Title: Let the fun begin! I just received my new GA-P67A-UD3-B3!
Post by: soarwitheagles on March 19, 2011, 09:08:13 pm
Hi everyone!

After waiting a few weeks, I was so happy to see my new GA P67A-UD3 B-3 arrive in the mail today!  Here's some pics of the box and MOBO.  And yes, it is true, they are using the same PCB with a sticker over the old numbers!  Not to worry, the important thing is we no longer need to worry about using those SATA 2 ports anymore!

Also, at first glance, it appears as if this model has the EFI hybrid technology, the Dual BIOS, and the 3TB+ stuff all loaded [look at the bottom left hand corner of the box]!

Will start this new build on Monday!

Up, up, and away into the new heights of Sandy Bridge!

Congratulations Soar! The only thing to watch is the placement of the CPU into the socket as the pins are extremely fine and could be damaged very easily. The rest of the build shouldn't give you any problems in my experience. ;)

Thanks DM!  I will be extremely careful on this build because it is very important to me after waiting so long.

Notice, I am using the anti-static wrist band as you suggested AND an anti-static computer mat!  I no longer take foolish chances especially after discovering some static electricity from walking on carpet can reach 25,000 volts!

Here's an excerpt from the article, "The Shocking Truth Behind Static Electricity":

When you stride across a wool carpet in leather shoes, your shoes pick up extra electrons from the carpet with each step.

By the time you lift your foot up off the ground, the electrons will have spread around your entire body, giving you a negative charge. The next time you put your foot on the carpet, your shoe doesn't have any extra electrons, but your head might. So more electrons make the leap to your foot.

"As you keep walking across the floor, you become full of electrons," said Todd Hubing, from the Electromagnetic Compatibility Laboratory at the University of Missouri-Rolla. "Eventually more electrons don't want to come up on you because you're so charged up. You end up with a high voltage, about 20,000 to 25,000 volts."

That's serious power at your fingertips, considering a normal electrical outlet on the wall is only around 100 volts of electricity.

You can find this article here:

http://www.livescience.com/4077-shocking-truth-static-electricity.html

I no longer work on any computer without the anti-static wristband and anti-static computer mat...there are areas in California where I have experienced nearly a full inch arc [looks exactly like a miniature lightening bolt] from the static electricity when I touched the door knob...and to be honest with you, it was so strong that it not only startled me, but hurt too!

Here is a shockingly funny video that shows the power of static electricity[the first two shocks are the real thing, the last recorded shock is obviously fake, but also very funny]:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrWzc3L5ALI&feature=related

Thanks again everyone and have an awesome day!

Oh, you can see the sticker pasted over the old PCB lettering in this pic!

Have a good one!

Really glad to hear it. It's VERY reasonable, especially having in mind that assembling PC without proper devices protecting from ESD (electrostatic discharges) may increase it's failure rate at least a few times. I have seen some statistics showing 18x higher failure rate when nobody cared about ESD.

So good luck with your B3 soarwitheagles!

Yes I too would certainly agree there. We were always taught to respect static electricity and the potential damage that it can cause. Even though the gates on ICs are protected they can't withstand the sort of voltages that can be produced by a heavy static discharge. :o

runn3R, thanks for the encouragement.  The anti-static wrist band only cost a couple of dollars, and the anti-static mat was $12.  Very small price to pay for guaranteed protection of $100+ motherboards!  I'll never work on a MOBO without them now.

Have a good one!

For sure DM!  I never realized a good static shock could be somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000 volts!  That's enough to kill a MOBO instantly!  For me, it is not worth the risk to work without the anti-static equipment now.

PS Hey, did you watch that video I posted?  I know you'll get a good laugh out of it!

Hi Soar

Yes I did watch the video. Stupid but funny. Actually it takes me back to when we were learning the basics of electronics and we used to get a good sized capacitor and charge it up then go and zap some poor unsupecting fool with it. By the way DONT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS!

Yes, DONT TRY THIS AT HOME KIDS!!!

LOL, I too have not so fond memories of the charged capacitor scream trick...many years ago one of my so called friends who owned a motorcycle shop tossed me a fully loaded/charged capacitor and everyone got to watch poor soar scream and jump very high all at the same time!  Not a good idea at all!~

If it wasn't illegal, I would love to try out my new Taser on him!  It would definitely make his hair much straighter...hehehehehe

Anyway, most of this stuff is not funny simply because the person being shocked may have an unknown heart condition and it could kill him/her...

Have a good one DM!  Back to this new build now!

Soar

PS-DM, now I must rip into that really nice Intel i5-750/Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 v.1 rig you helped me build, which by the way is working flawlessly now for many months! I would like to use the CoolerMaster Storm Sniper case for this new 2500k build.   I can only hope [and pray] this new Sandy Bridge build will go well....

Have you any other hints other than being careful with the pins?

EX58,

That's strange because the box says rev. 1.0

I'll look on the board later today.

Soar

EDIT: Looked on the MOBO and it is definitely version 1.0  Wow, now I am not sure what to think about this...I looked at Gigabyte's website and sure enough, it is saying only Rev. 1.1!  Anyone have any insights as to what is going on?  Did I receive the only Rev. 1.0 in the entire universe?  My, my, I must be very, very special!

Thanks again DM!

One more question: does this GA-P67A-UD3-B3 MOBO have the Marvel controller on it?  And if yes, am I to use the Intel controller instead [I remember you mentioning somewhere to use the Intel driver rather than the Marvel driver]?

Also, at another forum, I have been advised to use the Crucial RealSSD C300 rather than the OCZ Agility 2 OCZSSD2.  Do you concur with this advice?

