Title: New AMD Processor causes PC to crash
Post by: Geastrum on September 09, 2010, 10:12:11 pm
I have a GA-MA74GM-S2H motherboard and have changed my processor from an AMD Athlon Dual Core 6400 to a AMD Phenom 2 X4 945. The install went with no problems and the new chip was supplied with a new heatsink and fan. Since the change as soon as I try and play any video games the PC crashes after 5 minutes. The cooling fan is working.I run Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit, ATI 4670 2.2 GB Graphics, 3GB DDR 2 RAM, Real Tek integrated Audio.

Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
The first thing I would think of is overheating from your description. So check your CPU cooler. Make sure that you put the right amount of thermal paste under the heatsink when you installed it.
Can you also post what PSU you are running?
What temperatures are you getting?
Can you also be more specific about the crashes?

Also what bios are you using did you update it to one that supports it?

Hi there,

could you post the revision number for your Motherboard as there are 6 versions of this particular board.
Also could you state if you are using the 125W C2 version of the CPU or the 95W C3 version as on all revisions for your Mobo the C2 stepping version of the CPU isn't supported.

Thanks for all your replies I'm not very technically minded but here goes.......
My power supply is an EZ cool 500w ATX-500-JSP and my BIOS is Award Modular V6.00 PG my processor tems range from 35c to 50c when managing to play a game.  I'm still looking for the rev number of the motherboard and the CPU information. The latest crash said display driver AMD has stopped working although my computer did not reboot.  Other crashes involve a blue screen and state that windows has restarted my computer to prevent further damage.

Also my REV is 2.0!

I think a good place to start would be by clearing your CMOS and loading the BIOS Optimised default settings. If you are unsure then it is all covered here: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2286.0.html

As I stated earlier, if your CPU is the 125 Watt version it isn't supported on the board. You really do need to double check which version your CPU is before doing much else.

I think it would be a good idea if you answered absic's question before moving on ;) There is really no point looking for other reasons for the problem if it is down to an unsupported processor.

Why didn't you just say so earlier, it's no problem ;) Where did you purchase it from? If you have a receipt it should give details on there. If you bought it online post the link up and we will check it out for you. We are here to help you not give you a hard time. You could try pressing the Windows key and Pause key together to bring up System properties which might tell you only if it is unsupported it might report it wrongly.

Your processor is not supported by the motherboard. Here's the cpu supported list for your mobo.
http://gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3062. Better ask at gigabyte support if there will be a bios with support for the cpu.

Oh dear, as Boink states, according to the Support list neither version of the CPU is supported on the revision 2.0 board. However, I think this could be wrong as all the other versions do at least show support for the 945 CPU but only in it's 95W design.

The fact that the PC seems to work but then throws up random crashes and BSOD's is also a pretty good indicator that the CPU is not compatible. You  really need to dig out your receipt and check exactly which CPU you have. Even if it does turn out to be the 95W version it still might not work with your Mobo revision and again, as Boink has stated, you will need to ask Gigabyte Tech Support for further help.
