Problem with 880GM-UD2H motherboard

Hey all basically I had an issue with my motherboard a few months back where it stopped detecting my disk drives. I assumed it was a faulty motherboard and it was replaced. Now I just fitted this new motherboard today it's the same model as the previous one and it worked fine. Anyways on post it has been asking me "sata has been running in IDE mode, press y to change to ahci mode or n to continue running in IDE. Ive always selected no but accidental pressed Y this time and ended up with the same issue I originally had when I had to return my motherboard. Anyways I went back into bio to restore the original settings. It now detects my disk drives during post but then goes to a blank screen with a flashing underscore but won't go any further.

Can anyone help me out here, ive tested all the hardware in other machines so I know that isnt the problem. Thank you.

Hi there,

If you originally installed your OS in IDE Mode then you can't just switch to AHCI mode, which is what you have accidentally done by hitting the "Y" key during BOOT.

The best thing to do would be to clear CMOS properly to get back to the motherboard's default settings. Dark MAntis goes through the process in this thread: http://forum.giga-byte.co.uk/index.php/topic,5621.msg45368.html#msg45368 if you're not sure how to go about it.

Hi

Absic is absolutely correct in his diagnosis of the problem and I would suggest a clean install of your operating system when you have done as he advises but this time select AHCI mode in the BIOS first. This will give you better performance as well.

Still having problems guys, I can only get either the harddrive detected in post or optical drive, not both at the same time. Someone recommended flashing the bios? Is this an option I should try?

A BIOS update may well help your problem if it is a known fault but yours doesn't really sound like it is that type of thing. It wouldn't hurt though and if the BIOS has been corrupted it would fix that. Make sure that you use QFlash for the update.

You don't say which revision your motherboard is but if it is rev 1.0 or 1.3 then the F8 BIOS updates the AHCI ROM which could well help.

Its 1.4, but I cant even flash it anyway, i the only drive see an option to flah from in q flash is a floppy drive and I dont even have one of them. Any suggestions please guys?

as you have the 1.4 revision you can forget about updating BIOS at the moment as your board has the only available version which is F8.

Did you actually do the extended clear CMOS that I suggested earlier? If you did then it might be a good idea to try it again but leave the motherboard battery out for a bit longer.

Another thing to try would be to build the PC outside of the case, just to make sure you haven't got a short occurring somewhere. thank you, yeah I left the battery out all day last time. Ive taken it out again, the only thing I think I could have done wrong was leave the power supply unplugged? Should I have plugged it back in once ive taken it out?

No leave everything disconnected until you put the motherboard battery back in.

If still no joy, try the next step I suggested, building the PC outside of the case, just to eliminate the possibility of an electrical short.
