Question on SSD for the GA-890FXA-UD5 mobo
« on: June 10, 2011, 03:26:55 pm »
My mobo is the GA-890FXA-UD5. To install a SSD drive do I need to configure anything in the Bios? I am currently using a SATA drive. This is the SSD drive I am thinking of purchasing.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167050   I use this PC to develop with the UT 3 UDK tools, graphics, and game on it.

Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
System Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
System Model: GA-890FXA-UD5
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor (6 CPUs), ~3.2GHz
Memory: 16 GB of RAM

Hi there,

the only thing you need to check in BIOS is that the SATA controller you are using is set for AHCI. You can install the OS using the standard Microsoft AHCI drivers and then update to the AMD version once the OS is installed. This is easier than either using F6 during the install or slipstreaming the drivers into a Windows Install disk.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Also, you might want to check that at startup, your BIOS is configured as follows:

BIOS->Advanced BIOS Features->Hard Disk Boot Priority->Set SSD to first boot device
Fractal Design Define
Ryzen 3700x 3.6GHz CPU
Aorus Elite x570 motherboard
Bios v.F20
Crucial Ballistix BL2K8G36C16U4B 3600 MHz, DDR4
Sapphire Nitro 5700 XT 8GB GDDR5 PCIE graphics card
Xigmatek 700W NRP-PC70 power suupp

I'm doing the same for mine except I have the GA-970A-D3. When I open my Hard Disk Boot Priority the only thing listed (with no other choice options) is Bootable Add-in Cards. Is this the SSD? Thanks

Unless you provide details of your system specification, I can't answer you.

The Hard Disk Boot Priority for a personal can usually be configured so that your PC boots up from devices such as a hard disk (e.g an SSD), an opitical drive (such as a CD or DVD-RW Drive) or memory stick. If you have a PC, it should automatically detect one or more of these devices ("plug and play").

When you mention "Bootable Add-in Cards", I suspect that you are trying to get a server to boot up. Is that what you are trying to do?

Do these changes need to be done before win7 is installed or can it be done afterwards.  Thanks

before unless you want to use a registry hack to make the changes after and the best speed is always if you do it before.