Hi Soar,

The Crucial C300 is the best SSD on the market at the moment although it is due to be superceded by the Crucial M4 (C400) any time now.

The UD3-B3 doesn't have the Marvell controller as some of the higher end boards do so it wouldn't apply to you anyway. The Intel controlled ports are the SATA3 6 GBs and should be used for your SSD etc.

Yes to be honest I think it is just a mix up. The motherboards are the same boards (PCBs) that were issued as the original motherboards therefore they will still say Rev1.0 Until Gigabyte runs out of these PCBs and has new ones fabricated they will then show as Rev1.1

Soar I along with others mentioned in an older thread about using the intel drivers and believe me you won't regret it. I was getting disappointing speeds of 110 MB/s with my c300 SSD before installing the Intel drivers. It jumped to 330 MB/s (all read speeds) after installing the Intel ones.

And good luck with your board build.

faizoff, I totally believe you guys!  But where can I find these Intel drivers?  Is it automatically included at Gigabyte's website under the downloads for GA-P67A-UD3-B3?  Is it on their included CD disc?

Please let me know exactly where I can find the correct driver to use.

Also, may I ask which number firmware you are using on your c300?  Are you using firmware 002 or 006?  There seem to be mixed reports on which firmware to use.  Have you any suggestions?

Thanks much!

on the Crucial forums of a person with similar circumstances as me with regards to the C300 rating. They changed the drivers that were the default installation by Win 7 from msahci to intel RST ones.

The link is in the last post of that thread to the Intel drivers. It's made a big differnce as far as I can tell, things seem to be a lot smoother and boot time is now under 25 secs. The Windows rating is 7.8 and I couldnt be happier.

Oh and I've overclocked the CPU to 4.4 Ghz at the moment and this thing is blazing fast even with the stock cooler.

Hi Soar,

All that is being suggested is that you use the AHCI drivers from the IRST pack as they seem to be more efficient than the Microsoft drivers. Don't worry about revision numbers.

At what time during the build process should I install the IRST pack?  It sounds as if I must do it after installing Windows 7...is this true?

Ok, I put the core basics together, hit the power button, and waaaalaaa...got my first post.  As people here suggested, I immediately loaded optimized defaults and then saved.

Since I will use the Crucial RealSSD C300, I think I am suppose to switch something to AHCI.  When I looked at the Integrated Periperals in BIOS, my guess would be I need to change the PCH SATA Control Mode from IDE to AHCI...

Can someone here help me know if this is the correct settings before I begin to install the OS?

Also, are there any other areas of the BIOS I should change before loading OS/drivers...

Please check my BIOS screen and let me know if you see something wrong.

And by the way, I forgot which do I load first, the OS or the drivers?

Ok, it's me,

Thanks again DM!  Ok, hope I don't bore you with another question...

I am considering rotating the Hyper 212+ 90 degrees so it can blow the hot air out the top of my case [so I would like to point the exhaust upward, toward the 200mm exhaust fan on my Storm Sniper case].

I positioned the Hyper212+ accordingly, but I noticed the heatpipes are very, very close to some capacitors on one side, and the RAM on the other side...

Do you think the distance is too close to mount the Hyper 212+ this way?

May I have some opinions here?  Do those heat pipes get real hot and could they affect the RAM or those capacitors?

When I orient the Hyper 212+ the normal way [blowin' toward the back of the computer case], then the heat pipes are no where near the RAM or capacitors.

No problem at all soar, that's what I am here for, ask away.

The cooler will be fine that way round. The heatpipes don't glow red hot or anything just track the heat away form the CPU up to the cooling fins. Go ahead and it will help cool the case as well in that orientation.

Thanks again DM!  Ok, I had to take a little detour today...I took that brand new HAF 932 out of the box and it was irresistible!  I just could not find the strength to say no!  Besides, it will make things so much easier if I leave the Intel i5-750 in the Sniper case and sell it as is on Craigslist.  It will more than pay for this new build.  Having decided to put this new build into the HAF 932, I noticed the inside of the HAF 932 was a ghastly grey color.  So, I just finished spray painting it pink, and it looks really nice!  LOL!  Just joking...I would not dare paint it pink while living in California..but I did spray paint it black and now I am waiting for it to dry...had to spray in cold weather [50F]  and instructions say never below 65F.  Hope it sticks!  Presently baking the case in front of a catalytic heater at around 300 degrees.  I wish I had painted the HAF 932 in warmer weather...it works so much better!

Will post a pic later.

Up, up, and away!

Also to add, I'm getting my Hyper 212+ cooler tomorrow. And I've been thinking of adding 2 Radeon 6870 Video cards for crossfiring overload.

Still mulling about it.

I must check out this case you're raving about soar. I need to get a case as well as I've been recycling my old one.

Hi Faizoff!  It sounds as if you will be upgrading even more! Two of the 2 Radeon 6870 Video cards would make your rig really fly!

There are lots of really nice cases out there, but the HAF 932 has incredible reviews across the board.  To be honest with you, I was trying my best to be content with CoolerMaster's Storm Sniper, but last night I realized it would be so much easier to simply leave all the older components [Intel i5-750/GA P55A-UD3] in the Storm Sniper.  I will sell it as a unit and not have to rip into it nor transfer all the components to another case.  Tomorrow I hope to slap the new components [2500k, etc.] into the new HAF 932.

Faizoff, the nice version of the HAF 932 [there are 5 different versions I believe] is actually quite expensive for a person on a tight budget like me [New Egg is showing it at $179.99].  I was very fortunate to pick one up for around $25 during the Black Friday deals here in the USA [it was offered for $79 with a free FRIO CPU cooler included.  I kept the HAF 932 and sold the FRIO on Ebay].  Now I wish I had purchased several of these combo's instead of only one.

