GA-Z77-D3H Works OK, but can't find HDD

GA-Z77-D3H  Rev 1.1 Bios-F18
i5-3570K
16G-RAM 4x4G Kit Corsair-Vengence CMZ16GX3M4X2133 (from QVL list)
750W PC Power & Cooling Silencer MkII
Integrated graphics for now
Hitachi HDS721050CLA362 500GB SATA 3G/S (from old XP system)
Win 7 PRO-64 OEM

New build; used Win 7 Pro install disk to repartition and reformat the entire drive into 3 new partitions.  Windows installed & is working fine.  I used mobo CD to install  drivers.  Having a clean build I next tried to save an image.

Three Paragon Backup tools can't find the HDD (B&R9_Paid, B&R11_Compact, B&R12-free).
Windows 7 backup image burns a file less than 1Meg in size.

Anyone have a backup utility that works good burning HD images using this motherboard?  Can't afford to buy Ghost or ... only to find out it doesn't work either.

Possible related oddities:
Beeps during reboot

I can't set boot sequence to boot from CD first as setup menu gives a "Boot Override" warning.

Once immediately after a reboot I had a black-screen showing "Invalid Partition Table", rebooted again & haven't seen it since.  Maybe 50 reboots ago.  System appears to work fine.  Win 7 shows the HD when using Windows Explorer and also the Disk Management menu.

Express Recovery 2 failed to install from cd citing C++ install error

thanks for any advice.
