Title: Will Gigabyte release new BIOSes that unlock only one core instead of two?
Post by: Gliep on September 20, 2009, 11:37:37 am
ASUS has just released new BIOS versions for its AM3 motherboard line up that allows you to unlock the third or fourth core on the Phenom II X2. When you are unsuccessful unlocking both, you can have a try unlocking either one separately.

Will Gigabyte create new BIOS versions that also do this for their AM3 boards with AMD 700 series chipsets?

Yes it would be good to be able to attempt a core unlocks independently.

I have a 550 BE and after I unlock 1 of the new cores seems to be failing on prime and crashing the system even if I set the multiplier to 5x. If I could attempt to unlock the other one only I think it might actually work.

As it is I'm stuck with two cores only. :(

Guess I got what I paid for.

Can I unlock only one core with F1 ? I've used only F3 and F4 bios versions.

I set EC to hybrid and ACC to Auto.

Can you recommend me what ACC values I should try per core (positives /negatives higher/lower ) ?

Hi,
I cannot recommend any settings for the ACC values, each chip is different, :(
That is a hands on job that you will have to suck and see, google is your friend here, 8)
The default is -2 and It is used to allow a core to be tweaked without a voltage increase as some of the diabled cores can be a bit ropey,
This may have been why they were disabled in the first place, ;D

I would like to know this too.
Anyway I've tried F1 version and I can see now 3 cores and L3, but it's not stable, sometimes it will boot with 2 cores, sometimes with 3 cores, but the L3 remains activated in both cases

Hi All

Yes, I confirm - bios need to have following description: "Add CPU core control option".

After I checked the website, so far, bios'es for MA770T-UD3, MA770T-UD3P, MA785GT-UD3H, MA785GMT-UD2H/US2H, MA790X-UD4P & MA790FXT-UD5P support this.

And you can enable these cores not only in BIOS but also under EasyTune 6 (ET6) software:
Tuner -> Advanced -> Core Boost : Enabled, then the system will reboot for updating BIOS of EC firmware and will be ready for unleash the hidden CPU cores.

Now you will be able to enable Core 2 and / or Core 3 under ET6

As I noted in the other thread, I don't think the unlocked cores are necessarily designated as Core 2 or Core 3 so this may not help folks with 1 "bad" unlocked core. After unlock the "bad core" may be Core 0 or 1, which you can't disable.  :(

EDIT: Unfortunately my bad core is core 0... I wonder why in the new bios you can disable only core 2 and core 3.In riva tuner is the same story... I hope this will be fixed :)

I have the GA-MA785GMT-UD2H.
I the BIOS released say that F4A BIOS have new CPU Core Control option.
I updated. Then in turn BIOS to Hybrid and ACC as Enable (all or individual), qhen i save the modifications (F10) and turned on the PC, nothing occur. Then i enter in BIOS again the modifications not saved (ACC is turned off).
Don't appear nothing in BIOS like as CPU Core Control option.

Where it appear?

In previous BIOS release (F3) the unlock functioned normally, but don't post, becouse one core is not good.

What?
But mine is 4 cores. I can umblock in previous F3 BIOS release, but is unstable.
In F4A is not possíble to umblock... and de CPU Core Control dont appear... and when i try to umblock, when i save modifications (F10) the ACC return to "turned Off".
I don't understand why.

Yours is not 4 cores, right?
I think that with the new BIOS the PC is very unstable with 4 cores unlocked and the motherboard loads safe settings of the BIOS.The Cpu control option is only availble with the new bios so you can't do anything.Wait for another BIOS to try or ask somebody else. That's just my opinion.Good luck!

Hello,
For the mainboard Gigabyte MA785GT-UD3H what bios sould i install in order to have the "core control option"
Now i`m having bios version F3, but i see some F4, F4B and F5A. Which one should i install?

P.S: F4B and F5A are beta versions, are these ok?
Thanks.

L.E: The version F4B i found on the arabic site of gigabyte. On the other gigabyte wesites F4B don`t appear, but there is F5B.

i would try F4 first as it's not beta. if no such option then go with the beta F5A

yes F4B and F5A, F5B are all betas.  beta bios is always marked by letter after the digit.

Beekeeper thanks for answer.
The F4 version (not beta one) is only for rev 1.1, i have rev 1.0 for this motherboard.
The F4B is available only here:
http://arabic.english.giga-byte.com/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3154
If i`ll install it ... i guess that that BIOS will be in english language? Or arabic?
The F5A is available here:
http://www.gigabyte.lv/products/mb/bios/ga-ma785gt-ud3h_10.html
But for the F5A it doesen`t any available specification that it adds that core control option in BIOS.

For the gigabyte website available for my country ... the latest BIOS version available is F4 ... but only for 1.1. For 1.0 it`s available only F3.
Title: Re: Will Gigabyte release new BIOSes that unlock only one core instead of two?
Post by: Beekeeper on February 03, 2010, 04:11:17 pm
hmm ???, F4 is listed as BIOS for rev.1.0:
http://www.giga-byte.co.uk/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=3154
so it should work with this Rev. - the only limitation is that you will not have EuP support. but gigabyte bioses have usually more fixes than the one(s) listed at the website.

now i can see F4B being described as "Add CPU Core Control option" so this version for sure has it. all bioses are english, so no worry

as F4 and F5A are newer than F4B so they should also have this function implemented

good luck mate :)

OK, i updated my BIOS to F4 ... but i only have the option to disable Core 2 or Core 3, or both 2 and 3. I need to disable Core 0 ... is there a posibility that in the future BIOS release to have this option integrated there?
Thanks a lot.

P.S: I saw a bug there, under Core Control i have to choose between disable and "manaul".

An update of the Core control feature could be great for many users.

Thx

Agreed, I don't understand why they will not fix this. If asus can do it then I am sure Giga can do it. For me personally it is core 1 after unlocking that needs disabled. It does not make any sense to me that the cores that you can disable are the 2 good cores......

Essentially, Gigabyte said that it will store the old microcode in the secondary BIOS chip, and allow you to do normal BIOS updates on the primary chip. Does this mean that you can't have a backup firmware of your latest BIOS should the first chip corrupt? Gigabyte told us no. The company has upgraded its BIOS chips to be able to store extra information.

The secondary BIOS chip will still backup your BIOS as usual, but have room for the old AMD microcode. When you update your BIOS, your system will boot using the new BIOS code but it will be injected with the old AMD microcode, allowing you to continue to unlock your CPU cores
