Hard drives do not show up on SATA ports 0 and 1

Hello All,

I wondered if you could solve this one for me? I have a GA-790FXTA mobo with one hard drive connected to the 0 SATA port and the other to the 1 SATA port. In the BIOS I have the drives set to IDE but when I boot the PC up it does show the drives belonging to those ports instead SATA 2 port is displayed controlling the HDD.

I did have it set to a RAID configuration a good while back but I'm sure I corrected those settings for an IDE setup.

I am not sure that I understood correctly but it can be confusing the way Gigabyte's BIOSes report the location of drives. Is there any reason why you are concerned about this ?

Hello DM,

No I just wondered, having read another post about a GA-890FX-U5 build, I noticed from his screenshots that IDE channel's 0 & 1 were stating that HDD was recognised. I just wanted to have mine reading the same, but could it  because they are eSATA? I have asked a few questions of late, but if you don't ask you don't know.


While your here, I was thinking of upgrading to the GA-890GPA-UD3H is this a good board or should I wait for the 990FX chipset instead?

I am not the best person to ask about AMD advice as I run the Intel side but i am sure absic or somebody else can help you. As for the "do I buy now or wait for the bigger and better" perrenial question it is a case of priorities. If you can wait then I would suggest that you do so but by the sound of things Bulldozer has been put back to a September launch so it might be a while yet.

Yes I can wait, I've noticed with a BIOS update AM3+ cpu's can be used on that mobo. I've also read that AMD have put back the launch date also, I'm sure it will be worth the wait.

Ah the mysteries of how BIOS reports the HDD's is something that greater minds than my own have yet to get to grips with. You would not believe the time I have spent playing around with various set-ups, trying to figure this particular conundrum out. Basically it all depends on how you configure your system. HDD's seem to be reportedly differently if you set the controller(s) to IDE, AHCI or RAID modes. I have even had HDD's apparently jump from one SATA port to another one without changing anything!  I gave up trying to figure this one out and have just accepted the fact that everything works even if there is no real logic to it.

The choice of motherboards is really one of personal choice and also of your budget. The fact that the "Bulldozer" processors are going to be released a little later than anyone anticipated makes the decision to switch a little more complex. Personally I am going to get one of the new 9 Series boards when they come along and play with it until the new chips come out, whenever that may be. Then I can just drop in a new processor, after updating the BIOS of course. This will give me time to iron out any little gremlins that come along and also to give me a better idea of how the new processor work. There's nothing like a comparison test and this is a great opportunity to do just that.
