Title: usb 3 not working in windows 7 using GA-X58A-UD7 rev 2.0?
Post by: a5ian300zx on April 19, 2011, 05:52:17 pm
Hi All,

I have a issue that I need help with, I recently purchased my second a USB 3 portable HDD and it just does not work with windows 7 x64 everytime i plug it in it just flashes and disappears and sometimes comes up asking me to format HDD and when i click yes it does not recognise it and disappears again and you cannot copy data on to the drive.

I would like to Point that the same drive works perfect on USB 2 ports in USB 2 mode.

this is my second usb 3 drive as the first had the same issue (Samsung 1tb usb 3) and sent back and they told me it was data corruption on the drive and this new one i bought while they were sorting the Issue out is a Iomega 1TB usb 3 HDD portable but same issue.

details:

Bios Firmware = FC

I have updated the usb drivers to the latest one and have also tried the old drivers from the gigabyte website but still the same issue.

I tried to update the bios firmware to FD9 beta but the image is 2mb and my bios wont allow it because i have to flash with @Bios under windows first but i had few questions regarding this too.

1) would i loose all my saved setting in CMOS i.e my oc settings?
2) when i use the @BIOS do i load my optimised defaults and then and go into windows and use @BIOS?
3) once the flash file is 2mb can i install any firmware i.e. 1mb files as well as 2mb files or can i just install the Beta's which are normally 2mb files?

Your help and advise would be appreciated.

Hi

I don't know where you got the idea that you should use @BIOS for the update. That is totally the opposite of what we normally recommend. The best way to run the BIOS update is to use QFlash the BIOS utility for the job with a USB pendrive. I would advise you to do this anyway as it might fix your other USB problem.

The answers to your other questions are:

1) Yes you would as you need to make sure you clear your DMI data when doing the update.

2) Do not use @BIOS but do load Optimised BIOS Defaults afterwards

3) It is not that beta BIOS updates are 2MB but that the new BIOSes are 2MB.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have tried to use qflash to update the Bios but its does not recognise the image as the file size it too big and i read on forum (see below) that i would need to update it with @BIOS so it could amend the 1mb limit in qflash to 2mb.

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/43971-cant-update-ud7-rev-1-newest-beta-bios.html (http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/43971-cant-update-ud7-rev-1-newest-beta-bios.html)

it also say on the official gigbyte site to use @BIOS for the beta image ( i dont like flashing bios in windows) is there any other way around it.

current firmware: FC = 1mb and the new ones are around 2mb

Well it is news to me but if that is indeed true then fair enough.

I can't think why it wont work though if that is correct. I take it that you have made sure that it is the correct file for your BIOS/motherboard ?

Regarding the drive have you tried a different cable as USB3 is a different cable to USB2 ?

Hi,

I have downloaded the latest beta firmware from below.

http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html (http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html)

I have tried three different cables the one that came with my samsung usb3 drive, Akasa usb3 cable and the one that comes with the iomega drive.

same issue.

The drive itself could of course be faulty as we have had reports of several other USB3 drives that wouldn't work. It could of course also be a problem with the motherboard but there haven't been many reports of this so far.

true i could be a bad batch as this is the first batch of the drive, I still have my samsung replacement drive which i will open up and test that first if the issue is still present i will then update the Bios firmware and then if its still present i will have to RMA the Motherboard (hope not as i have to remove all my watercooling)

Dark Mantis which firmware version do you use on your one?

Hi

I am running the F7 still on my board as I have found it to be stable and had no problems that have made me want to update it. I am not using any USB3 devices though.

Hi

You are lucky! It is trying to warn you off. :o

I would seriously advise you not to use @BIOS. If you want to update your BIOS use the QFlash BIOS Utility as it is much safer.

Hi,

i dont know then how to use the 2mb image as it does not work with qflash, I have managed find a newer FD1 firmware which still has the same issues, I have then flashed it to the older FB firmware and still the same issue the new Samsung replacement drive does not even work it just beeps like its got a lack of power and when i connect it to a usb3 splitter cable (two usb3 and one usb3 micro) it still does not work. Now i will be going to a friends on Monday who also happens to have a new sandybridge PC I will test both drives there to see

1) both the portabel usb3 HDD drives are faulty
2) if my motherboard usb3 ports were faulty. (which i hope not)

then again the first iomega drive seemed to work on the FB Bios but then just through and error while trying to copy a file and was also transferring a on 25 Mbps

hi all,

just an update on this issue, I have now tried the drives on my friends P67 gigabyte motherboard and the results are as follows.

1) Samsung drives works fine and the Iomega still has issues just kept crashing each time you copy anything to it.

conclusion: Iomega drive is faulty.  - I have requested a replacement.

2) which also means i have issues with my motherboard but i have just read an interesting info that Dark Mantis mentioned on a another users issue that the USB3 and SATA3 both user the same bus now on my motherboard i have the sata3 controllers all disabled not sure if that makes a difference? if not then my motherboard is faulty

Hi

Well getting a bit closer now. The SATA3 and USB3 do share the same bus but that wouldn't affect one working or not. The Disabling of the SATA3 will only make the USB3 work better if anything. I take it that you have checked that USB3 is enabled in the BIOS along with any other USB settings.

YEP I have checked all usb are enabled inc usb 3 within Bios - I will check the sata3 settings and see if it makes a difference.

if not then RMA for the motherboard and time to upgrade to sandy bridge perhaps :)

Hi,

just an update to me it seems like the MB is not providing enough power to the USB 3 hence the issues - I have flashed it with many bios firmwares with no success except the 2mb image which does not work for me just keep getting an error messages.

I have ordered an Akasa PCI express USB3 card with onboard Molex connector and can handle different power sources - I will give this a try and then my last resort would be RMA :)

I like to figure things out and get down to the problem :)

Hi,

I will keep this thread informed with updates.

I will just post below the BSOD i get when i try update the firmware to the 2mb image from @BIOS and the FlashSPI method using USB stick does not work with 2mb image.

update:

I have received my Akasa 2 port usb3 pcie card and have installed it into the PC (note it uses the same chipset nec) and with on board molex connector and can handle all three voltages and guess what all my problems have been resolved.

both usb3 drives work flawlessly now with an average speed of 110MBps.

so that proves the issue is with the board not providing enough power to the USB3 ports on all the 1MB firmware i did try if only the 2mb firmware worked i could have tested this too.

That is interesting and thanks for sharing it. I think it would be a good idea to let GGTS know as well as RMAing the board for local inspection and replacement.

Just enter your email address and click on the language of choice.

Hi

do i just give them a link to this thread as all the details are here? do you know how long it takes? i did not want to RMA at the moment as it means i have to drain my watercooled system and redo the loop (maybe it gives me an excuse to upgrade the tubing and res)

Well if it is important for you to have a working machine at the moment just contact GGTS for now and see what they say. You will need to give them a brief run down of the problem but you can add the link to this thread as well if you feel it would be helpful.
