OK I want to install two sata ssd drives one is a ssd  sataIII for the primary drive for the opperating system and the other is a sataII ssd drive. I would like to get them into an raid configuration useing the XHD or the extrem hard drive utility on the mother board ,can i get your thoughts on this? If this works like the ram principal then the slower ssd will pull the faster down to the slower speed. How would you set this up on your board?

SSDs are still relatively new tech....pull raid into the equation and there's just so much (little) information out there

 Hay Benney boy............First off..........Go for it  8)

Yes,... I would say the slowest drive would be the master speed in theory!........But I've never tried 2 dissimilar SSD units under any Raid

It might work!, but then again :-\  We all know from experience that using  drives of a dissimilar nature can cause problem immediately or even weeks down the line.........the biggest problems can be found with drives (Magnetic Platter HDD) with different speeds (RPM)

How this carries through to SSDs is anybody's guess!....All you can do is "suck it and see"

To have the best chance I would put them on the Intel ICH10 controller and just try to load widows after doing the Ctrl+I raid config and set your Bios to ACHI and see if windows will load..... Trim wont work under raid so you'll have to read up on Garbage collection and install/configure accordingly.

Good luck "Jim" on your mission and let us know how it went , ... will be interested myself as to what drives you use and what ATTO benches you can get out of them if you get this far

Hi

By all means try and I would be interested in the outcome but I think you will be very lucky if you can get it to work. Even when RAIDing ordinary magnetic hard drives normally you are advise to use two or more similar drives.  The only time yopu can forget this is if you are using the JBOD RAID array when anything will go.

Well I have been looking into this and I think it will not work For several reasons the gigabite instructions do say to use the same sata number or similar drives that are equal in size and speed. I thought i would put this out there to see if someone had a plan to make this work without risk. My alternat plan is to use the sataIII for the primary drive and the sataII for a storage drive But i Think I will sacrifice speed since i cant use the extreme hard drive feature that comes with the mother board. of course i can go purchas another sata III at 178 bucks more thanks for the imput .regards benney .

You are welcome benney as often it is good to just throw a few ideas around and see what happens. Sometimes it can pay off and others it just saves us a lot of wasted money and time. ;)