Initally, I did not want to use the HAF 932 for two reasons:

1. No dust filters
2. Sickly gray color inside

Problems solved:

1. I'll make my own filters
2. I painted the interior myself

The pro's far outweigh the con's:

1. Huge: room for anything
2. Incredible airflow and cooling: three 240mm fans, room for two 140mm fans too
3. Super Heavy Duty

If you can find a good deal on a HAF 932 or a HAF X, I would highly recommend it!

I believe you will enjoy that Hyper 212+.  It is simple, yet highly effective!  Now I'll have one in each of my builds.

Keep us up-to-date on any good deals you discover for that new case!

I have posted a pic of my HAF 932 after I ripped it apart and painted it [you cannot paint it with all the parts still inside]!

Now I wish I had taken a before and after pic because there is a huge difference!  I added a stock pic from New Egg that shows the sickly gray interior!

Soar

PS DM, my HAF 932 did NOT come with that rubber thing that goes into the top of the case...is that extra or did they forget to put it in?  Also, they say there are switches for turning the fans on and off, yet I cannot find those either!

Hi Soar,

Yes the rubber mat for the tray should have been included but the switches for the fans were not incorporated until the HAF-X which was after the HAF 932.

THe paint should be fine as long as you made sure it was a dry environment and prepared properly.  I mean we would never get anything painted in the UK if we waited for the temperture to rise beyond 50F   ::)

I will have to search everywhere just to be certain I did not misplace it.  Strange...but I did not see it when unpacking the case.  Yes, I did read about switches for the fans...also strange, I cannot see them anywhere.  My Sniper's both have two switches, one to control the speed of the fans, the other to turn off the LED's.  Not to worry, I will be installing Scythe Kaze Master to control 4 fans and monitor 4 various temperature points .

Had to rip out quite a few things to paint this baby...it went fast and yes, I know about dry conditions but I painted during a massive rain storm simply because I was tired of waiting and we've had massive rain and flooding for several days.  If worse comes to worse, I will sit in the computer case and row down the river!

If only it was summer time!  Here we have temps at times in excess of 110 F.  I could have painted the case and had it dry within 20 minutes, DM!

Slowly but surely making progress.

Thanks again for your help!

Soar

Three questions:

1. Do you think I over did it with the TIM?
2. Have you ever used PSU tester?  I just used it for the very first time to be certain the XFX 850W Silver was in the voltage ballpark!
3. Is that XFX yellow cool or sickening?

Hi Soar,

1. Yes I would say thatyou were a little heavy handed with the paste and if it bothers you you can remove a little with a credit card or something similar, but it would probably be fine as I can still see the direct touch heatpipes through it. You always need to use a little more with that type of cooler because of the grooves to fill.

2. I have used a PSU tester in the past but I don't have one now. (It's alright for you rich Yanks ;D)

3. Not my personal choice but it wouldn't stop me using it if it was the right component.

Hi Jannie!  Long time no see you!  How are you?

Dollar bill?  Not sure what you are referring to..

Quick question...

I recently purchased the Creative PCI Express Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion Series Sound Card.  Have you any suggestions on how to install?  Massive amounts of people are saying huge problem with the drivers and auto update...

After searching for hours tonight, I found a post that recommends these two downloads:

Driver: 2.17.0008

Creative Console Launcher (a separate download from the driver) beta version 2.61.49

May I ask what you are using and how is it working?

Thanks,

Hi Soar,,Still using the Gigabyte GA-890XA-UD3 in the hafx tower,When I decided to go for the hafx, I took the plunge and bought two. So I am just waiting for the new boards and bulldozer to arrive, ( so maybe a long wait ) to do another build.
On the sound side Soar. I returned the X-Fi Titanium HD Soundblaster, as it was involving expensive speakers etc. and I have a nice hi-fi setup in the living room, so it was rathere a waste of money for me.
On a different note, although I am not an expert photographer, it is always something I wanted to get into, so I just bought a Cannon 60d , which developed a fault the first week, so I exchanged it for the top model Canon 7d and having fun learning that.
I will keep watching your build Soar to see how you progress

Jannie,  not all of us are computer building geniuses, like DM!  But it is still fun to build!

Example: my new Crucial RealSSD C300 did not come with a mounting bracket...so I learned to improvise...in the pic below you will see 3 companies helped me to make it work...Crucial for the SSD, OCZ for the mounting bracket, and good ol' Coolermaster for the HD bracket!

DM, my "massive full ATX" new GA-P67A-UD3-B3 MOBO looks sooooooo tiny in this monster HAF 932!

I do not know what I am going to do with all the extra room!

Soar that looks great. I was first debating on what size to get, I think you're picture pretty much seals it that I'll be getting a mid size tower as I too will have tons of room after putting the components in there.

I think I've narrowed it down to these two choices and might jump on them at a good price.

The HAF 922 or the Storm Scout 2000.

Faizoff,

Both of these cases you are looking at are very, very good cases.  Excellent choice either way!

I prefer the 922 over the Scout for 3 reasons:

922 has the 200mm fans vs. the Scout's 140mm's
922 is larger so better airflow and cooling and more room to play around
LED ON/OFF switch

The Scout on the other hand is also a very nice case and I like those handles which come in handy for transportation purposes!

Your GA-P67A-UD3-B3 would look and perform well in either of these Faizoff!

I am a little concerned about my choice of the HAF 932.  I feel like it looks like a wonderful pirate's treasure chest: When you open it, you expect to see lots and lots of diamonds, rubies, gold, silver, etc. but instead the only thing I see is one little diamond: GA-P67A-UD3-B3!

