Title: Raid 10 or Raid 5 and how too? GA-990FXA-UD7
Post by: Timiney on February 10, 2012, 04:47:15 am
Hi all,

I'm building a new computer using the GA-990FXA-UD7 motherboard and i want to either have RAID 10 (4x WD Black 2TB) or RAID 5 (3x WD Black 2TB).

I just need to know what is best (Speed and redundancy) - also HDD wastage if one of them dies.

Also i've never done RAID before and i know the MB has automatic RAID 0  (Turbo XHD- Full Automatic RAID 0/Stripe) but i don't think the Automatic RAID work for RAID 10 or RAID 5.

Thank you for your help :)

With the criteria you set .......the Raid 5 with 3HDDs will give you higher reads but slower writes (but still faster than a single disc) and a redundancy of 1 drive failure ......the 10 setup will give you slightly slower reads over raid 5 but better writes ......redundancy of the 10 setup ..... again 1 but up to 2 if the right drives fails ;D

Raid 5 is more cost effective and it loves odd numbers of drives .....sweet spot for performance verses cost ..... 5 Drives.
