G170X-Gaming-7 BIOS F8 and Fan2
« on: September 12, 2016, 02:33:27 am »
I updated my G170X-Gaming-7's BIOS to F8 yesterday.  Since then I've noticed that it randomly tuns Fan2 up to full speed.  I have all fan profiles except CPU OPT on the silent profile.  It does this even when I'm not doing anything to cause extra heat in the system.

I've have the same M/B and i too have been using the f8 bios since release , now i haven't noticed the fan 2 issue that you mention , my fan 2 is connected to the side fan on my case and only has a top speed of 700 rpm that's because it's a 200mm fan so maybe i o have the issue but its not be noticeable ,,,,,, have you tried resetting your bios, eg clearing the Cmos , if that doesn't work, if i was you i would reflash f8 again and try again .

PS,, are you using Gigabytes SIV app that controls your fans or are your using the inbuilt fan control from within the bios

NJC2,
Yes.  Clear your CMOS and set up from scratch.  Still happening?

Uninstall the Fan Control Utility.  Retest.  Results?  I've heard a lot of people say they've had conflicts between the BIOS Fan control and OS based utility.  Settings getting stuck, loading a profile that they tried and later disabled.

Your issue does sound like it could be related to BIOS since its only one fan and according to you, it did work previously. Fan should be 3-4 pin leads.

Want to confirm the bug, flash to a previous BIOS rev and retest.  Or try another fan with a slower maximum rotational speed like Jason-UK suggests.  All of my case fans are max 700RPM as well, but spin at 400-600RPM typically.

Quick update ,, as i have sparetime on my hands , i decided to install Gigabyte app center and thier software for fan control eg( SIV) at first everything was fine i ran a few test just to make sure all was ok , however after i set custom fan curves and then ran more stress test to ramp up the fans ,this is where things got a bit strange ,at first fan 3 stuck on full speed and i couldn't get it to rejuice , so rebooted , tried again and this time the power to my pump head on the CPU_OPT Header stopped all together and then system alarm sounded with a continuous beep informing me that the pump on my h105 had stopped.

Uninstalled all the Gigabyte Apps and center now, i'm just using normal setting in the bios now for fan control and everything is back to normal , so it well does look like there is some bugs in the gigabyte software conflicting with itself or the bios , i couldn't tell you if this happened with F7 bios as i don't normally use Gigabyte apps/software as i prefer to make all my adjustments from within the bios .

Im saying with the F8 bios for now as my overclocks are stable and the system is running good ,now unless there is further problems arise down the line i will obviously then revert back to F7 bios ..

When I flashed to F8, it cleared the CMOS and I had to set everything up from scratch anyway.

I'm not using a software fan control utility, just the BIOS.

I noticed some odd things that caused the fan to jump to full speed.  It obviously did speed up, as it should, under stress, but with F7 it never went to full speed and temps were fine.  With F8, it will go to full speed and stay there for several minutes after stopping the stress, even though the temps pretty much instantly return to normal idle temps.

The odd things that caused it to go full speed is watching certain types of videos.  I use MPH-HC, and any time I used it to watch a video, fan2 sped up.  If I watched video in Firefox that used a flash based player, fan2 sped up.  What's odd though is that if I watched video in an HTML5 based player it didn't.

I've already gone back to F7 and no longer have the fan issue.  I also noticed that fan2 idled about 100 RPM higher with F8 than it did with F7.