I suppose I must look for more treasures to fill the very large pirate's chest!

The parrot on my shoulder keeps repeating: tiny, so tiny!   Chirp! chirp!

Have a good one and let us know what you choose and please do post some pics!

Soar

PS Faizoff, you may want to consider lapping the Hyper 212+ if you have the time.  I noticed the surface of the heat sink has many, many irregularities [see pic].  Ideally, the copper contact area should be smooth and look like a mirror, but you can see the machinist grooves and roughness through out.  You could probably shave off another 2-4 C degrees after lapping.  It only costs pennies, and it is really easy to do.

Only thing needed is some patience, 400, 800, 1500, and 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper [about .10 each at your local hardware store], dish soap, and about one hour of time. I will definitely lap mine when I find some time!  I do NOT recommend lapping your CPU [it voids the warranty]!

Hope this helps!

Yea Soar I might try lapping the surface before I put it on the CPU this weekend.

I'm also leaning more toward the HAF 922 as it is a bit more roomy than the Scout.

Faizoff,

You can't go wrong with that HAF 922.  I hope you can find a good deal on it!

I think lapping the Hyper 212+ would certainly be worth your while [if you have the time] due to the unusual amount of roughness on the heat sink surface.  I have purchased other CPU heatsink/coolers that were nearly like a mirror directly out of the box.  For some reason, this latest batch of Hyper 212+'s appear rougher than normal.

I did not have time to lap mine simply due to time constraints [I have only a few more days left before I return to work, and then I will have no large blocks of time whatsoever to play with these toys until summer.  So right now, my priority is to at least get this rig up, running, and functional.  I am focusing on completing the bare necessities at the moment.  I wish I had the time to lap it before the assembly, but will save that for later.

Here's the Corsair's I am using on this build.  Fry's had them for $19 per 4 GB so I picked up 8Gb.  I do not see the exact model numbers in the QVL.  I hope they will do the job!  I purchased them because of the low price and the low profile [the Hyper 212+ fan clears the first RAM slot by 1/8 of an inch].  If I had purchased the tall Vengence or G.Skil, I would not be able to populate all 4 slots.

As you can see, I decided to vent the CPU exhaust heat out the back of the case rather than the out the top.  I just didn't feel comfortable about those heatsinks so close to the caps and RAM...

Have you decided which way you will aim your Hyper 212+?

Hey, which state do you reside?  I am on the west coast here.  Grew up in Silicon Valley and now live near the capitol of California.

Florida is a really nice place!  I love the citrus fruit from your state!  Yummy!  Yes, please do upload your before and aft pics so we can see your upgrade and improvement!  The main reason I upload so many pics is because I would like others to be able to learn from my mistakes!  Often a picture makes things so much more clearer than words...esp. in technical things.

Are your PNY's low profile?  And which way will you orient that Hyper 212+?

Yes faizoff I would go for the HAF 922 as I consider it the better case. Yes lapping your heatsink is a good idea.

Soar, if you want to fill your case try a full watercooling loop and you will soon find the space fills up. ;D Mine is starting to get a bit tight and I am thinking of building a custom case more in the Mountain Mods vein but a bit more classy ;)

DM,

Thanks, and yes, I would love to have a nic water cooling loop, but two things are hindering me from it:

1. Cost
2. Fear of a deadly leak

DM, I am glad to have the extra room because hopefully in the future I can muster the money and the courage to build a nice water loop!

Special question: DM, in all the excitement, I forgot to format the SSD before loading the OS.  Is this a problem?

Oh, one more question: where can I download that CPUID?  When I went to their website, somehow I downloaded a program called PC Wizard 2010 when all I really wanted was the CPUID to see my benchmarks....

UPDATE: DM, sorry, I found the CPUID and loaded it.  I missed the prompt earlier when I tried it!

Have a good one!

Thanks DM.  Well, it must have worked correctly because somehow that Intel driver was installed too and now the WEI is showing this SSD as 7.9!

Now I do not put a lot of faith in Windows Experience numbers, but I was surprised it gave it a 7.9

How about some over clocking suggestions?

Back to work on this monster!

Soar, I would give it a chance to "run in" first and make sure there are no little problems that need sorting out before you start clocking it. Only complicates matters if you OC it and then hit a snag, you don't know whether it is the OC that has caused it or just a fault.

I'm not surprised at the 7.9 in WEI. But I do think Microsoft will be re-evaluating it shortly as the faster drives start going mainstream.

DM, you know, that sure makes good sense about waiting on the OC'ing!  Thanks for the good advice and I will wait.  I still have more hardware to add.  Presently, I am very impressed with everything.  I never realized how nice this HAF 932 was until I opened the box and put everything inside.  There are so many variations of what one can do with this case.  Now I am extremely happy I purchased it and am using it.  It is by far the best computer case I have ever owned/used.

The GA-P67A-UD3-B3/Intel 2500K is working flawlessly so far.  Kind of strange, but now I realize that there are probably not as many problems with these boards as most people suspect.  I think I read too many reports detailing the problems, but perhaps for every person that had a problem, there were 50-100 people that had no problem whatsoever!

That is perhaps the one draw back [downside] of reading too much at a forum like this.

I have a proposal:

To help people have a more balanced view, how about Forum Gigabyte UK make a part of this forum where people can post their successes!  Yes, stories about installing the MOBO and there were no problems at all!

I think this idea may be helpful for people like myself that come here and do not realize that most of the Gigabyte MOBO's post with no problem at all and work flawlessly!

Just a suggestion.  I think it would level the playing area by giving people a better perspective of the overall quality of Gigabyte motherboards.

