Want to put a GTX 650 into older system

Want to put a GTX 650 into older system
« on: June 15, 2013, 10:07:53 pm »
I have a machine that I'm trying to extend the life on, and am wanting to put a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 OC 2GB in an older system, this one with a PCI-E 1.0 on the mobo. I've been told that will work (with a handful of % loss in performance I can live with); need it for a freelance job. I also need to hook two DVI monitors up to it.

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 650 OC 2GB GDDR5 PCI-Express 3.0 2xDVI-D/HDMI/D-SUB Graphics Card GV-N650OC-2GI

http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeForce-PCI-Express-Graphics-GV-N650OC-2GI/dp/B00942TJXY/ref=pd_cp_pc_0

I have the two 6 pin power cables for it and a 500w power with 22amps on the 12v if I'm reading it right.

Windows 7 Professional 64bit SP1
Intel Xenon X3210 2.13ghz
ATI Radeon X1950 XTX 512mb GDDR4+DVI-I+DVI-I+VIVO
4x 2GB 1066 DDR2
P35 Neo2-FR w/ 2x PCI Express 16X

Hi rartist,

I find a infos about GV-N650OC-2GI :
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4360#ov
http://download.gigabyte.us/FileList/Manual/vga_manual_nvidia_e.pdf
Dual-link DVI-D*2
HDMI*1
D-Sub*1
Power requirement : 400W

Check page 4, before install graphics card....

You already have this graphics card? Or is it a planned purchase?
You want to go dual-monitor?
Have you all your two screens?

It is important do not install a last nVIDIA drivers.
Keep version 314.14 or 314.22
Last drivers cause many problems ....

What is your PSU ? Exact model? Probably is okay... just for verify....

I haven't purchased the monitor or graphics card, waiting until I can determine that the combination is going to work. I can use the second monitor with the GC I have now, but my current setup is causing problems so I want to move to something decent.

I have a graphics app (Modo) that has a openGL preview, and my ATI Radeon pretty much causes a show stopper when I use those features. I have a freelance job coming up soon so I want to get the new setup running before its time to work.

The PSU is a Earthwats EA500; 500w

I'm ready to buy if I can feel safe that its all going to work.

Now , it is important to have a Display Port on the monitor, if you have a projet purchase...

On the graphics card , it is important too , have a display port or mini display port.

So check it... Because the Display Port is more fast, and you have a higher resolution.

Maybe your PSU are limited... Probably is functionnal...
So if you want keep a hardware .... very long time, the best is change de PSU...
Maybe more later....

I have the card in and running on the included 306.23 drivers. I have the314.22 drivers downloaded, and the latest 320.18 on hand too. Another source tells me that the 320.18 should do ok. I can install the 314.22 drivers for now, and then see about the 320.18  in a while. I've seen some issues already in the included 306.23 drivers, so those need to go. No stability issues just some on screen mis-drawing things in Team Fortress 2.
