GA-P55A-UD4 DDR Channels showing wrong
« on: February 12, 2011, 02:57:25 pm »
Hi guys, I have a small issue with my motherboard. Here are my specs:
CPU: Core i7 870 @ 4.18 Ghz
Board: Ga-P55A-UD4 rev. 2.0
Memory: Mushkin Redline 2x2Gb @ 1900Mhz CAS 8-8-8-22

So, I have the two memory modules in DDR slot 1 and 3 (the white ones), just like it's supposed to be for Dual Channel. The thing is, in BIOS under current status (see the pic attached, at the bottom) it shows like dual channel A and B are running, even though there is no memory module in channel B slots. That confuses the timings I see in windows (Cpu Z shows timings I set for channel A, while Sandra shows some mixture of both). My system is overclocked but I have tried loading the opimized defaults and its the same deal. When I take one module out, it only shows channel A under current status. I have no idea how to fix this at all. Any help would be appreciated.

And one more quick question. I have my vcore set at 1.381 (1.376 effective) and when I stress test with prime the vcore goes up to 1.392 (instead of vdrop i guess i get a v... er.. raise?). Is there anything wrong with that or is it ok?

Thank you,

J

Hi

I don't understand the problem you have. You are running Dual Channel memory and it is showing it as Dual Channels in the BIOS. You have one stick inserted in DDR3_1(channel A) and one inserted in DDR3_3 (channel B).

Hi, thank you for a quick response. The way I see it in the manual, Channel A is DDR3 slot 1 and 3 while Channel B is DDR3 slots 2 and 4. There are supposed to be two dual channels using 4 sticks and 1 dual channel using 2 sticks, or am I understanding this wrong? Because if that is meant the way you said it, there is no place to show for the 3rd and 4th memory module.

Thank you,

J

No I am afraid you have misunderstood the way it works. Chgannel A is DDR3_1 and DDR3_2 Channel B is DDR3_3 and DDR3_4 that is why by filling DDR3_1 and DDR3_3 you are enabling Dual Channel mode which is faster then Single Channel mode.

If you then filll the two remaining slots they just add to the total memory in each channel. If you check in your screenshot you will see that 2 and 4 are empty.

I would however advise running Memtest86+ on these modules and checking they are both working correctly as they has different SPDs according to your screengrab. If you notice the timings are not the same. I take it that you did purchase them as a matching kit?

OK, I totally misunderstood what this was. I enter the timings manually, I have already synchronized them so everything is matching now, memtest passed as well. Thank you for clearing this up for me.
Any ideas on the voltage thing?

Thank you,

J

You are very welcome and it is nice to be of help.

As for the voltage thing...no not really. I cannot explain why it should do this but as long as it is stable I wouldn't worry too much and someone might be able to help you with that answer.