Please forward this to Runn3r.  I think an idea like this could transform many people's perspective on Gigabyte's motherboards in a very positive way.

Up, up, and away into more positive thinking and living!

Hi Soar

I am all in favour of it but I feel that it wouldn't work because there isn't enough incentive for people to come to the forum and post if everything has gone well with their build. Whereas the member with a problem can't wait to post it to get help or even just vent their frustration at someone.

It is the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

DM,

Ok, but I think it is still an idea you should consider.  After reading all the posts about problems, I expected problems while doing this build, yet there were no problems whatsoever.

I am very thankful about that.

Thanks to everyone here for making this work and making it work well!

DM, if you look at the pics in the post above, you can see my temps are doing quite well, too.

From left to right:

1. 2500k Processor - 24.0 C
2. Northbridge [hottest of them all] 32.5 C
3. Southbridge chip - 24.0 C
4. RAM - 22 C

Not bad at all!  I think we should rename the HAF 932 to "The Refrigerator".

I did install/modify some of the fans:

XIGMATEK Cooling System Crystal Series CLF-F1454 140mm White LED Case Fans - two of these, one replaced the CM fan in the back, the other I installed were the 5.25" drives normally go [this creates an airflow that goes directly from front to back as it passes through the CPU Cooler.

I installed a Scythe 120mm fan in the bottom [the XFX 850 Watt PSU would not permit a 140mm fan.

Have a good one!

Yes the tempertures are a nice surprise especially after the original i7s and X58 boards. The HAF is a great case too and with those fans you should be able to keep cool even in your climate.

I am just working on the design of a new case now with watercooling in mind and I will send you details when I have finished them. Lot to sort out first.

DM, know you, it will probably far exceed the dream!

You have an engineer's heart and mind, you lucky duck you!

Some people have it, and some people don't!

Example: my older brother has a tremendous gift.  He can visualize and build a spiral staircase like few others can.  I remember on job where 5 different carpenters attempted to build the spiral staircase, and each had to eventually tear it down and gave up!  What others attempted to do in 1-2 weeks, my brother was able to do in a couple of days.  I could have tried that spiral staircase for several months, and still not have gotten right!  ???

We each have different talents and gifts and engineering is not one of the gifts I have!  :-\

But it is one of your gifts you lucky duck!  Quack, quack!

Now how do I incorporate a spiral staircase into the build..... ;D

LOL!  Ok, I know you can do it.  How about we call it "Spiral Stairway to Sandy Bridge Heaven?"

So I finally installed the Hyper Cooler 212+, I'm not sure what I did wrong, But my temps seems to just a couple of degrees cooler. I didn't do any lapping to the surface.

I'll have to play around and take a look what else I can do.

Faizoff,

Something sounds off.  You should be seeing 10 C degrees drop in temps or more compared to the stock cooler.  I would recommend check to be sure the heat sink is seated correctly.  Be sure you applied the correct amount of thermal paste [remember, the Hyper 212+ is a Heat Pipe Direct Touch CPU Cooler and therefore the amount and the method of applying the thermal paste differs vastly compared to other coolers].

Last, check your fan speed and I would definitely recommend lapping the surface of the heat sink but realize, even without lapping the Hyper 212+, your temps should be significantly lower than the stock heat sink.

Please let us know what you discovered so we can all grow in our understanding of how to properly set up the Hyper 212+.

Thanks,

Soar

Thanks Jannie!

For now, I left the 230 mm non led CoolerMaster fan in the top because it is working well and Coolermaster does not appear to make the 230mm fans anymore...and I could not find any 230 mm fan with LED's anywhere even though I looked many places online.

Dave, where did you upload your pics?  I look forward to seeing your rig.

I know it is nice!

If you are using a good TIM like Arctic Silver 5 then it does take a few days to see the optimum thermal transfer rate but even so I would have expected you to be seeing  a good drop straight away. I would suspect that something is amiss.

I did indeed use artic silver 5. And I suppose it's taking effect now a bit. I overclocked to 4.2 Ghz right now and temps are hovering around 32-35C.

Still no where near the mid 20s when I first got the build and had the same OC.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'll wait and see how this thing goes.

Uh oh, here I walk into an Intel thread ;). Soar, these 230mm fans from CM are kind of a lie. They're really the same as their 200mm fans just with a bigger frame. With that in mind, I think the 200mm led fans fit just fine.

I have a few questions to you.

1. What do you think of that Scythe controler as I've been thinking about it for a while now? Seems like a nice one but it's a bit pricey here.
2. How does that 140mm fan fit in the front? Me, being the fan addict, I'm thinking about fitting one there, too.

BTW,

Thanks for helping me understand about the CM "230mm" fans!  Wow, I never realized they are actually 200mm's just like the Sniper fans.  I am really interested in finding at least one of the "true" and "Genuine' 230 fans so I can compare the difference.  I think they are sold exclusively in England...

I'll keep looking here I suppose and hopefully find one someday!

Who knows, maybe DM would like to trade a genuine 230 mm fan for a free copy of the newest and greatest Kaspersky Pure 3 user license?  DM, are you out here?  Hehehehehehe!

Ok, to answer your questions BTW...

I looked long and hard [three months to be exact] at just about every Fan Controller and Temperature Monitor on the market today...and here is what I discovered:

I really liked and wanted to purchase the AeroCool 2000, but the reviews were so absolutely terrible, I dared not buy it.  I like the advertised abilities, the looks, and the colors...but...

Like your LCD TV, you cannot properly view this controller or any LCD controller mounted in a PC from the top, bottom, left or right side just like a TV, you need to look straight at it for the best view...

