Gigabyte X79 UP4 won't post -- series of repeating beeps
« on: March 17, 2013, 05:32:17 am »
Hello,
I've just purchased an X70 UP4 and am having trouble posting. When I switch power on to the motherboard, the CPU fan starts to rotate, then a repetitive and continuous series of beeps starts, then CPU fan stops and looks like it's trying to start again but never does. That's as far as I get. No post.

Now, what I've done to troubleshoot is the following:

I've reduced the configuration to the bare minimum; motherboad is not in the case but sits outside on platform so elimating shorting. Power supply is a Seasonic x750 Gold. All that is installed is the CPU and heatsink (Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo) and power supply.

I have another computer and have changed out the these components, so I think  I can elimate these as I still get the same result, beeping and no post:
Exchanged Lithium battery (same results)
Exchanged power supply (same results, except that with this power supply, the first few times trying to boot I got the same result; after disconnecting and reconnecting, when pressing the power button, the fan would only try to to start and the it would seem I got no power at all to the board )
Exchanged computer case which is supplying power start/power button (same results)
Exchanged cabling (same results)

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before. I 'm starting to feel that it is a power issue, but perhaps on the motherboard itself. I'm getting the beeps so the processor seems to be working.

Thanks if anyone has some ideas.

Hi there,

you will need to use some RAM in the basic configuration to get the PC started and you haven't mentioned that component in your list.

Plus one other thing is that do you have the video power plugs. plugged in too and the right ones too.

Thanks, both, for the help.

I've got 64 GB GSkill Ripjaw 1333 1.5v (9-9-9-24). All matched memory with sequential serial numbers.

I did more experiments last night, putting RAM in one module at a time into different slots; I got post and to bios. Yeah!

Now here's the problem: I can populate Channels B, C, and D and have 48 GB running and post and get into bios. But when I populate RAM into Channel A (either slot), I get the beeping again and the motherboard won't post. This happens whether there is only one module in Channel A with nothing populating the rest of the board, or when the other channels are full or partially full.

In short, if any module goes into Channel A, the beeping occurs and no post. I've switch the RAM around and tried different modules in A, but always the same thing.

So, could this mean that I've got a bad Channel on the motherboard? Channel A is the two memory slots just to the right of the processor, above the southbridge.

Or could there be some timing adjustments I need to make in bios to get all Channels working? Memory is running at stock 1333 according to Bios. I haven't changed anything.

I'm about to MemTest all the memory in the Channels that do work to try and eliminate that at least.

Thanks again for teh help., and anytoher ideas.

What BIOS version are you running?

Latest is F3t which might improve things. You can download it from TweakTown here: http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html.

I look at that bios and what does it fix. It sounds more like the A channel has a short in it. I had the same problem with x58 board one time.

It can take 6 stick of memory and if I put in all 6 sticks it would beep. If I ran 5 sticks it would boot. Then sometimes it would boot with 6 sticks, but only read 7gbs or 8gbs and not the 9gbs installed.

I uploaded a the new bios, but it doesn't change the behavior. Channel A still not accepting Memory.

Are there any memory settings which might cause this? Voltage? 64 GB is a lot to run, but I am running at 1333. I don't know....

No not really because you are running what the board in auto settings. Like I said the slot sound like they are bad on that channel.

Yes, I'm thinking the same thing. All the RAM runs fine under MemTest. It's just those darn, two slots.
