CPU fan not functioning when GTX 650Ti graphics card inserted

Hi all

My first post here so hope you can assist.

I have a Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V ver 2.0 and have just bought the Gigabyte Geforce GTX 650 Ti off Amazon (arrived yesterday!) and after installing fairly seamlessly I noticed that my CPU fan stopped working - it just clicks round a few degrees every 10 secs or so. My previous GPU is the onboard Intel HD 4000 whichauto recognises when another GPU is inserted.

I tried a game briefly with the new card (before noticing the CPU fan) which works really well but then starts to slow up and have problems so quickly stopped that and shut down.

I removed the card, reconnected my monitor to the mobo onboard GPU and everything works fine again.

Ive tried overriding CPU fan speed control in BIOS which overrides it on the onboard GPU but no change on the GTX.

If I put CPU fan failure alarm on in BIOS this is set off if I put the new GTX in and power up.

Ive disabled auto detect external GPU in BIOS to just use external GPU - same problem.

If I leave the GTX card in, unplug power to it and connect monitor back to motherboards intyernal GPU all works as normal.

Ive checked for BIOS update and had some hope as there was a new BIOS F5 with upgraded support for PCIEx16 Graphics cards - flashed over okay but alas no change with the CPU fan issue.

The card is seated correctly in the PCIx16 slot and has its own PCIe power supply (only one PSU socket on this card). My PSU is a CoreXstream 500W PSU so should be okay I would have thought. CPU fan only needs about 0.28A and the problem occurs even before the graphics card is under any load

Other bits not sure if relevant -
Windows 7 64 bit
 Intel i7 3770 CPU
 8BG RAM
 Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-H61MA-D3V
Graphics Card GV-N65TOC-2GI  Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 Ti 2GB

Any ideas would really be appreciated  ???  I would have thought with both products being Gigabyte this should have been a no brainer ??

What power supply do you have? The newer cards do suck up a lot of power.

Its a CoreXstream 500W PSU - the graphics card when  passive only draws about 80w and the CPU fan is being affected straight away (before even windows has loaded) so no real graphical draw on it - the CPU fan works all the time when Im using the internal GPU.

The thing is it is a dual rail PSU, That is what are the amps on ea rail 18 & 19. Amps come in as a bigger factor on this than watts.

Geforce GTX 650ti - 20A and a 400W PSU minimum

If you do buy a better PSU get a single +12v rail PSU.

One test that you can try is disconnect everything off of the PSU and just have the MB & video card with power.

Thanks for the info dmdilks !

It still seems strange as I see the recommended power requirement is 20A / 400W but I would have thought that this accomodates full loading but Im only looking at the card effectively in a passive mode and it still causes a problem - Ill try the removal of all the other items to see if that helps - I presume I can remove the power to the hard drive, DVD writer and remove the wifi card - should that be enough?

Yes that should do it. The fans draw about 3.5w & 0.33a each.

Okay so I removed the power connectors for the case fan, hard drive and DVD rewriter (left the wifi card attached but that is PCI and doest have its own supply so thought that should be okay) but still no change  :-\
I made sure in the BIOS that the internal GPU was disabled.  Just to note that my processor fan normally comes on just before the POST beep on boot up - I dont know if that says anything about the problem or not?

As a final test I got an ATI Radeon HD 3800 Series card out of another machine and put that in the same slot, attached the power and the fan came on just before the POST beep as normal.  Attached all the peripherals and it still came on as normal .... this is really bending my noodle!!

Im starting to think there is a compatibility issue between mobo and card even though both are Gigabyte but this seems pretty unlikely.

I have posted the problem to gigabyte technical support but have waited three days for a reply now - any ideas how long they normally take?  :(

Sometimes you will have to sit and wait for them. It has been a long time since I have dealt with them.

One other thing have you tried that video card in another computer?

Geforce GTX 650 - 20A and a 400W PSU minimum

Radeon X38xx series - 28A and a 450W PSU minimum

It is sounding more like a video card problem than the mother board. You could have a bad card.

Good idea - that is next on my list of things to try over the weekend - the other PC isnt PCIe 16 but there is a chance it may also malfunction the CPU fan which would point at the card.

UPDATE: Ive tried the card on my other PC (300W PSU) and it doesnt affect the CPU fan - seems to work fine in that respect.

I think this points to an incompatibility issue between m/b and graphics card or setting issue on m/b.

Do you think it would help if I cleared the CMOS on the motherboard, restarted PC and reset BIOS to defaults, disabled onboard card and then inserted the GTX card? In doing this would I need to reflash my BIOS to latest version again or is that still held somewhere on the m/board?

What bios do you have on the board. Because the F5 does Improve PCIEx16 graphic card compatibility.

If that doesn't work than you just have a bum board like almost half of the people that have that board.

Over on Newegg.com they give it 3 out 5 eggs. 19 out of 49 people are having some kind of problem with it.

I have flashed to F5 but this didnt alter the problem unfortunately.