So, I did not want to have to bend down to look at the display located on the computer sitting on the floor...

Also, huge problem with temp displays NOT working correctly and fan controllers NOT working correctly...

BTW, I am looking more than anything else for accuracy and reliability, rather than outward appearances....so this scratched the Aerocool off my list immediately because of all the documented cases of poor accuracy and poor reliability.

Next,

Zalman, Sunbeam, 1st PC Corp, and NZXT all had high percentages of poor reviews as well, and most of these units do not show a visual of the temps...so that disqualified these units also [I highly desire the ability to check important temps with just a glance of the eye...it gives me more peace that all is ok with my system].

After careful investigation and much reading, I discovered the Scythe KM02-BK 5.25" Bay Fan Controller had the reliability and accuracy that I was looking for even though I felt it lacked the beautiful aesthetics of the Aerocool models.

So far, I am 100% happy with it.  I have no complaints whatsoever about it.  It is not a LCD display...

This fan controller uses a VFD display (Vacuum Fluorescent Display). Not LCD. Not LED. They used a VFD display because it is viewable at EXTREME angles (if your case sits on the floor, you can read the display while sitting in your chair...if it were an LCD/LED display that would not be possible). Many complaints in reviews of LCD and LED controllers talk about viewing angles. That is totally eliminated with this controller.

Lastly, many, many positive reviews came from builders that used CM's HAF 932...the exact case I was using, so that kind of cinched it for me.

To be 100% honest with you, I feel I had to sacrifice some of the desired beauty for the more important aspects of reliability, functionality, and accuracy.  I had no other choice.

Now about that extra 140mm fan I installed...

New Egg had the XIGMATEK Cooling System Crystal Series CLF-F1451 140mm Blue LED Case Fans on sale for $2.99 instead of the normal $12.99!  They still have the sale going on now.  That was irresistible for me.  They give you a choice of red, blue, green, and white.  I also liked the long-life rifle bearings with only 16 dBa's of noise.

Here is how I mounted them [it was tricky because they are not mountable all the way up front unless you flatten some of the 5.25" tabs [something I was unwilling to do].

I simply drilled a couple of holes in the side of the case and used tiny zip ties to hold it perfectly in place.  4 zip ties, one for each corner and it works perfect.  I cannot hear any noise from any of them.  But best of all, by mounting this fan in the front, it creates an airflow that goes directly straight line from front to back as it passes through the Hyper 212+ CPU cooler.

Last, I like the look of the blue LED of the 140mm fan too!

I must admit, I was deeply disappointed by my Corsair H70 leaking.  I thought I had found the best inexpensive solution to cool my CPU and create much more room/airflow in my case.  When I discovered the leak I promised myself never again!  Hopefully simple yet excellent quality DIY single loop water cooling applications that are in my price range will appear one day.  Until then, I am doing the best I can with what is available.

Hope this helps you By The Way!

Have a wonderful day!

Hi Soar,

As you know I am always around! All joking apart most of the fans here now are the 200 mm variety even from Coolermaster. See below:

http://www.candccentral.co.uk/coolermaster-megaflow-200mm-case-fan-blue-led.html

I will upload a couple of pictures of the original fans for you later though for you to compare visually.

I liked your airflow system and it should work well. Nicely customised fittings.  ;)

I never really took into consideration thew viewing angles for my LCD Fan Controller but after reading your epitomy I had a look and horizontally it isn't a problem at all, something like a 140 degree total is fine. Vertically though is another matter from underneath the LCD disappears almost as soon as you dip below the horizontal, maybe 15 degrees or so but above is not so bad as long as the screen is visible so is the display. As mine is sitting on the desk next to me there isn't an issue as far as that goes but the reflecting light is a different matter!

Thanks for your extensive answer Soar! I don't think I'll be drilling holes in my case but thanks to your photo now I know how much space a 140mm fan takes up.

Regarding CM fans, here's a short topic that explains the issue:

http://forum.coolermaster.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=14329

I kind of agree with their idea to go for a 1000 RPM fan, especially if you have a fan controler:

http://cmstore.coolermaster-usa.com/product_info.php?cPath=36_52&products_id=507

About huge fans, there's one 250mm fan availble here but I have my doubts if it's worth it. Here's a thought - I wish there was a 200mm Gentle Typhoon ;D.

Yes I would like to see one of those too!

The good thing about large fans is they can move a huge quantity of air without having to rotate at great speed and noise. I have my 200 mm front fan running at just 390 rpm and it is totally silent but still gives a good throughput of air.

Yes, a Typhoon 200mm would be nice!

I understand your not wanting to drill holes in your case.  Another option would be simply make a bracket to attach the fan to the 5.25" slots.  It would be easy, but take some time.  I did not have the time so I did it the quick method!

I found many more fans since last posting here....

Here's the power works 250 mm fan.  The reviews are ok, but I am nearly certain it would not work on the front of the HAF 932.  I think it may work on the side and top areas...and I like the extra goodies it comes with!

Here's the features:

250mm DC Cooling Fan (Including bezel) for PC Case
13 Bladed Clear Fan with optimal blade pitch for CFM
    Mesh Metal Fan Grill/Filter
    Black External Trim Ring
    Quiet Operation
    Do It Yourself (DIY)

Here are the specs:

Color:    Clear Fan with Black bezel
Fan Dimension:    250 x 250 x 30 mm
Rated Voltage:    DC 12V
Wattage:    11 Watts
Amperage:    0.9A
Fan Speed:    820RPM ±5%
Airflow:    105.2 CFM ±5%
Noise:    19 dBA
Connector:    4 Pin pass-through power connector

For now, I think I stick with the 230 mm fans...

