windows 7 compatibility
« on: March 09, 2013, 09:00:12 pm »
hi folks!
i have just upgraded an old ga-570sli s4 from 5600+ to athlon ii x4 640...running quiet an cool at 3.6ghz
on windows xp. i have a retail copy of windows 7 home and have tried to load it on a clean drive but
getting bluescreen and 5c error. gigabyte don't seem to provide a win7 chipset driver for this board, but
googling around it appears that win7 (64-bit by the way) should provide one.
am i looking at a new dvd drive? or am i missing something? drive seems be okay for other things!
using: hd6970, 2x 1gig corsair dhx, tx750
any pointer/experience please
thank you

It should work out of the box.

Get the RAM tested with Memtest ,make sure the DVD you re installing from is ok and make sure the HDD hasn t got some bad blocks.

Otherwise try the 32 bit version of W7 ,you have just 2 gigs of RAM anyway.

Do not use a SSD with an old mobo.

many thanks Vezina for your input; i am a happy man!
the disk is good as i have already used it. the reason for my upgrade to win7 is the recent demise
of my asus p5q deluxe  :'(
i have 2 x 2gig ballistix from that build and can swap them over as i prefer the 64-bit option.
will follow your advice on re-testing the other elements.
as an additional point, would the low memory count be enough to cause the bluescreen alone?
thanks again.

It could be.
Never installed W7 X64 on a system with 2 Gigs of RAM so i can t tell for sure.
Put the 2X2 pair in and see how it goes.

I have used both W7 x32 and W7 x64 along the time and to be frank never seen performance gaps while playing games with them ,only more software/drivers issues with the x64 version :)
You should use what works if the x64 version refuses to work properly with your hardware configuration.
Unless you need to do some professional tasks for which a lot of  RAM is required and thus a x64 OS is needed.

...back again. having swapped out everything i can including mem, hard drives, dvdrom, cables, psu...and left the cmos
battery out for 4 hours, i am no further forward. found an old copy of Vista....same error. dug out a copy of windows xp pro s.p. 2
and it loaded without a problem. loaded chipset drivers, hd 6970 drivers....all good on same hardware?
any more suggestions before i assume that my board and chip are not compatible?
window 7 upgrades adviser for 570sli is a mixed bag; some do some don't...does not show ga-570sli at all

I find this rather strange.I was able to load Win 7 32 bit on a KT 333 machine in 2009.
That chipset of yours should work

Disable the on board peripheralls like LAN ,Audio and such and see what happens.Maybe it s some chip with problems
The board seems to have a Marvell chip turn it off.

Also try the storage controller with both AHCI and IDE Mode see what happens.

If XP works the hardware is perfectly fine.
