Title: Any word on any updates to the S1080
Post by: snafubar on December 29, 2011, 08:31:11 am
I have had a 1080 for a few months now and I am extremely happy.

I would like to know if anyone has heard of a new model coming out in the near future.

I would especially like to see something like a blend of the ASUS EEE SLATE EP121 for the increased screen size with everything the 1080 currently has and a ram slot capable of handling an 8gb sodimm and a better CPU.

One of these days someone will build my perfect windows tablet.

I've been checking as well but I have not seen anything.

I have one as well and I absolutely love it.

I would not want anything too big and heavy (comparatively speaking) like the 121 though. Same 10.1 inch screen or 11.6 at the most.
Intel N2600 or N2800 CPU. Stay away from that lame duck Z670.
A nice 1280X800 resolution screen would be perfect. I found out how to hack the windows registry to give me 1152x864 and 1024x768. I use it at either of those settings all the time now.

Keep everything else and you've got a winner!!! DO NOT TAKE OUT MY ETHERNET JACK PLEASE!! Very important.

I would have to agree there. WiFi etc is fine but cannot compare to a hardwired connection for speed and performance.

Gigabyte has a S1081 in the pipeline according to Engadget. Hopefully we will see specs in their coverage of CES 2012.
What I am hoping for:
Intel N2650/2800 CPU
2GB RAM
Ethernet port
Bluetooth (send and receive like current model)
VGA port
SDXC port supporting UHS-1
SSD/HDD SATA 3 interface
1280x800 Res 10.1 screen (to be Windows 8 ready)
~ 800 gram weight.
All the other current external ports

My extensive business use review should be up on youtube soon of the current model.

S1081 spotted.

Same as original S1080 but with HDMI and Atom N2800. Unfortunately the display resolution is the same. So I'll probably keep my S1080 and see whether there will be an S1082 as I expect there must be in order for Windows 8 Metro to work (does not work on 1024x600 Microsoft decision).

Wonder if the SATA port is still sata 2 or if they upgrade d to sata 3.

Closeup of the S1081 and the docking station. Nothing much I have not already said however.

My review with my tablet is uploading now. Look like it's gonna take 10 hours though :( 618 minutes left. Don't think my internet was that slow.

Once it gets uploaded you'll find a detailed look at how I use it in my work environment some pics here and there.

I'll be hitting on some of the good decisions gigabyte made...
2 usb ports
ethernet port.. even if it makes the tablet thicker than an ipad
hard keyboard button

I look at how easy it is to type in WS Word and create/edit a document (Nothing complex.. although I could do one on request)
Browsing
reading a PDF
using menus and drop downs
clicking links in internet explorer
Microsoft Outlook Web Access

I did not report on video or audio playback. If you want me to I could.

Hi

Normally when I do a review I try and cover the hardware first and then the use of ther device. Obviously it helps to try and cover all aspects of it where possible. I take it that the review is being uploaded to the Reviews section ?

The video uploaded to youtube, but they rejected it because it was too long. So after 10 hours of waiting for the upload to complete I have to find a kogical place to break it and send it over.

I didn't realise  that it was a video review that you were planning. Well done. I haven't had the chance to watch it al yet but it seemed to be starting alright. ;)

Please let me know what you think. I have started a thread for it in the reviews section.

There are some things I'd like to say to Gigabyte concerns I have, but I did not want to put them in the video.

I was looking up Windows 8 tablets yesterday and today. I was also rereading the hardware requirements and looking at the specifications of the NM10 chipset that the Atoms use. Something occurred to me.

The S1081 is not the Windows 8 tablet. Although it is probably going to be released just before the OS goes live. So why is Gigabyte producing it?
I based my question on the fact that according to the specification on the S1081, it has a most glaring problem in that it will not run Metro. Then when you look at the other things Microsoft is asking for the S1081 is not going to measure up. So why produce it knowing that a lot of business users are going to want a tablet that will run Windows 8 Metro.

My theory is that either they are going to update the specs before the S1081 launches or release a second Windows 8 tablet when the OS launches in Q4. But if they do that it will kill the S1081 sales (depending on the price) as it will undoubtedly be a more appealing machine.

Added to this the S1081 is not that different from the S1080. It just has a faster processor and HDMI.

So what is the plan?

I see that Gigabyte is present at CeBit, with a nice looking powerful new Ultra book. Hopefully there is an S108x in the bag with a 1280x800 resolution screen. CeBit starts tomorrow officially.

Well gigabyte has an announcement on April 8th. Might be the S1081; it is supposed to come out around this time. But then it may not be. But if it is... and it cannot run Windows 8 metro when Windows 8 comes out. Not sure if I'd be interested since Windows 8 tablets  will be out in a few months. But for those that want a seriously good Windows 7 tablet. It would be the tablet to get.

I'm sure you have noticed by now that the S1081 has been showing up at online retailers around the net. Some point to a mid May availability of the tablet. Which is next month!!!

Seems someone has gotten their grubby hands on one. Sogi.com.tw has a really short hands on video on youtube. It has a Windows Index of 3.4, this being the gaming graphice score.

The S1081 is out boys and girls. Netbooknews has an unboxing video posted and several retaillers have been showing it on preorder for this month. So it should avialable this week or next week from those vendors.

Processor and Intel N2600 N2800. Stay away from this lame duck Z670.
Good screen 1280X800 resolution would be ideal. I learned how to hack into the registry Windows, to give me 1152x864 and 1024x768. I use it on any of these options all the time.

So how do you like it?

Do you think the thickness is an issue?

I'm going to skip the S1081 as I already have an S1080 and see what they bring next year. The Clovertrail Atom should be failrly impressive. If it has the same or better ports that is. I need the ethernet port and no other tablet has one.
