This has absolutely nothing to do with computers but.......
just looking through the TV guide for Today (Monday 9th May) and I noticed that on BBC3 tonight at 7.30 pm there is a chance for all over those of a slightly older disposition to enjoy a programme from their childhood........
Noggin The Nog is being shown!!!
Now come on, how many of you remember Noggin the Nog? For those in the UK, if you have never seen or heard of him, take 10 minutes out of your busy schedule and watch this, you'll love it! Created by Oliver Postgate this was a staple of Children's TV between 1959 - 1965. Oliver also created such wonders as: The Clangers; Bagpuss; Ivor The Engine; The Pogles and the Pingwings. For more info on Oliver Postgate check here: http://www.oliverpostgate.co.uk/
Those were the days when we only had 2 TV channels (BBC and ITV) and all TV was in Black & White. Children's TV was limited to 15 minutes at lunchtime with a programme called "Watch With Mother" and 1 hour 45 minutes in the evening, finishing at 5.45 pm for the News. Computers were housed in large rooms and used punched tape or cards and were basically nothing more than giant valve operated calculators.

When I worked in the mills in the 60s, the backshift finished at 10pm and I got home in time to watch the epiloque then a white spot and a hiss and some guy saying rebember to switch of your tv.set. Yeh I remeber noggin ..Absic
-
Well that's ok for you youngsters I guess but it was a bit after my time! I can remember when there was only one TV channel and you had to watch it on a 6" black and white screen in a box about the size of a medium cupboard. Who said good old days? Huh! ::)
-
I did say for those of a certain age DM ..... not antiques! ;)
-
Ah, true enough sonny!
-
I just laughed so hard I broke dust!

See, forums don't have to be dull and boring. They can be amusing too.
And I got so carried away that Noggin the Nog was going to be on TV tonight that I posted the wrong channel. It's BBC4 not BBC3 ......... I must be older than I thought!
-
Ah, that's the trouble the memory isn't what it used to be. Probably just as well as I can forget some of those things I'd rather not remember! :'(
-
Memories now, if I could just remember what they were, I'm sure I would be happy to forget some of them!
-
Noggin the Nog?
Never heard of it ever before!
What planet are you guys from again?
I thought for sure you were all from the Monty Python generation...you know, as in planet Earth?
Perhaps I was mistaken! ???

Me neither coming from OZ....5yrs now living in the fridge......You have to try and understand the general English mentality, the centre of the world is in fact England, take my mother-in-law, she unshakably believes everything invented in the last 200 years started here, ...she was amazed when she visited OZ in 2003 that we actually had supermarkets , sealed roads and sugar came in packets, even the white lines down the middle of the road mean something in Australia where in the UK their there purely for decoration........... and car indicators/blinkers are an optional extra and used as such!.
"That should put the cat amongst the corgi's"

Ah Allan you have so much learn. The UK is not the centre of the world it's the centre of the Universe. ;D
-
Hi Allan. You see absic knows that you mean uk and not england, we also have Scotland and wales, Glad you have white lines down the centre of the roads. you can thank the scots for inventing the Tar to make your roads. By the way noggin was brilliant. I watched it on another one of the scots invention..a tv.
-
Ah the 2nd part of Noggin The Nog tonight...... Just can't wait to find out what's going on with that pie.
Exciting stuff isn't it Jannie? :P
-

Ah, the good old days is what you are talking about. You only had to do something minor wrong and they would send you on a cruise to a far away land for a nice sunny holiday.....actually fairly much the same as nowadays when I come to think about it!
-
Lets all join hands and sing.
Neighbours everbody loves good neighbours
Cant hear ..sing up everyone :)
-
Ah Neighbours (spelt correctly unlike they do in the USA) is a prime example of what happens when something does not originate in the UK! :P
-
Keep an eye out Absic for Hectors House repeats.. he's just a bad old hector
-
I have a feeling this thread could run for an awful long time at this rate! ;D
-
I'm waiting for the original Woodentops along with Bill And Ben The Flowerpot Men (Not the more recent animated version)
I have to say Jannie, I was never into Hector's House but my brother, who is 3 years younger, adored him.
Of course once we finished reminiscing about these really old programmes then we can start on the really good stuff.......
Fireball XL5, Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet there really was a plethora of good children's TV back then.
Sadly though, there was also some really bad stuff.... (note here, not made in the UK I really mean!) Do you remember Clarence the Cross eyed Lion in "Daktari". What about Flipper? There was also Skippy the Bush Kangaroo. (probably both been barbecued by those Aussies now!)
-
Gosh you really take me back to my childhood Absic...stcky back plastic and all
For gods sake dont say.cr.....jack ...hahahha
-
With Leslie Crowther if I remember right!
-
Don't forget Peter Glaze!
Actually the original host was Eamonn Andrews and his comedic sidekick was Ronnie Corbett who started his long TV career with this children's programme.
Other Hosts included Michael Aspel, Ed "Stewpot" Stewart & Stu Francis. Apart from Peter Glaze & Ronnie Corbett other comedians included Don Maclean (Not the singer!) Bernie Clifton, Little & Large to name a few.
Edit: Just found this link which explains more and also has a few clips: http://www.britishclassiccomedy.co.uk/2011/01/its-friday-its-five-to-five-and-its-crackerjack/

Yes I forgot Eamonn and Ronnie. I think most of the British comedians of the time hosted the show a bit like Blue Peter.

