GA-870A-USB3 rev 3.0 usb3 issues
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:17:04 pm »
Having issues with this motherboard recognizing usb 3.0 hard drives (eagle tech 2TB and hitachi 3TB). Sometimes it will recognize them, sometimes it won't. I tried underclocking the memory from DDR3 1600 to DDR3 1333 and it seemed to work until I swapped out the drives and then they would power on but not be recognized again. As far as I know, I'm running the latest bios and updated the usb 3.0 drivers (eltron) with little avail. Weird part, if I plug these drives in the usb 2.0 slots they work fine...Specs for our backup server:
Phenom 2 X6 3.3ghz (not overclocked)
Seagate Barracuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB 5900 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" (currently have it partitioned into 700 gigs)
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M700 RS-700-AMBA-D3 700W ATX12V V2.3 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Geforce 8200 GT video card
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Update:
Now when I do get em to work, I get an I/O read error, whats up with this?

Hi and welcome.

What happens if you remove the 3 TB drive from the equation ? If you haven't tried it I would suggest finding out now.

Ok, I did figure out the I/O read errors (had to format in exfat, windows 7 backup doesn't like sector sizes above 4,000 bytes). However, even when I put in the other drive (2 tb eagle) its not recognized in the usb 3.0 slot. Weird thing is, I have put these 3 tb usb 3 drives on another machine and presto they are instantly recognized in the usb 3.0 slot. With that being said, I'm beginning to think its either a driver issue or something else. As I have stated before, I did update the usb 3.0 drivers to the latest ones as this was still happening when I was using the default usb 3.0 drivers that came with the motherboard.
Update: Something else was a little off, when I tried to do a copy from one drive to the other (both 3 tb) the other drive would drop its connection and was still flashing when I came into work this morning.

Have you got the 3TB drive formatted with GPT ?

Not even sure on how to do that, I don't see the option in windows 7 computer management in order to do so. But it doesn't solve the issue with the 2 tb drives not being recognized in the usb 3.0 ports.

If it is not formatted as GPT instead of NTFS any drive over 2TB can't be seen by Windows. GPT has to be enabled in the BIOS and then the drive formatted with it to work.

The issue with the other drives not being seen is probably a driver issue or a conflict with the power management settings. Try disabling all the  BIOS power savings modes like C1E, EIST, C3, C6 and the sleep modes S1and so on. It might even be worth disabling the settings in Windows too.

Ok, I got it reformatted in gpt, but I still get an I/O error when doing a windows backup.

Have you also followed my suggestion to disable all the power saving modes as well now ?

Yes I disabled all the power saving features, it installs as an unknown device. Also, I still getting I/O read errors when doing a image backup through windows 7. I know these drives work when I plug them into usb 2.0 slots on this machine and I know that they work when I plug them into a biostar motherboard that has usb 3.0 slots. I even tried reinstalling the usb 3.0 driver on the backup server and it still wouldn't recognize the other drive (but it will recognize the 3 tb hitachi just fine). Not sure what else I could do at this point...

Try completely removing the original drivers for the USB3.0 (use something like driversweeper). It is important they are completely gone and then install the latest versions. Also try disabling ESATA if you don't use it.

Tried that, didn't get me anywhere still getting the I/O read errors. From what research I have done, its something to do with the micron controller on the external drive and the etron drivers that are causing the conflict.