DM,

You are planning on building your very own case...

May I suggest this monster fan?

The REXFLO 360mm x 30mm Silent Case Fan is as big as they get. This massive fan will quite literally cool the entire side of a case. The fan comes with a matching black bezel that protects it and allows you to mount the fan on the outside of your case's side panel so it won't interfere with any of the components inside. Despite moving a staggering 126.7 CFM, the fan is surprisingly quiet at a mere 21.7 dBA. This is largely due to the fact that the blades only spin at 600 RPM. The fan is powered using a standard 4 Pin pass-through connector, so in theory you could actually daisy chain these fans - though they draw a hefty 6 Watts each, so make sure you've got enough power to do so.

Dimensions:    360 x 360 x 30 mm
Rated Voltage:    12 V DC
Start-Up Voltage:    4.5 V DC
Rated Power:    6 W at 12 V DC
Rated Current:    0.5 A at 12 V DC
Fan Speed:    600 RPM ± 5% at 12 V DC
Airflow:    126.7 CFM ± 5% at 12 V DC
Noise:    21.7 dBA at 12 V DC
Connector:    4 Pin Pass-Through Connector

They forgot to mention this fan also enables the computer case to hover about 3 feet off the ground in mid air, just like a helicopter!

Hi Soar,

They are some huge fans! I think if I put a couple of those on a case I would have to bolt it down to the desktop first or it would soar away on it's own. ;D

Besides when I make my case I am planning watercooling I think.

Whoops,  so sorry DM.  Didn't mean to stray so far off topic!

Back to the main topic:  Having fun with this new GA-P67A-UD3-B3!

So far, I am extremely happy to report that everything is working flawlessly!  No start up issues.  No weird noises.  No BSOD's.  No RAM issues.  Runs at cooler than normal temps.  The rig is just fast as lightening and begging to be overclocked!

But before going into Realm of Overclocking, I am trying to make an educated decision on what to use for a program/storage HDD drive...[at this point, I only have the Crucial C300 for the OS and the basic programs].

I keep hearing lots of good news about these Samsung F3/F4 spin drives.

What is all the hoopla over these drives and are they better than the Western Digital Black Editions?

What would you suggest I use for the programs and some storage?  Remember, I only have one more SATA 3 port with 6gb's left on this awesome motherboard so I would like to make an excellent choice!

Please give me some good ideas people!

Hi Soar

Well the Samsung F3s are good drives, I haven't tried the F4 so I don't know how that measures up. The Western Digital Blacks are normally quite good to but I wouldn't take too much notice of the SATA3 rating as it really doesn't seem to make hardly any difference on these magnetic drives. I would just be inclined to go for whichever is the best buy. picked up a Samsung F3 1 TB a few weeks ago and it has been performing excellently.

Ok, one more question:

Will I see a big difference between 5400 rpm's and 7200 rpm's?

Please remember, this is for my programs and storage, not the OS.

I would say yes and even though it's not so important for storage drives I would still go for the faster drive myself. Don't worry about all these "green" drives not that there is anything wrong with them for backups/storage but I feel that they are just a way of the manufacturer getting on the "save the planet" bandwagon. They often drop the speed of these drives as a way of paying lipservice to this so called efficiency. ::)

DM,

Ok, thanks!  I'm looking for a good deal on the 7200 rpm's drive.  I know there are lots of good deals, now I must make a decision on which one.

I think I'll stick with the Western Digital Cavier Black.  They've always worked well for me in the past.

I must admit I always used to go for the WD Blacks but I needed a storage drive a couple of months ago and so I thought I would try these Samsung F3  drives out. To be fair it has been excellent so far and the price was good. I paid £30ish for a 1 TB so good deal.

Y'know I've been thinking of getting 2 Radeon HD 6850s for my UD3 board. But I think I remember the 2nd PCIe slot only supports to a max of x4 lanes which would be a bummer.

Anyone have any thoughts on crossfiring on the UD3 board?
Also I'd like to ask if this would better off as it's own thread.

Ouch, not only that but if you have any PCI Express cards ( sound card for example ) it goes down to x1.

To answer your question, there's no point in going crossfire. For cards with this kind of processing power you need x8+ to really get the performance you've paid for.

Not sure about prices in the States but maybe look for a 6950/6970 instead? Best bang for the buck would be an unlockable 6950 but they're hard to get new as AMD released rev. 2 which is hardware locked.

Yea right after I posted, I was reading an article of how just getting a standalone 6850 or 6870 will be a great benefit to get right away rather than wait to get a crossfire. Because by then there will be single cards out that will most likely cost less than the crossfire and get around the same performance.
I think I'll just go ahead and get the 6850. I've read the price cost between the 6870 and 6850 doesnt justify the performance difference.

I"m pretty sure that board runs two pcie slots both at x8, and x8 is fine.

Hmm I'll have to check my manual again. I could've swornthe 2nd PCIe became x4 when the 1st PCIe was used.

Have my CPU OC'ed to 4.6 Ghz now and temp is a cool 32 C. I read that the arctic silver 5 takes about 200 hours to properly cure. I'm liking it so far. With a good case I hope to get the temp even down further if that's possible.

Faizoff,

I am not sure if you are interested, but TD just placed the Galaxy GeForce GTX 480 Super OC Video Card on sale after rebates and coupons for only $239.99.  New Egg has been selling these cards for $425.  I just picked up two [that was the limit].  It's a great deal and they will probably sell out quick.

Not sure if this in the GPU level you are looking, but it is a great deal.  You may want to look into it.

Sounds like a great deal, just wish they would do that sort of thing over here. Even older stock is kept at inflated prices usually.

