GA-890GPA-UD3H rev 2.0
« on: May 15, 2011, 04:56:28 pm »
Hi all.

From August 2010 I'm the owner of this mainboard, with latest bios revision installed, and I'm wondering how to make a boot from a USB pendrive with a live edition of Ubuntu.
At system power up I press the F12 key and a list of devices is displayed (CD-ROM, USB CD-ROM, USB floppy, USB hard disk and other stuffs) but no one of them permit me to boot the live distribution from the pendrive.
Other PCs have this feature; maybe I'm making some mistake.
How can I do to make a boot from pendrive?

Thanks for your precious help.

Hi there,
I have used various Gigabyte motherboards and can BOOT and install various Linux distros without problem from the USB Stick. You might want to use this: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ to create a Bootable pendrive. Download the latest Disk Image from Ubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download (I use the 64 bit version on my own AMD system but the 32 bit will work just as well)

Once you have created the install drive using the Universal Installer shut down the PC and plug the USB stick into one of the USB2 ports (don't try using the USB3 ones).
Restart the PC and press F12 to get to the BOOT menu. You need to choose the USB-HDD option to access the pendrive.
Apart from keyboard and mouse do not have any other devices plugged into the USB ports. Although this is not essential it does help eliminate any issues.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

I already used the Universal USB Installer to create the bootable USB stick, and this works in several PCs and laptop but not on my PC. This is reallly strange.
Please just tell me if I can use the USB ports in the front of the case or if I must use one of the rear ports (not USB3 of course).

You should be able to use any of the USB ports if they are connected correctly.
If you are having a problem with the front USB ports try using one of those on the back.

You have checked that your BIOS settings are OK and that all of the USB settings are set to enabled?

EDIT: OK, that's interesting, I just tried a different version of Ubuntu on my USB Stick and it won't work. I get the BOOT Screen OK but then it just loops and won't actually go any further. More research needed I guess.
What version of Ubuntu are you trying to use?

UPDATE: I just burnt the image I tried on the USB drive and that wouldn't run, to a disk and although it would allow me to install it onto a HDD I couldn't run it as a live trial.
So next question: Is the version you have downloaded capable of a live install? (ie will it run without installing to a HDD?)

I think settings are ok.
The Ubuntu release is the latest available via the official site and can be used either on a boot CD/DVD and on a pendrive.

Can you try a different Pendrive?

There have been some issues for other users when it comes to using pendrives for booting or when using QFlash. I know it shouldn't make a difference but it sometimes can.

Another thing to try would be to download the Ubuntu Disk Image again as the download may have been corrupted slightly.

Try different ports, try different stick.......sometimes works, ... the PC god works in mysterious ways!
