Hello everyone!

I am currently putting together a HTPC for music, video etc.
However, Windows 7 is "hanging" on every window for a couple of seconds, making the machine super slow.
I have tried to reinstall W7, updated BIOS to 1.5, and tweaked it's settings, but still no dice.
Does anyone have a tip on what to try, please?

Here's my specs...

All is running stock volt and speeds
Gigabyte F2A75M-D3H BIOS 1.5
AMD A8-6600K Black Edition QUADCORE APU Rev RL-A1 Stepping 1 Turbo Disabled
4x2Gb AMD PC310700G (666MHz) DDR3 Memory
Corsair 550W PSU
250Gb WD SATA and 70Gb TOSHIBA SATA HD
Hope someone can help me out. :-)

Just a couple of questions do you mean revison 1 with bios F5 on it? There isnt a bios on any revision called F1.5 so just clarify which revison of board you have and which bios. If it is rev 1.0 and u have bios F5 you can update the bios to most recent and see if it helps.

Besides disableing turbo make sure to go into bios and turn off any power saving features.

Hanging looks like HDD issue to me

You will need to tweak the BIOS a little.Set the LLC from Auto to medium first ,disable APM/Turbo if enabled
You can manually set a frequency for the CPU (you can try 4000Mhz)and CnQ will do the rest.Set the CPU NB memory controller as well to 20002100 Mhz manually to avoid it going up and down ,this may create slow downs as well.
Set RAM to 2T Command Rate and 9-9-9-27-36 timings ,make sure you set this for both channels as they are not linked in BIOS.

If you want just to play music ,movies and so on you can very well install OpenSUSE x64 with which you use Packman repositories ,the web is full of informations ,12.2 is a good one.Audacious as audio player ,XBMC ,VLC and Kaffeine KDE3 for DVD play. You can even transform this into a router along this running all in same time.

So start with the HDD first ,swap in another one.
Good Luck!

The power supply is "huge" for that system.Draws like 40W in idle and around 200W in load.

Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7

1.ASUS Sabertooth 990FX 2.0 + FX 6300 + H60
2.MSI A88X-G41 PC Mate + A8 5600K + Hyper TX 2
3.Gigabyte F2A75-D3H + A4 5300
4.ASUS AM1M-A + Athlon 5150

Thanks for the tips, guys! I'll try them out tonight and let you know what happens. ;-)

I meant Mobo rev 1.1 and bios v 1.5 Isn't that correct? It's the latest, but not the beta RC6. ;-)

Hope that helps!

Cheers!

Cool, I will try out these settings. Thanks alot! I will be using it for recording music through a EMU soundcard aswell as watching movies/listening to music, so Linux isn't really an option yet. However, I installet Linux Mint on it the first time, because that's what I had on my memorystick, and it was rock stable, with no hangs or any trouble. Makes me a bit concerned...... But I get along with a little help from you guys, I hope... ;-)
Have a great night, and I'll let you know how it goes down... ;-)

Best regards from
Ron

Hi again, sorry for the long time, have been away for a while.

Now, I have tried all there is to try (I think), but still have the same problem with windows going slow, and hanging for several seconds.

Why is Gigabyte making all these revisions on this particular board? (Rev 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 and 3.0)?
Could there be a fault in the motherboard's design, or something?

Very annoying and strange. First time I try another brand than ASUS, all goes wrong.... :-|

Does anyone have any more tips, other than all the help that I've got so far?

I really appreciate it, guys! ;-)
