Title: ON board graphics
Post by: Bluemani on December 19, 2010, 02:45:45 pm
Hi there, i am using a Gigabyte motherboard GA-K8N51GMF-9 and i have been trying to install my new graphics card, Radeon HD5450 but its not working, i cant find where in the bios to disable the on board graphics, the bios version is F3b, its an old version, the thing is, it boots, but it just stays on the starting windows screen, but i can hear it going to the login screen, alot of people have said i need to disable the onboard graphics or video, but i cant seem to do it, can you help,?

Many thanks

Well I really think you should update the BIOS to F8 the latest version anyway regardless of whether it has anything to do with the problem or not. Make sure that you use QFlash to do it and you can download it from here:

http://uk.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=1939&dl=1#bios

You will probably need to remove your GPU to do this.
After the update you can go into the BIOS and load Optimised BIOS Defaults and also change your graphics form onboard to PCIE or PEG.
After that and you have saved and exited you can shut down again  and fit your GPU and then reboot.

Do exactly the opposite of when you installed it. GPU = graphics card ;)

You can do it. Just post back afterwards to let us know how things went.

one question before i do this, on the download page, there is
GA-K8N51GMF-9-RH and GA-K8N51GMF-9 what is the difference?

They are different versions of this board. If yours only says GA-K8N51GMF-9 then use just the BIOS updates from that board.

slight problem, when i am in Q flash it says update from the floppy, but i dont want to update from that, i want to update from a flash drive, what do i do?

You need to use the smallest USB drive you have and put the BIOS update file on there.

In the BIOS you need to make sure that USB Legacy Storage or something similar is enabled and USB Legacy Devices also.

Change the boot sequence to find the USB HDD first and disable the floppy drive altogether.

Make sure that you insert the USB pen drive into one of the main USB ports on the motherboard before booting up.

When in QFlash make sure you set it to Disable the Keep DMI Data on the home page.

You will probably find that the drive will appear as a hard disk drive when in QFlash.

Have you actually disabled the floppy drive in the BIOS? It shows in Standard CMOS Features and will say Floppy Drive or          A Drive or similar.

yeah i disabled the floppy drive,. like u said, but still says update from floppy drive and when i do it freezes, still no usb or anything, its probably because its such an old bios, i am going to see if i can get a floppy, nothing is easy is it

Yes might be easier in the long run. Don't forget to enable the floppy drive in the BIOS again though.

When you downloaded the file and saved it did you unzip it afterwards to give you the three files?

Post by: Bluemani on December 19, 2010, 10:32:44 pm
i only saw one file, why would there be 3 files?

Right that might explain a lot. The file you downloaded is what is called a zip file. The file is compressed to make it smaller to transfer over the internet. If you right click on it and then select open a dialogue box will appear and you can select where to unzip the file. I would suggest your floppy drive or USB pen drive whatever you want to use.

I have just had a thought here. What size is the update package as a lot of them are 2 MB nowadays and so won't fit on a floppy disk.

the total size is 537kb so i dont think thats the problem, its weird it starts to do it, then drops out? i read some machines have flash protection, but i dont think mine has because i cant see it anywhere

Your floppy drive is working alright I suppose and the disk is not write protected?

as far as i know its working properly and not write protected, otherwise i wouldn't of been able to put stuff on it. say if i take out the whole drive, do you think it will detect a usb then? also, would it matter what location i downloaded from? i have been using the Europe one

By all means use the USB drive instaed and see if you cna get further  with that. Just remember to disable the floppy drive and change the boot sequence etc in the BIOS before attempting it again.

You might be better off first having a look at our FAQ on how to do the bIOS update so you are more familiar with the procedure.

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,2441.0.html

There is one written by me there and also one written by absic and some people prefer one over the other so please read them both.

Maybe. Have you formatted the USB drive with FAT32 because it wont accept it if it is done with NTFS?

I am rapidly running out of ideas here. Just in case it is a BIOS corruption problem we will try and force the Backup BIOS to take over.

You can kick in the backup BIOS by shutting down the PSU from the wall, then hold down your case power button in and then turn on the power supply button, a few seconds later the board will start, shut off the power supply then.

Then you can turn on the power supply again and power up the board normally and DualBIOS will kick in.

is mine a dual bios?

No you are quite right I forgot which board it was and on looking I wouldn't say it is. You seem to only have one 4M BIOS chip.

In that case I cannot think of any other course of action but to contact GGTS and see what they say. But to be honest I can't see you getting anywhere with them.

Just enter your email address and click on the language of choice.

Sorry I can't hlep further.

No problem, I'm sorry I wasn't around to help today, been a bit busy. Anyway you have done it all yourself without my help I see, well done. So we were right it was just faulty hardware that was the problem. ;)