NORMAL SERVICE WILL BE RESUMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Haha Jannie! ;D

Ah! That was when we had the Interlude now who remembers those?
-
So what did you do during the interlude????
-
I used to watch the interlude with fascination, especially the potters wheel! :D
-
I had to go and pump up the primus stove and put on the kettle and when I left the living room, every one shouted close the door. coz it was the only room with a coal fire
Yessss the good old days ;D
Hey I just remembered, what about In Town Tonight, when the guy said stop london
And I suppose you can name the panel on what's my line. Dont cheat and google it
-
Think maybe I'm a bit young for those programmes Jannie.
Back then my Mum used to pack us children off to bed at 6.00 pm, except on a Saturday when we could stay up until 7.00 pm to watch Doctor Who. :P
-
ok well its goodnight from me and goodnight from him
-
Hey scary stuff the original Dr Who series! Do you remember the starting screen it always seemed to say "Dr Oho"
-
Hi Jerry. yeh when dr.who started with william hartnell it was a new dimension we entered and it was scary stuff. He was still the best Dr.--I wonder if you remember him in The Army Game???
-
Yes Jannie and the TARDIS actually looked the part when it started in London much better than it has in most of it's locations since. I must admit I can't remember him in the Army Game.
-
Dr Who, Black & White TV, Saturday early evening hiding behind the sofa when the Daleks first appeared! William Hartnel has always been my favourite incarnation of the Doctor!
The Army Game was well before my time...... Just shows how old you really are Jannie! :o
-
This has absolutely nothing to do with computers but....... I never got into Dr Who because........the tardus doesn't have a Gigabyte board, uses older star drive technology rather then USB drives and the sonic screw drivers don't work, ... I know I brought one!!! and finally Daleks ran on Barton cores....that's why they use to spin around wildly and blew smoke.....
The heart of Monty python (Spike Milligan RIP) is still in the courts, ... his last request in his will was the inscription of "See I Told You I Was Sick" to be engraved on his tomb stone.....I hope he gets his request and proves to his family he was right
DM and runn3R.........I think it's high time Gigabyte produced a real s***ter of a board to give all these people something better to do !!!
Jannie......My grandad was born in Edinbrough in 1878.........did you know him?...never mind , put the kettle on , I'll be there by half 5.
absic!........DONT ....EVER....SAY ... ANYTHING!.....bad about bill and Ben ever again!.........My Bill and Ben paraphernalia collection just hit 713
Aussie Allan
-
Allan. can you tell me where edinborough is. we have Edinburgh in scotland and I cant remember Spike ever being connected with monty python, maybe you mean John Gleese????? And now to something completely different
-
Jannie
Dyslexia or is it dixlexai......anyway, I got it big time!...Thank God for spill check.....So Spike and John are related ! It has been a fun post!......My gramps Archie Snowden Thomson was in fact born at that place beginning with "E" then immigrated to OZ.....smart bugger!

Hey Allen, I have nothing bad to say about the original Bill and Ben puppets. My childhood was full of anticipation of them appearing on Watch With Mother.
I am however, a little less enamoured by the animated revamp which really does nothing to enhance the original but rather detracts from the innocence and naivety that was present with the puppets and their visible strings!
Now Spike Milligan, there was a comic genius. All other comedians just follow in his wake.

No offence taken at all ...all just good clean fun and I agree...just goes to show ... computer generated animation is not totally backwards compatible
The strings were part of the overall effect......I struggle on a day to day bases to find content on the box for my two young wombats to watch that I feel comfortable with .........Now spike, fond memories sitting on my dads lap watching him laugh till he cried.....he was ahead of his time Spike.!.....How times change, the only two shows I watch now are House and NCIS.....Whats coming out of the BBC the last decade is just not worth the time!
Aussie Allan

Ni I agree. TV is going downlhill very rapidly and if you have even half a brain and want more than Britain's got Talent or some other worthless show where people are just making fools of themselves you are hard pressed to find it. I hardlyt watch the box any more and find the forum more entertaining! Certainly a better class of comedian on here. ;D
-
I actually class dm and Absic on the same par as the two ronnies..
Allan its all fun on here. dont take things to serious cobber....flip a lot weed ;D

I'm not sure that is a compliment Jannie! One is dead and the other is too small to be noticed! ::)

Hahahah ;D Done fear mate your both very well noticed
-
More like Hinge & Brackett Jannie! ;D
