Title: [GA-P55A-UD5] [rev 1.0] freezing, crashes, reboot while gaming
Post by: wazabe on September 27, 2010, 01:54:39 am
hello,
i just build this new system, everything was running fine until i start playing games.
first game that causes problems was cod4, i had almost instant freezing and was impossible to play more than 30seconds online.
i checked event logs and saw problems with realtek lan drivers.
so i install latest ones from gigabyte website.

its running better now, well at least last time i played it.
i could play for like 30min, then it froze and rebooted.

then starcraft 2,
i get flickering menu, then in the lobby, right when the counter start, it freeze, black screen, then sometimes flashes untill map load.
at this point, it reboot and sometimes the game just continue to load the map and i can play.
but then i can get various lags, freezing, i even got a message ingame where it told me something about out of memory pool or something.

so here are my specs (everything is new, just build the system 2 days ago):
MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD5 rev 1.0
MOBO BIOS: F5

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I would recommend that you try playing the game off line and see if the problem still surfaces. It sounds more like a memory error or something.
Also just check that the temperatures are OK.and the fans are running on the heatsink.

thanx dark mantis,

i played offline and same thing, the game freeze to death after like 2minutes.
this is what i did so far:
updating chipset drivers
ccleaned register
different nvidia drivers
updating realtek drivers -> enabled 'stereo mix' (i read somewhere it could help)

nothing fixed the problem

what can i do now ?
the ram is exactly the one stated in the gigabyte list for the mobo
could it be the problem ?
or the graphic card ?
im lost

It could be that the game itself is the problem with your setup. It may need patching. Check on the website and see if anyone else is finding the same trouble.
The other thing to look at is the temperatures. It could be an overheating problem.

Run this on maximun
IntelBurnTest
http://www.ultimate-filez.com/files/IntelBurnTest.zip
Then run this in stability with your screen size set for a bit.
FurMark v1.8.2
http://ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

You do have Virtual memory set on the HDD and not on the SDD and not have just turned it all off?

its not overheating, i used msi afterburner to check and ingame gpu temp goes up to 72° max.
the cpu stay at stable 30°, the noctua is a beast

i also ran a furmark stability test for like 2min, seems ok to me, but i will try again.

and aslo memory test got no errors

here is my Virtual memory settings:

It all looks alright there. I think you need to run Furmark for a bit longer than you did but I am not expecting any great problem. Have you checked the game's website like I suggested?

You really should change that or you will burn through your SSD have it set on your HDD.

what should i change exactly ?

could the problem comes from the pci-e ssd interfering with the gpu ?

i noticed this error in cod4:

He's just suggesting that you move your swapfile from your C drive (SSD) to your D drive (magnetic drive)

As a matter of interest what sort of SSD are you running?

Ah! I did wonder from your post. It should work fine the only thing is it will be sharing bandwdth with your graphics card and anything else you have on the PCIE bus.

Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” and set C: to “No paging file” and set your E: to “system managed size” click OK and reboot.

and run furmark a bit longer

The newest realtek NIC drivers from realtek site might be better.

ok i did the virtual memory thing,
ran furmark stability test for 7.30min, no errors, nothing.
temps goes up to 85° but seems normal.

also installed those realtek NIC drivers, still crash in both games

You mean 7 min 30 sec yes? 30-60 min would test it a bit more fully.

Your HDD  in a blue SATA port?

Is your OCZ Revo in the bottom x16 slot ? If not try it in that one.

Are you running at stock speeds including running your RAM at 1333MHz just for testing.

Better RAM testing just to be sure its not the RAM.

Any other games you can test? Even try Beta drivers

hmm

they just released a patch for starcraft 2, and guess what

i didnt get any problems so far, now it may be just a coincidence.
but i played for 2 hours without any flickering or anything

i tried cod4 again and after 10min, it froze

so i tried other games like BLUR, and an nvidia demo game,
no problems at all

i guess its just a cod4 problem, so i will just search the net if anyone got a fix, but all i found didnt do it
will report back and hopefully i wont get the problems back in SC2.

the HD is a sata3, so its plugged in a white sata3 slot
yes the revodrive is in bottom slot, everything is stock i didnt touched any settings

thanx for your help guyz, really appreciate this

well the game is auto patched when u launch it, so i could get any patches before this afternoon :)
and cod4 still got the problem and wont be patched, it got to be drivers problem

anyway glad its not (hopefully) hardware related

and thanx again for all your help :)

and btw i talked too soon,
i got freeze back in starcraft and cod4 is still messing like crazy

guess im cursed, but i run out of ideas of what to check, test

now its really getting too annoying

should i flash to latest bios ?
i tried everything except this.

in this case, is there a link with a well explained step by step how to flash new bios somewhere ?
i fried an old asus mobo trying to do this years ago, so this is scaring me a lil.