Thanks Soar, funny thing is I've been rethinking if I really need a new video card. Since all the games I have currently can be played at max settings (Far Cry 2, HL 2,GTA SA, Bioshock, etc...)

My 4670 handles it all really well and there isn't any noticeable lag while playing. I guess the ratinale in getting a new upgraded video card was to get one that somewhat matches the system specs rather than actual use of it.

That sure looks like a great deal for the GTX 480. I was looking more in the range of ~$150. I will have to think about this though.

Thanks for pointing it out.

No problem Faizoff!  I purchased two because I like the idea of selling one of the cards on Ebay or Craigslist for around $340.  Then I will have paid around $140 for one of these cards.  There are rebates involved, so it takes more effort and watchfulness.  I've been doing stuff like this for the last few years and it has saved me literally thousands of dollars.  I do not like the idea of paying the full price for any electronics and that is why I am always looking for and finding good deals.

I just wish I could have purchased 50-100 of these units at this price, but there is a limit of 2 with the rebate.

That 4670 is a great card and should do fine for you!

After just checking as I don't usually use the nVidia cards it seems they go for around £300 or a bit more.

Hope this helps. ;)

Faizoff,

that NZXT Phantom looks very nice!  It has lots of nice features too:

7 Fan Cooling Options: Dual 200mm, Single 230/200mm, Triple 120mm, and Front 140mm [no worries about lack of air flow, that's for sure]!
Five 20W per Channel fan control totaling 100W [you would not need to purchase that Scythe fan controller]!
Fan LED on/off function [if you do not like the lights]!

It also has tons of excellent reviews...

Best of all, it looks kinda Star Trekish...

So, beam me up, Scotty Faizoff!

PS I just hope Mr. Spock doesn't pop out of the case when you open it!

LOL soar, yea it does look star trekkish. I've been going back and forth on a lot of things to get for my PC and the video card and case have been the 2 items that constantly change for me.

I've decided for the video card i'll stick with the 4670 as I posted earlier. It runs Crysis on high but not very high. I think High is good enough. Still looks great.

I'm glad you brought up the fan controller as I was looking into getting the one you got. Another product of interest I noticed at the store was a media dashboard with plenty of USB ports.

I tend to use a few USB ports and I'd like to have more in the front as I think it's waste to have usb ports at the back. So many devices I plug in and out (phones, external storage, etc..) The media dashboard gave me an idea to not look for a case that has more than 2 usb ports.

Again I hope this thread isn't getting derailed. Sorry if it is. ;-)

Thanks again for the feedback guys.

DM,

I think Faizoff's GA-P67A-UD3-B3 would fit perfectly in that NZXT case!  What do you think?

Also, sorry for not posting more info on my new Intel 2500k/GA-P67A-UD3-B3 set up!  I have had to leave this new rig on the shelf due to tax filing deadline that is soon approaching here in the USA.  Deadline is 04/18/11, so I am obligated to finish all the paperwork before then.

I am still looking for a good deal on the program/storage HDD and so far, not very many good deals.  I am still leaning toward the WD Caviar Black.  After installing a new HDD for the programs, I would love to try some over clocking.  Hope someone here can help me!

Faizoff, the nice thing about waiting patiently for a good deal on a GPU is that time is totally on your side!  All GPU's keep dropping in price as time goes by...so you can't lose by waiting.  I no longer game so, I no longer look for the high end cards for personal use, but Crysis was  one of my favorite games when I did play the games.

Faizoff, I have never even heard of a media dashboard!  Can you send a link showing it please?  I am not sure what you are referring to.

Both the Sniper and the HAF 932 have 4 USB 2's, 1 firewire, and 1 SATA port.  That is more than enough for me.  You must have tons of USB peripherals!

Have you ever considered a USB hub?  They are dirt cheap and you can set them up on your desk if you like.

Let us know what you decided upon for your new case and please do post some nice pics.  I know it will look real nice!

Hey Soar, this is what I'm talking about
http://www.amazon.com/Ultra-ULT40279-Internal-Card-Reader/dp/B001DNH916

It's a like a front board with usb ports, media card reader, etc..

Yea ideally I'm looking for 4 front side usb ports.  I don't have a million items but at times I plug in my phone, my wife's phone and need a flash drive plus my externals, etc.. so it becomes tedious to have to reach at the other ports.

I did have a USB hub many years ago but was really not impressed by it. Though I'm sure technology has improved in usb ports immensely since.

It's great to hear many opinion like this and I love having these discussions with very astute and well informed people. One of many reasons I love this place.

Oh and btw my fan will easily fit any case that is over 8" wide (insert that's what she said joke)

Right now the stock case I use measures 8" wide and has a very comfortable clearing for the fan with the case closed.

faizoff I would advise caution regarding these dashboards. I am sure some work very well indeed but I have seen a number of problems caused by them on the forum. If you are dead set then I would suggest that you build your system first and check everything is working properly before adding the dashboard.

Soar I use microSD cards from cameras and since my camera's usb port is defective, I'm forced to transfer by the card. That makes the dashboard or any card reader an attractive option.

But as mentioned I'm still just looking into them to see if they are really worth it.

Hi Soar

Well these are very easy to overclock compared to the previous incarnations of Intel processors. You can get a good OC by just upping the multiplier. I would suggest that byou read  runn3R's post here though:

http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,4072.0.html
Title: Re: Let the fun begin! I just received my new GA-P67A-UD3-B3!

(...)

Soar

Thanks Soar for your input. Finally done as you can see!

Yes I agree. It is alright for us who frequent the forum over long periods as we understand the seemingly high level of problems that are just because the "normal" products don't get seen on here. Another positive step forward.
