Title: Major problems with GV-N460OC-1GI
Post by: AceRimmer77 on April 24, 2011, 12:39:30 am
Hello gigabyte forumites, I purchased the GV-N460OC-1GI about 6 weeks ago and have been really enjoying for the first 2-3 weeks until I started getting affected by random black screens and "the display driver has stopped responding and has succsessfully recovered" message, it was rare until about 2 days ago when it was happening all the time even seconds after windows had booted up, I have uninstalled different drivers and used driver sweeper thinking it was a corrupted driver to no avail, I tried a friends PSU Corsair tx850 but the problem persisted. In a deperate bid to sort it I reinstalled my OS but all I learnt from that is that it would not happen with just the standard vga driver installed, once an nVidia driver was installed it would go insane with lock ups and black screens. i currently have my old 8800gt in and have no problems what so ever, been on now 12 hours without a hitch, I hope my card is not faulty as I am a faithful gigabyte buyer (love your mobos) and like the build quality and would hate to go through the hassle of an RMA.  :'(
My specs are:
Intel Core 2 Duo e6850
Asus P5QL-E
OCZ Gamexstream 700watt
4gb pc6400 2x2gb
Creative xfi xtreme music

Hi and welcome to the Gigabyte Forum.

It sounds to me like one of those occurances where the card doesn't like being overclocked the way the factory does it. This happens sometimes and if that is the case you have a few options. You can either RMA the card, return it to the retailer or downclock it to standard levels. If you kknow how to overclock you can often then OC it yourself and get even faster results.

Hi Dark Mantis, I didn't think that the factory oc would do that in normal 2d mode as it never happened when gaming and I play some graphically intense games like bad company 2, I think I will go down the RMA route as messing around with the graphics card clock speed would only void my warranty and I am over the 30 days with pixmania, I was reading that my vcore might not be getting enough volts, would that make it happen?
Thanks for your help Dark Mantis.  :)
Computers, who would have em eh.  :D

Yes I would have to agree there that RMA is probably your best course of action. Please keep us updated with your progress though.

No problem DM, thank you for your swift reply.  :) Will keep you updated, hope the RMA process is swift as I was really enjoying my GTX460, brilliantly priced card for the performance it gives out and I am hobbling along with my near 4 year old 8800gt though its been a real trooper. Where is Gigabytes nearest RMA centre from me Dark Mantis? I live in the Magherafelt area of Northern Ireland, I am thinking The Netherlands.

Normally the recommended solution is to return it to your retailer who will either replace the card or send it for repair. There is a Gigabyte Service Centre in the UK.

Sending it back to pixmania on Tuesday as the post office will be closed tomorrow. They are going to repair or replace it, can gfx cards be repaired if they are borked?

Some things can be repaired but a lot of problems would mean a replacement.

Just a quick update on the status of my RMA, Pixmania recieved the card on the 2nd of may and have now sent it to Gigabyte for technical testing,  so hopefully I will be in possession of a lovely new 460 soon.  :)

Got a brand new spangly graphics card from pixmania today as the old one must be borked as they never told me what the outcome of the testing gigabyte done with it, all in all a happy camper as I had heard horror stories about pixmania's after sales service.  ;D ;D ;D

You are the first one I have heard of that has had anything to do with Pixmania's aftersales service and it seems alright in this case.

I know I even forgot to send my return coupon with the old graphics card so I thought that I was in trouble for sure but I had sent my original invoice and the label on the parcel had the RMA number on it so all in all pretty happy at the minute.

The new card worked fine as I understand it but I don't know what problem was found with the original card.

That is good news to hear for certain. I figured that was the case but I wasn't sure.

Hello All,
I am having very similar problems with this same card (works in safe mode, get black screens or sometimes blue screens [that point to an error with the nvidia card] when trying to boot into full windows). I have had the card for about a year, and this just started happening 4 days ago. I tried installing numerous driver versions (latest, next to latest, the ones on the disc that came with the vid card), with full driver wiping each time, but to no avail. I also did a fresh OS install (win7 64-bit), but still the same issue. So based on this I suppose that an RMA will be required, my problem is that rma.gigabyte.us times out for me (multiple locations, browser versions, computers tried to load it). I called customer support but they said I have to use the form at rma.gigabyte.us. Are others able to access this site? Are there any other possible fixes or is it likely RMA is my only option?

Thanks,
Mark

edit: I tried a 8800gtx  last night with all of my other stuff the same, and it worked no problem
second edit: the website is now working
