GA-78LMT-USB3 F4 - Issues with 'some' steam games
« on: August 25, 2013, 03:35:11 pm »
Hi

I am writing this because I have exhausted all my options.

'Some' steam games run like garbage (most notably Saints Row 3); when lots of objects are on the screen the frame rate drops. Below are my specs:
  • Mobo: GA-78LMT-USB - Bios F4
  • CPU: AMD FX-6100 (Not overclocked)
  • RAM: 2x4GB Crucial DDR3 1333Mhz (Not overclocked)
  • GFX Card: XFX Radeon HD 6850 - 1GB
  • PSU: 700 watt

The Board, CPU and RAM are upgrades which are up greaded from an AMD Athlon x4 2.6Ghz and I had no issues what so ever. I'm just a little frustrated especially when Metro 3030 runs well as well as Skyrim etc... If anyone can help me I would be grateful. If I cannot find a fix I will save up and get a new board.

Thank you

Vezina

Unfortunately some Gigabyte mobos throttle FX CPU-s a lot.

You will have to disable C1E ,CnQ and Turbo CPB and see what happens.

I would recommend a different board for that CPU.

BSOD-s under Steam could mean bad BIOS code ,nothing unusual with FX CPU-s with older AGESA code.

I would also take a look at the power supply as by the way you describe it it s some generic stuff.Get a 500W quality PSU in there if you have some no name firecracker.
That system of yours will not take more than 350W to work.

Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150

Luckily I don't get BSOD when playing steam games. Its a decent board; maybe just poorly configured.

It may be poorly configured but i tend to believe it s the way the BIOS does the job in culprit here.
There should be no choppiness.
Just disable what i ve told you and see how it works ,if it works ok like this then most probable the response time of the VRM is the problem here thus the need of proper board.
FX CPU-s demand proper VRM-s with fast reaction times to smoothly switch around between the power states.
A lot of bad image was created for FX CPU-s with improper boards.
A FX with six core or more needs a proper board by all means.

Keep in mind that by disabling CPB the Turbo core states ,there are 2 of them ,will not be reached anymore.
C1E should be turned off at all times.
