainted with that site and checked up on your motherboard's manual. It states that for PCIE x16 you must use the BLUE slot the BLACK slot is x16 but only at 4 link. It does say to run the GPU in the blue slot if you only have a single card.

yeah i know that the blue one is a main slot, which i use for a single card solutuon and all other cards that i tested so far operate @x16 2.0 except for a 460, starting to sound like a broken record now :P

Yes I know what you mean, but we have to make sure that we are precise in our questions and answers. Well I cant think of any other tests or advice I can give you apart from RMA the sucker.  ;)

Actually there are a terrific number of people having problems with the nVidea cards at the moment. Mainly down to bad drivers I think or at least I hope so. :-\
