GA-970A-UD3 sata ports 4 & 5 seen in bios but windows 7 will not see them...

Hi all.   I hope someone can help.   I have a GA-970A-UD3.

Sata ports 0-1-2 all have hard drives.
Sata port 3 has a DVD1 on it
Sata ports 4 & 5 have another DVD2 and a blu-ray on it

The bios boots and sees them all.  But windows 7 will only see what is on ports 0-3.  Nothing on 4 or 5 will be seen.
I even unplugged the blu ray and moved to the port 3 and it is now seen and DVD1 what was on port 3 is moved to 4 or 5 and nothing.
I have tried everything.  Anyone have any advice at all?   Thanks.

Mark

  • If it s not broken, fix it until it is !
So there is none of them in the Device Manager whatsoever ?!

Make sure you are using latest BIOS (F8a for versions 1.x).
Switch to AHCI and see what happens or if it s AHCI now switch to IDE Mode.
Try different SATA cables as well.

I have encountered performance issues with those 2 ports myself with the same board version 1.0 and stopped using them , but they were working with XP.W7 and some Linux distroes. They were working in multiword  instead of UltraDMA

Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150

Thanks for the response.  So to answer your questions:

So there is none of them in the Device Manager whatsoever ?!
This is correct.   I have my Blu-ray in the device manager and I am missing DVD1 and DVD2.
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers show with AHCI running as:

AMD PCI IDE Controller
ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1
ATA Channel 2
ATA Channel 3
Standard AHCI1.0 Serial ATA Controler

Make sure you are using latest BIOS (F8a for versions 1.x).
I have not upgraded the bios yet.  I will try that.  The bios updater says I am at the latest at F7 so I thought that I was already at the latest.  looks like that's wrong.  Thanks.

Switch to AHCI and see what happens or if it s AHCI now switch to IDE Mode.
I switched to AHCI and made port 4 and 5 as IDE.  Same thing.  system boots.  Nothing shows.  I will restart and change back to report.
OK I changed back to IDE and restarted.   Still nothing on port 4 and 5.
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers show now with no AHCI running as:

AMD PCI IDE Controller
AMD SATA Controller(Native IDE Mode)
ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1

Try different SATA cables as well.
I tried several including the ones that were working on the other ports.  No luck.

OK now running F8a and no changes.  Still cannot see anything on ports 4 or 5.
Maybe just a bad motherboard?

Also perhaps it matters but this is a brand new system I am building and I went with a 450w power supply.  Don't thank that matters, but I wanted to mention it.

any other ideas at all?

Thanks.

Try once more with a HDD and then if nothing RMA the motherboard.
You haven t mentioned testing the ports with HDD-s.

Do a Clear CMOS if you haven t already.
I would also test again with the board out of the case before RMA-ing.

Report the problem to Gigabyte as well maybe it s a compatibility issue.
The BIOS on this board is far from perfect in many aspects ,maybe version 3.0 is better made.

ok I tried with my hard drive and it didn't show up.

I believe the cmos should of been cleared on the upgrade of the latest bios I assume?
But I can try that.

I'll have to take some work to pull it out of the case to try that last suggestion.  Otherwise I submitted a request for an RMA.

Any thoughts if a power supply might not be enough power at 450W?

Thanks again.

ok I took a new drive and installed a brand new copy of windows 7 and all 6 drives showed up.  So it seemed to have been an issue with putting a new MB in with the already installed Win7 that was the culprit.  Blame it all on Microsoft!    Thanks for the help.
