H87N-Wifi with Intel G3258
« on: April 14, 2015, 01:20:39 pm »
Hi All,

I am new to building PC's & am just putting my first unit together based on above board & processor. My question is are these two compatible. I have tried powering up my board & basically fan on CPU cooler spins for a second or so then stops then spins, then stops...etc... and repeats. Tried all sorts of things to boot into BIOS but can't do it. I have disconnected all peripherals & leads & RAM except CPU, Power & 12V to CPU + front panel Power ON/ Reset switches & it still does it.. Its driving me nuts. Only thing I can think of is that the components are not compatible?

.. a little bit more info - I have been measuring voltages on ATX connector & ATX 12V & they all seem to be present but only for a second - then they come back on, off etc... Its like something keeps resetting the PSU. Even the voltage to PS ON/Off (Pin 16) keeps going high & low... Is this a BIOS problem?

Any help greatly appreciated thank you - John

Yes it only shows F7 & F8 bios on their site but there were other bios before those F3. The board might have a old bios version. The thing is it might be CPU, it could be newer than the board.

Try and take the CPU out and try it. Yes it will still boot in a loop but it might be longer. Plus look at the CPU socket to make sure you don't have a bent pin. I'm just ask is the CPU fan plug into the right header. The one next to the battery.

Hi - Thks for that. Yes I have the +12V connected for the CPU. I will try & remove CPU/ fan & booting up & see what happens. I guess I'm in a catch 22 cause I have no way of getting to BIOS to check what version I have etc.. :-( I have already removed the CPU once & gave it a thorough check & couldn't see any damaged pins - the CPU is brand new. My son gave me the mother board (which is about 1 year old) & he has been running it with an i7 with no problems for the last year. Anyway thks for your suggestions. I will try again later.. John

All I do is put your son's i7 back in and boot it up update the bios and than try your CPU.

Sounds good never thought of that... just need to persuade my son that I need to borrow his i7.... :-) I may just get myself a GA - Z97N which I think should be better for the G3258...

Thks a lot for help,  John
