Problem Flashing Bios On A GA-81845GV-C Revison 1 motherboard
« on: February 01, 2011, 03:43:41 am »
hello all.

I have tried to update the bios on this motherboard many times and all I get is an error that says "Bios file size error. Please Download the 4MB Bios File"

I have seen this error on many websites with many different gigabyte motherboards, but I have yet to find a solution.

I downloaded all 4 bios versions and tried to install them using a dos boot disk, qflash, and @bios and i get the same error message every time. the board is correct, the revision is correct, the bios is correct, everything seems to be in order, but i can't seem to get this working. in all my computer years, this is the first time i have been stumped by a bios.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

Well I must admit that our system doesn't recognise the board number when inserted. :-\

Thanks for the link. This is an old board now isn't it? Not that it means anything if it is still working ok. Why do you want to update the BIOS anyway?

What BIOS version are you running at present ?

I think your BIOS chip on the board is only a small one and not the 4 MB that it is trying to say you need. The BIOS files are all under 400K. The newer BIOS chips are 4 MB.

Is this the correct revision motherboard ?

Have you checked on the side of your board below the slots on the left it should be printed in  white ?

the current bios is f3 and the revision number is 1.0

if you google the error message that i have in my first post, you will see that it has happened to lots of other gigabyte motherboards of differing model numbers, so i know that it's not isolated to this particular board, but it seems to be a gigabyte problem that they don't have an answer for.

You still didn't answer my question on why you wanted to update the BIOS ?

It might be the best course of action to ask GGTS to look into it.

Just enter your email address and click on the language of choice.

the reason i want to update the bios is pretty irrelevant in my case, but if you must know, i have a general rule that all computer equipment that i resell must be fully working and fully updated before i sell it. I've flashed thousands of bios's over the years and never once bricked a motherboard.

the people over at that gigabyte link you posted were pretty useless. i described the problem in detail and all i got from them were generic answers, all of which i had already tried many times and i had posted that in my first email. i guess the term "qualified technician" means that you are trained to read from a generic list of questions. having worked as a phone tech way back when the word technician actually meant something i cannot help but be appalled at the complete lack of anything useful coming from any corporation these days.

as i said in the above posts, this is a problem that spans many different motherboards so it it highly unlikely that so many different people flashed all those thousands of motherboards with the wrong bios as the so called techs claimed.

i appreciate the help though, but i guess i'm gonna have to manually program the bios chips with my burner. would have been easier if they were socketed, but you can't have everything, right?

lol.. cheers. :)

Hey now you are showing your age, most of the peole wouldn't remember when you could just swap out a BIOS chip. ;)

I would also have to agree with the general loss of standards in the support industry nowadays. The trouble is a lot of them don't really know what they are talking about as they don't receive the full amount of training that used to be a requirement. Ah, the good old days.
