Title: Norton Internet Security included on disc?
Post by: cephraim on September 11, 2010, 10:57:17 pm
I see that it is included on the disc that came with my GA-870A-UD3 mobo.
Is it a full version?  How long are the updates good for?
Any limitations?
I see that it is the 2010 version.  Can it be upgraded to 2011 for free?

Thanks!
Eph

When you buy norton it comes with 1 year of updates so i am sure the  one on the disk is the same. If you want to upgrade to 2011 then i am afraid you will have to pay for it. So with disk you get full version for 1 year of updates after that it is a pay as you go.

updates =  updates to the program you have

upgrade = changes the version you have to another one.

If all else fails contact norton tech and ask them as they own the program.

Personally I wouldn't touch Norton with a bargepole! It slows the computer down, give problems with other programs and then is a devil to get rid of when you have had enough of it. Also I am not sure but I expect it is a three month trial or similar that is included free, this is normally the case and then you get nag screens trying to get you to purchase the full version.

I would suggest that you PM runn3R the forum moderator who is a Gigabyte employee.

I agree with DM why would you use norton as it hasnt has a good rep since 2004.  Avg is alot better and u can use the free version until you decide if you like it.

Yes  I agree but would argue about the date  ;) I have been answering forum queries since back in the 90s and Norton was a problem even then! Personally I use Kaspersky and have no complaints.

Hi cephraim

It is 90 days subscription of fully functional Norton Internet Security (NIS).
Normally if you buy NIS (separately) at shop or online you get 1 year of subscription included.
As far as I know after this period the software still works but you need to extend your subscription to have viruses database / software engine updated.

For details of extending subscription / buying upgrade to newer version please contact Symantec.

Stay clear of Norton!!

More trouble than its worth.  I have used AVG in the past but now I use Microsoft Security essentials.

I havent had any problems with it.

Thanks.  FWIW, I love NIS and have had no problems with it.  PC Mag gave the 2010 suite "best in class", including system resource consumption.  To each his own.

Thanks.  FWIW, I love NIS and have had no problems with it.  PC Mag gave the 2010 suite "best in class", including system resource consumption.  To each his own.

Several sources have stated that Norton went through a significant change [program rewritten  in 2009] in the last 2 years.  I tried it many times in the distant past [1990's-2003ish] and it was nothing but ONE BIG HEADACHE!  What I found most frustrating and distressing was that once you installed it, you could not even get a clean uninstall on it, which I found to be terribly distressing.  They did finally come out with a separate program so you could uninstall it and even that would not work at times.

Norton had a reputation of being good originally [in fact, they were pioneers in the antivirus industry], then made the mistake of trying to ride on their reputation rather than upon staying sharp and on the cutting edge.

In the last 2 years they have come a long, long way [system resources are no longer such a terrible hog, software bloat not so big anymore, uninstall is easier, etc.] but they have lost my vote and confidence a long long time ago.

You could not PAY me to install it on any of my systems, EVER!

For most professionals, Kaspersky, BitDefender, Eset NOD 32, and Webroot are the top 4 now in the industry.

To be 100% honest with you, I have had problems with both Bit Defender and Kaspersky as well as AVG [so sorry DM], and have finally gone to Microsoft's newly released Security Essentials.  I have never had a problem with Microsoft SE, but I have also only been using it for a few months now.

Microsoft's SE [Security Essentials] is safe, effective, thorough, and best of all, FREE!  Software bloat is nonexistent, it does not hog your resources, and uninstall is quite simple and easy.  I have installed it on many computers in the last few months and no problems whatsoever.  It is totally user friendly too.

Hope this helps!

Hi Soar
You are forgiven for your (wrong) views on Kaspersky of course and I won't hold it against you, much! But I agree with your decision not to use Norton at any cost.

interesting. do you have any results/data of its efficiency in comparison with other anti-virus software? i mean how many viruses it can detect and erase.

I too have heard a lot of good reports about Microsoft's SE [Security Essentials] but not substansiated by any figures. It would be handy if all these stories are true.

BeeKeeper,

I found the best and most unbias data, results and reviews come from the following third-party industry testers and reviewers:

Virus Bulletin VB 100% Certification
ICSA Labs, Consumer Reports
West Coast Labs
AV-Comparatives

Hope this helps!

Hi Soar

DM,

I am happy that Kaspersky works well for you.  Here has been my latest experience with Kaspersky:

I loaded the program and it worked ok for about 3-4 months, but I kept noticing my system becoming slower and slower.  Finally the system slowed to a crawl [as in Firefox requiring 1-2 minutes to open].

I ran various other Malware programs in my attempt to locate the problem.  I also ran System Mechanic Pro several times.  Took off all Programs not absolutely needed and still the dreaded crawl.  Kaspersky Tech Support could not help me solve this issue.

As a last resort [before reformatting] I finally decided to remove Kaspersky and load Microsoft Essentials.  That's when I made the disturbing discovery that Kaspersky was the "slow down to a crawl" culprit all along!

After removing Kaspersky and switching to Microsoft Essentials my system sped up to the speeds I had when my system was brand new and newly formatted.  Interesting enough, Microsoft Essential did not find anything wrong within my system.  That is when I realized Kaspersky was the slow down culprit.

I realize many, many people love Kaspersky and have had good experiences with it.  Not me.  My first install and use of Kaspersky one year ago opened the door for my system to have trojan horses and viruses.  Even though I receive free and legal copies of both Kaspersky Antivirus and Internet Security, I would not dare use it again.  I had problems with it on several different computers...not just my own personal computers.

Simply put, for me, Never Again!

Hi Soar
Sorry to hear about your run in with Kaspersky. I have been using it for years ever since I lived in the Eastern block where it is almost mandatory being Russian ;) To be fair though it has always worked very well and even picked up malware that other programs have missed, so yes I will stick with it for now until something better comes along.
By the way did I mention that all free software is gratefully received(especially Kaspersky) ;D

Good and mandatory are two different concepts unless you live in a communist country! ;D

DM,

Wow!  I am sorry you had to grow up in a communist country!  Yes, I understand the difference between mandatory and good.  It sounds as if it was rough growing up....I worked in several East Bloc nations in the 80's....Where do you grow up?

That was him being nice, soar. No I didn't grow up over there I was brought up in the UK but went to live in Bulgaria for several years and an enlightening expereince it was too. Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Do you know what shocked me the most was that the majority of people would have gone back to commuinism or at least remembered it favourably. There was little to no crime over there and you could walk around at night without being worried. There were a lot of good points including the weather!!!

Yes, I remember when you went to Bulgaria DM.

Here in the UK we had street parties, crime fell and it was a much happier place. ;D

Then you returned :o ........... Nuff said!  :'( :'( :'(
