Title: Do The USB3 Etron EJ 168 chips have problems
Post by: grahdeb on October 12, 2011, 06:56:31 am
I am looking at purchasing the Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD4 motherboard, and after checking reviews I have come across people warning about problems with the Etron EJ168 USB3 controller. I wanted to check if anyone on this forum has had problems with the Etron EJ168 controller, and if so, have they been fixed with driver updates.

Hi and welcome.

There are obviously  a few posts on the forum here complaining of USB3 issues as you would expect but no more than would be normal for any other component. Also it is still in it's infancy and so some problems are going to need to be ironed out along the way. The only thing that I can say I have noticed with this chip is that it is very fussy when it comes to updates and you MUST remove all traces of the previous drivers before updating them. We usually advise using something like Driver Sweeper to do this.

Dark Mantis,
Thanks for your reply,
I agree there are always teething problems, but seeing as I am looking to buy the board with the Etron EJ 168 USB3, I dont' want to build a system and find the USB3 doesn't work as the case will have front USB3. I noticed there has been a driver update for the Etron USB3, was this to fix problems or are the problems with the Etron controller itself or are the problems over exaggerated. Sorry for so many questions but I am trying to decide weather to take a chance with the Etron USB3, as I really wanted to purchase the Z68XP-UD4, or look for a motherboard with a different USB3 controller. Any reply's appreciated.

It worked only one time here.
I am searching for an older driver but can't find one.

Update:

This seems to work.

When you plug the USB3 device, do not push it hard but gently into the USB3 port.

It seems silly but it works. USB3 is a sensitive interface. ;D
