GA-X58A-UD3R not POSTING
« on: October 31, 2011, 05:18:05 pm »
Hi, This is my first post and I need help.
My MB refuses to POST and emits a series of short beeps and the DDR and NB lights are all on.  I have changed out the MB with another UDR3 and I have the same problem.

I know that all signs point to a bad PSU but I have checked the voltages with the paper clip test and also with the power plugs attached with a probe that I use to make contact through the wire side of the connector.

My question is: Is there a timing protocol that the board uses to look at the Power Good signal?  In other words does this signal have to appear withing an alloted time frame for the board to POST?  The voltage is there but I cannot test the timing.  Please help

Hi and welcome.

The first thing to try is to clear the CMOS. Please follow these instructions exactly!

Remove the power cable from the mains supply and then press the power switch on the case for a few seconds just to drain any residual energy in the PSU capacitors.

Once done remove the motherboard battery for at least one hour before replacing it.

Next plug back into the mains supply and boot.

You will now need to enter the BIOS by pressing DEL and load Optimised BIOS Defaults.

Make any other changes to the BIOS settings to suit your self like disabling the floppy drive, disabling the full screen logo and making the HDD the primary boot device and then press F10 to save and exit.

What PSU are you currently using and how old is it ?

A list of your hardware would be a help too.

Although you may think beside the point .... computer PSUs are a regulated power supply ...... with no load , half load or full load.....the 12V rail will show 12V......unless you have some pretty fancy paper clips and ohmmeter.....you want be able to test the PSU at home!

Follow DMs advice because this is the correct procedure/fault find ..... but don't rule out the PSU

you also need to let us know what the "Beep" code was......long, short, how many and what order!

Thanks for the replies. This is my system:
e
 GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R Motherboard

GIGABYTE GV-R577UD-1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

 CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V v2.2

 Intel Core i7-930

2 G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

2  SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM

All items were purchased about a year ago and everything ran perfectly right out of the gate until about a week ago.  The beeps are very short and rapid, running for about 3 or 4 sec, short pause and repeat.  The owner's manual says a long string of rapid beeps is a power issue.
I have tried clearing the CMOS like Dark Mantis describes but no luck.

LATEST DEVELOPMENT
Now the machine will not turn on at all. It power up fo about 1/2 sec. and shuts off and then repeats until I switch the PSU off.
Paper clip test still checks out.
I am at a loss.  Help!

Most logical is the PSU.....can you get your hands on one for testing from a mate or where ever......The PSU you purchased last year will still have substantial warranty left, but we need to confirm it is in fact the PSU.

It still could be other items but to move forward, .... need a PSU!

Yes I would gop along with Allan here. It certainly sounds like a duff power supply.

You haven't been working on the system prior to the problem have you ? Just wondering if there could be a short direct to earth via the chassis.