Firstly the Firmware is like the card's BIOS not the drivers so it might help to make sure that you have the latest one.
Secondly I am sure it would help to have the latest BIOS in other areas as well. We have details of how to do it in our FAQ section.

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html

Make sure that you remove any overclock first and then just follow the instructions. Only use QFlash not @BIOS as it is more reliable that trying through the OS. Clear the DMI whilst you are there. Then clear the CMOS and load optimised defaults for the new BIOS. When you have flashed it post back.

We are here if you need us.

ha , yes i should have thought about this earlier too,

on the pdf of the gigabyte website, they say one shouldnt flash from F5 to F12, but instead from F5 to F8, then F8 to F10, F10 to F12....
is this correct ?
or i can go directly from F5 to F12 ?

Hi there,

It is always better to flash BIOS in smaller steps as it is safer and leads to less problems with the updating process.

Absic is right as usual and it is safer to do it in a couple of steps. I would just say two would be enough but it is your choice.

i did F5 to F6 to F8 to F10 to F12
but still got the same problems

now i checked the onboard leds,
and when im booting, i see the MD and GD leds green for the 2 on top and yellow for the 2 above, thats for cpu and memory i think.
when i check with cpu-z and cpuid i get these results:
now note the Core voltage aand Core speed,
at star they way higher than this, in fact i got like 1.2v or something and 3280MHz core speed
then after a few seconds/minutes it goes down to these 0.9v and 1230 MHz, is this normal for an i7 870 ?

here is the CPUID results:

I think you will just find that it is the EIST(speedstep) kicking in and dropping the speed down. If you apply a load to the processor I am sure it would pick up again. On my 1366 board all the leds come on(it's like a christmas tree) when I boot but then go out as it progresses.

What PCIE slot do you ahve the card installed in?
Do you have any other cards in the slots?

The BIOS version is listed as I thought so now you can go on  the manufacturers website and see if there is an updated version.

the gpu is in slot 1
the revodrive is in slot 3

Post by: Dark Mantis on September 29, 2010, 10:13:09 pm
I am sure that your problem lies in the fact that because you have the Revodrive(or any other card for that matter) in  PCIE Slot 3 it is restricting the performance of PCIE Slot 1 from x16 to x8. I hope that is clear.

Post by: wazabe on September 29, 2010, 10:49:57 pm
in the manual its not supposed to be the case
they say: 2nd slot share bandwidth with slot 1, so if u used slot 2, the slot 1 will be at 16
but i have nothing in slot 2
the revodrive is in slot 3
hope its clear enough  :(

so yep, something is wrong with :
- GPU-Z
or
- the mobo (puting my slot 1 in 8 instead of 16
or
- the card messing with the bandwidth
or
- the revodrive messing with the mobo and/or bandwidth of the gpu
?

If you check your manual on page 54 it explains in detail why the speed is only x8.

http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-p55a-ud5_e.pdf

Quote
Turbo SATA3 / USB3.0 (Marvell 9128 /NEC USB 3.0 Controller)
Determines whether to set the PCIe speed of the Marvell 9128 or NEC USB 3.0 controller to PCIe Gen 2. Please note that when only one graphics card is installed on the PCIEX16_1 slot, it will operate at up to x8 mode if either one of the two controllers is set to PCIe Gen 2.

So to enable x16 you must disable the USVB3 and SATA3 controllers. Simples! ;)

tadaaaaaaa
it works :)

so this was the problem, thanx a lot mantis !

but now i bought this mobo because of the sata3 and usb3 possibilities, that i supposed are now off ?
are there any mobos out there that dont have this kind of problems ?

Oh! The joys of being an early adopter. I am afraid I can't really answer your question regarding the use of USB3 and SATA3. I am in the same boat myself so to speak.

Its likely drivers for the GTX 470 that are the problem, did you try any beta drivers that might of fixed it? Even the odd setting set to high can cause problems.

SATA 3 for you WD HDD is simply not needed it can not break SATA 2 speeds only a hand full of SSD's can break them speeds.
I am sure that your problem lies in the fact that because you have the Revodrive(or any other card for that matter) in  PCIE Slot 3 it is restricting the performance of PCIE Slot 1 from x16 to x8. I hope that is clear.
Thats not ture the PCIE Slot 3 (listed as PCIEX4_1) runs off the P55 chip at (PCI-e 1.x) x4 if PCIEX1_1 and PCIEX1_2 slots and the eSATA connectors are not used. The PCIE Slot PCIEX16_1 & PCIEX8_1 are what share the bandwidth plus the USB 3 and SATA 3 if set.
