Title: GA EP41 UD3l and ram?
Post by: deadbeat on November 02, 2010, 06:02:04 pm
I have recently upgraded my p31 motherbaord as it would only accept 4g ram max and I require 8 gig.

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

I am aware of the single sided ram issue if populating all 4 slots, so my question is this...

If I only populate 2 dimms with 2x4g ram would this work?

specifically http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0043BF3AE/ref=oss_product

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

The first thing we would need to know is what revision your motherboard is.

I really wouldn't like to say whether that memory would work but I think in theory there is no problem. Most of the ones mentioned on the Gigabyte QVL is Samsumg or OCZ. You can see here.

The other option is to check on the memory manufaturers website for their QVL to match the board.

Yes, I'm hoping it will work. My worries started when I ran the crucial memory advisor that said each slot would only accept 2g max...mind you, it also incorrectly read my board as rev 1.0

As I said if you want to play safe then make sure you use some memory that is on the compatible list. ;)

ok, tried the ram and it didn't work, so it appears that only the qvl ram can be guaranteed on this board.

So...I took the plunge adn bought an i7 950, Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Intel X58 and 6 gig of Corsair XMS3 and an Asus GeForce GTX 460 Direct CU TOP 768MB which should arrive tomorrow.

When I upgraded this current motherboard the other day Win 7 Ultimate booted, scanned for new drivers and hey presto! Was wondering if this new board is likely to be as hassle free upon booting?

It is a good board and unless you have some incompatibility with some other hardware you should be fine. ;)
You will find however that you are going to need a much bigger PSU to run this new setup. If you havent already bought one I would recommend a good quality one of at least 650W with a single 12V rail.

Fortunately, I'd gone overboard on my last build and fitted an Antec 850..the one with the yellow stripes, so I think it's a Truepower Quattro.

Hopefully this should do fine along with the NZXT case

OK sounds good. Let us know how you get on with the build. ;)
