Motherboards with Intel processors / u.2 to SATA on Gigabyte Mobo

Not that board is gonna massively change the answer on this but GA-Z270X-Ultra Gaming (not yet owned)

Has a u.2 connector with 32Gbit bandwidth so basically 4GB/s or PCIE 3.0 x4 equivalent. I have heard (not confirmed) that you can connect 4 SATA drives to that by way of a cable but how? Surely it needs some sort of chipset to provide the SATA ports?

Anyone able to categorically answer if this works or not. Another 4 SATA ports instead of a useless U.2 port would be a major plus for me

Hi vabiii3,
I'll add the following to dmdilks suggestions.

Stick with BIOS F5 or earlier for your 4th gen CPU.  You'll ensure better stepping performance, power management and stability sticking with a 4th gen BIOS over 5th gen.  [F6, F7] 

Make sure the BIOS is properly configured

Set CSM Support Always
Set Storage Boot Option Control to UEFI Only
Set Windows 8 Features to [Windows8]
If you see an option for Secure Boot, enable it

**Do not enable Fast Boot, you don't need it. 

When installing Windows, boot to USB with UEFI(prefix), and use shift+F10 to open and command prompt and convert the disk to GPT.  Install windows to that partition.   

The commands are as follows

Press Shift+F10 to open the command prompt window
Type command: "diskpart"
Type command: "list disk"
Select the drive to use as boot drive
Type command: "select disk" <the number of drive>
Type command: "clean"
Type command: "convert gpt"

Exit the command prompt, select the drive you converted to GPT above and install windows. 

If you can see video from the card on your monitor, it will work in windows without issue.  User HDMI or DP, no adapters and not to a giant TV.

Also upgrading to GeForce GTX1660Ti gpu.

One thing here have you tried this Video card? I have Had problems with the AMD GA-970A-UD3P board. They don't like the new cards even after a bios update too. Not saying yours will do this, but I'm telling you to make sure that card works before you do all of this.

There really nothing you have to do other than install windows 10. Just make sure you are booting in UEFI. One thing I would do is only have that SSD connected. Once you get to where it ask you if want to do a upgrade or custom? Click on custom. Once on the screen just click on the drive and then click NEW in the bottom right. That will setup the drive. Once that is done just click the lg partition and click next.

Now if you want a off line account disconnect from the internet. You get to a point where it ask to connect to the internet. Click I don't have internet. Then click I will use limited use. It will bring you to the next screen where can add a name. At that point reconnect to the internet. From that point on you are all set.

I want to upgrade to Windows 10, clean install, on a new SSD. Also upgrading to GeForce GTX1660Ti gpu.
Are their any drivers, bios updates or other items I might require for this MoBo, to help ensure a reasonably painless process?
I have found the procedure for installing W10 on a GPT partition, and that seems pretty straightforward.

Advice?

What do you have the board connected too? A TV, Speakers, or Headset?

Using the Graphics card it is using the HDMI or Display port. When you use the graphics card you have that connected to like a TV or Monitor that has speakers. That is when you using the Video card drivers.

What driver for the sound for the board you using? The are two drivers for the board. Make sure you are using the right one.

One thing you could try is let Windows install the driver and see what happens.

In all the computers I have built. Plus that is like well over a 100. I can't remember when was the last time I installed a sound driver. Since Windows 10 has come out I haven't install any drivers other then the video driver.

If everything you have tried and nothing helps you might have to contact support.

I just built a computer with GigaByte B760 Gaming X DDR 4 and windows 11. Use a Radeon graphic, and I got problems with the sound. The sound mutes +/- 1 second randomly. Only few seconds between it happens.  I uninstalled the Radeonsoftware, but the problem is still there. All software are up to date. What can this be?

I don't update drivers and the Bios unless I really have too. Video driver is like 6 months old. I'll let that go till I really have to update it. If I'm not having any problems I leave well enough alone.

Indeed, you are correct.  When flashing, you want to remove as many variables or points of failure as possible.  Back up first, ensure the system is connected to UPS, then flash from within the BIOS. 

As far as OS updates go.  I usually use what windows update offers.  There are some circumstances. such as audio drivers or video where you get additional configuration options, so in that case install the manufacturers drivers.
