Gigabyte K8 nForce4 Ultra-9 strange strange issue
« on: January 21, 2010, 05:51:20 pm »
Hi there,

Im having issues with my MB, from a day to another the board turns on when it wants to, its really strange.

Its all connected properly i checked everything, i took all out and back in again, cleaned everything, the cpu, rams, video card, psu, are all working well. The thing that when im trying to power up with the case buttom it just stays off, sometimes it gets on immediately like it should and sometimes took about 30 seconds or even a minute to just power up.

I flashed the bios again to make sure of that wasnt a problem. Its like the PSU is delivering the energy with delay, i dont know. Sometimes it just wont turn on at all.

The only thing i have not changed is the board battery that has about 4 years in there. I want to buy a new case for this computer of mine that is my software test machine but with this kind of issue i guess i will need a new board.

As far as i checked on the board itself there are no signs of damage or electrical failures, but who knows, im not an expert.

Anybody has any idea what could it be ?.

I will really really appreciate any help, i dont want to lose this computer.

Greetings to everyone.

hi,
A cmos battery change would be a good idea,
Is your case power switch faulty?
Did you load default settings in the bios after flashing,
Try another psu if you can,
cheers

ok, i think im going to do the battery change.

about the case power button its working fine, i tested it with my other computer and its just fine.

i tried before with another PSU, but the problem is still there.

could really a battery change or fix this kind of issues ?, i thought that a board battery just helps to keep the bios chip powered, but i guess im totally wrong.

Hi
Also check your bios default enabled after updating bios, power off and enter correct cpu memory settings,
A flat battery may not be saving the bios settings on update,
Could the mobo be on it's last legs?
Cheers

hi there,

ive changed the board battery and the problem really doesnt seem to get healed.

at least the board is starting more often now and sometimes starts when i want to, the problem is really strange though, never happend something like that to me before, its been 7 years since i started to make my own computers and never had a similar problem.

yesterday after the battery changed i installed windows 7 on the computer with all the drivers and stuff and it worked without problems so far, the nvidia network is dead, i tested it and re tested and its totally dead ( yes is activated on bios ).

it is fair enough to keep the board and still use the computer ? or just buy a new one ?

Hi,
Yeah reckon on getting as much from pc kit as possible,
If it does what you want it too,
why not see if you can get it repaired by gigabyte with an RMA if it's after 2003 I think warrantee for mobos after that date are 6 years!, read the bumf in RMA motherboards section?
Worth a shot will cost you £10 P/P
Lets know how you get on
Cheers
You could also fit a pci network card!

Really about those 6 years ?, this is what the warranty policy says:

Motherboards
o   All motherboards (besides Micro ITX) carry a 3 year warranty.
Micro ITX motherboards carry only 15 months limited warranty.

Can you give me the link where it says those 6 years ? It would be really useful because this board doesnt have more than 6 years.

Thank you very much.

Hi,
My bad, twas 6 years from 2003 -2009 = 6years, Doh, slapped my legs with damp sponge,
It is 3 years, But it may be worth asking for a repair all the same,
I have had to contact them for RMA and they were great and almost fell over backwards to help, 10 stars,
Heres the link in forum to motherboard warrantee,.
