GA Z170X Gaming 5 Freezing

GA Z170X Gaming 5 Freezing
« on: July 13, 2016, 07:44:25 pm »
I have been trying to resolve this issue for several days and I am running out of things to try. First let me list the machine specs:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA Z170X Gaming 5 - BIOS version F5
CPU: Intel i5-6600k (stock clock currently)
RAM: Geil Super Luce 16 GB (4x4) DDR4 3000 (currently at 2133)
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders edition (stock clock)
PSU: Antec HCP-1300
SSD: Crucial MX200 500GB (x2 RAID0)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint 1TB
OS: Windows 10 Pro

I don't have any issues getting the system to boot, but after about an hour and 15 minutes the system will hard freeze and become completely unresponsive. I do not get a BSOD or any error messages in the event viewer, aside from "reboot from improper shutdown."

Open loop watercooling, temps are staying around 35C under full load. While the system is operational I can stress test for the entire time frame or let it sit completely idle, it still freezes at roughly the same time.

When the system freezes the debug code on the mobo is usually D2, with the occasional D4.

Thus far I have removed the SSDs from the system and tried to run on the HDD with the same results. I have removed the GPU and the RAM to ensure that everything is properly seated. I have even gone as far as booting Ubuntu from a USB stick only to have the same behavior.

This is a new build all parts are new with the exception of the PSU that I removed from my old system.

One other issue I have noticed, is no audio from rear I/O ports, but the front panel header is working fine.

Ideas?

Hello,

Are you able to test without the GFX card plugged in and disconnect all the case headers to try the rear audio jacks?
Also the Samsung Spinpoint drive, is it an F3 model?

The Samsung Spinpoint IS an F3 model, is there an issue of some type with them?

Testing without the GFX card in place will be difficult since it is part of the WC loop, but I will see what I can do when I get home from the office.

Had a feeling you might have issues with the loop :)

I stopped using my 500GB F3's a while back due to odd hangs when running in AHCI mode and stuttering when gaming.
This was quite some time ago on different hardware but I believe the issue is due to the drives firmware, I still use them on older hardware without issues. (Got 4 of them)

I don't think the HDD is the issue in this case though. With the drive completely removed and only the SSDs installed, or even booting Ubuntu from USB I still have the same issue. I am going to run it again tonight and watch the mobo temps. I have only watched for issues with the CPU and GPU. I have been thinking about air flow and heat could be getting trapped below the GPU and overheating the PCH?

Heat maybe but then the next time you reboot the problem should occur quicker than 1 hour 15mins?

I pulled everything off of the motherboard with the exception of the bare minimum of items necessary for the machine to run. I pulled the GFX card, all of the case headers for USB and audio, removed the fans from the mobo headers and running them from 4 pin molex adapters, and all except for 1 4GB RAM stick.

Using on-board video, I was able to run stable for 3 hours playing YouTube videos. At that point I shut the system down, and re-installed my GFX card only. It ran through the night while playing YouTube without any issues. Before leaving this morning, I shut everything down and reconnected the audio, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 headers to the mobo. I started it back up before I left for the office and I will check it again when I get home this evening.

Currently running with the Samsung HDD, the GTX 1080, a single 4 GB stick of RAM, and all of the case headers connected. Fans are still direct from the PSU.

Definitely not a heat issue, HWmonitor is reporting 36C as max temp on the CPU, GPU, and one of the mobo sensors. The other mobo temps are between 28-30C.

You guys already know how I feel about these:

SSD: Crucial MX200 500GB (x2 RAID0)  :(

If you return and the system is still stable...  re-introduce these and report please.

Waiting to hear from this user as well.

The machine is crashing whenever there is more than one stick of RAM in the system, The mobo will not recognize any RAM in slot 1, but it will recognize it in any of the other slots, as long as it is only a single stick. It doesn't matter which of the 4 sticks I insert in the board, as long as there is not more than 1 it seems to run ok, as soon as a second stick is added the crashing returns.

At this point there is still no audio coming from the rear I/O even if the system appears to be stable and the board has been RMA'd and I am awaiting its return.

The issues remain even with the Crucial drives out of the system.
