GA-990XA-UD3 Rev 1.0 work with FX-8350 Vishera CPU?
« on: February 24, 2013, 08:09:46 pm »
Wondering if anyone has successfully put an FX-8350 in a GA-990XA-UD3 (not FXA) Rev 1.0.     Current  BIOS  is F3.
I was an early adopter of this motherboard and have been using a Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition since 6/22/2011, and I'm very happy with the setup.  Now, I'm considering upgrading to the FX-8350 CPU, getting a good aftermarket heatsink/cooler and overclocking some; but seems like I have read of problems with this combination, especially with the Rev 1.0.     I know I will have to upgrade to BIOS F13 and have heard that it is not a good idea to go from F3 to F13 in one swoop, but to upgrade incrementally....   F3 to F5,  F5 to F8,  ..etc. to F13.
Would appreciate any comments on this.  Thanks!    Mark

Maybe I didn't give enough info on my setup, or maybe you all are busy watching the Oscars.
I live in Kalamazoo, Michigan and it's 4:36 PM.
I have Win 7 Ult (x64)  SP 1; 4 SATA hard drives; 4 GB G. Skill ripjaws 1600 memory; NVIDIA GeForce 210 video card; 2 PCI M-Audio audio cards (Omni 66 and Delta 1010); Intel Gigabit CT LAN card because the onboard LAN was conflicting with something (per my 22 year old son) and dropping my cable internet connection all the time; UBS wired mouse; PS/2 keyboard.
I know you are not watching the Oscars but I just got antsy sitting here with no one paying attention to me.

Does the 990XA-UD3 (Rev. 1.0) not work with FX-8350?

Thanks Vezina!
Could you possibly help me with the question about upgrading the BIOS?
I'm at F3.  Can I go directly to F13, or do I have to go up incrementally( F3 to F5,  F5 to F8,  ..etc. to F13.)?

You should be able to update directly ,unless they say otherwise in the BIOS download page.
I am a owner of a 970-UD3 and i have updated randomly ,i ve had no issues.

Before updating reset/clear CMOS manually and do the same after the update.Q-Flash should work flawlessly.

Got it. Thanks for the tips.
Think I'll wait until I get the 8350; then clear CMOS,  Q-Flash the F13 BIOS, clear CMOS and off we go.
Probably best not to mess with the BIOS until I've got the part. since my computer is running great now.

Glad to hear yours is working well makisst. Do you have rev 1.0? Are you overclocking the FX-8350?  According to the Gigabyte site (www.gigabyte.us) here in the states, the CPU Support List recommends BIOS F13, so it surprises me that F10b works for you.

I've been reading recently, mostly at overclock .net, that there are issues with overclocking the Rev 1.0 boards. They don't have LLC (Load Line Control), like Revs. 1.1 thru 1.3 do. The way I understand it, without LLC the CPU overvolts by .1v and can't pick up the right RAM speed, timings or voltage. One person said that "the 990XA-UD3 Rev 1.0 has vboost by default - so 1.47 v increases to nearly 1.6 v under stress "  ( like Prime 95 under blend mode for several hours/or overnight). I'm a Noob but, apparently the lack of LLC can result in v droop, v drop and /or v offset.  The same guy is very angry with Gigabyte, that they would make such a significant change in the board, that appears  should have been there in the first place. Giga suggested that he buy one of the new boards so his computer would run correctly......basically saying " touch luck kid".  Apparently its the same with the Rev 1.0 of the Gigabyte  990FX boards too.

As I understand it, Asus and ASRock had this LLC support from the beginning.  Since I don't have an FX-8350 yet I can't  test these suppositions regarding overclocking the 8350, and I don't want to buy one unless I can successfully overclock it somewhat, at least up to 4.5 GHz and hopefully up to 5.0GHz?

Anybody experienced any of these issues, and if so have they had a significant effect on overclocking FX-8350?

Versions 1.0 of the 9xx series boards don t have the LLC setting available , but the voltage control is done at hardware level.
You can overclock in a specific amount on them.
Practically the board uses one of the LLC presets.
If the voltage is to high in load with version 1.0 you can very well drop the voltage by 0,05 or more.
Furthermore overclocking is limited by the current limiters they put in newer BIOS-es to avoid fire.
So with or without LLC you will be limited.
You can overclock moderately on this boards.

But the top shelf CPU is not the best candidate though. You could get some FX 6300 or a FX 8320 and overclock it.
