X79-UP4 update to F4, now no screen saver

X79-UP4 update to F4, now no screen saver
« on: September 23, 2013, 08:33:49 pm »
I've got a weird one for you.  Now, I normally solve my own issues.  I've been building computers from parts for 24 years.  I've been working professionally in computer support for 16, 3 of that as a systems admin.  I have not been able to figure this one out.

I updated my bios to the latest F4 for the X79-UP4 using the @BIOS utility.  Suddenly, my screen saver, or the monitor power saver, would not kick on.  I tried unplugging the keyboard, mouse, and Razer Nostromo, but still no good.  I unplugged all my USB devices, still no good.  I formatted my main OS drive and reinstalled the OS, and even fresh out of the OS install, with no other device drivers installed, the screen saver still would not kick on.  I tried resetting the BIOS settings back to defaults, changing only the boot order and turning off the on-board sound, and still no good.

I'm at my wits end.  Any ideas?

(Other hardware: Core i7 3930k, GSkill Trident X 32GB memory, EVGA Geforce GTX680, Sound Blaster Z, OCZ Vertex 4 256GB main drive in port 1, OCZ Vertex 4 128GB drive for games on port 2, Mushkin 60GB SSD on port 3 for swap file, Seagate 2TB drive for storage on port 4, LG BluRay burner on port 5.  Keyboard is Logitech G510, Logitech G700 mouse, Razer Nostromo, USB 3.0 2TB external hard drive for backups.  HP ZR2740w monitor.  in case any of that matters.)

I've got two new symptoms that I hadn't noted before that go with this:

1. my keyboard will work during POST and loading the OS, and even let me enter the password, but once in the OS will not work until I unplug it and plug it back in.  I have this problem with my main keyboard, a Logitech G510, and my two alternate keyboards, a Logitech K200 and a cheapo generic USB keyboard.  So, it's not my keyboard.  It also happens with or without the Razer Nostomo plugged in.  The Nostromo seems to work just fine.

2. when I initially power back up from a completely power down, the system automatically enters the BIOS setting screen without me hitting the delete key.  I have tried exiting both with and without saving, but it still comes back every single cold boot.

I am seriously considering buying a new motherboard now, an Asus this time, perhaps the Sabertooth or the new Deluxe, but not another Gigabyte if things like this are going to keep happening.

If you didn't save the old bios you are screw. There is no bios to go back too. I have the F3t bios.

That is why I never update unless I really have too. The new bios only is there support the new CPU.

Now what should somebody do, send the board back to gigabyte. That is all you can do or see if support will send you a older bios.

I had hoped the F4 bios would have fixed some of the other issues I had with this board.  I haven't tried going back to the F2 bios I had before.  I guess I could try this.  I was hoping there was another fix for this, though.

The thing I don't like is why are Gigabyte not showing the older bios for some of the newer boards? You are saying you had the F2 and I have the F3t.

But they are not showing on the bios web at Gigabyte. They are only showing the newest bios F4 and that is it.

I did manage to find another download location for the F3 bios, but I'm not sure how trustworthy the source would be.

I tried to flash the F3u bios to it, but got a message that the motherboard is protected and can only update to the latest from Gigabyte.  I tried the official F3 and the F2 that I saved from before, but no luck.  The flash programs won't allow a backstep.  Anyone know a way to force them?

The only thing you can do now is call Gigabyte support. This is sad day that you can't go back on bad bios update.

That is when you have a problems that you could always go back. Now I know why they are only showing the one bios.

I think it is time to start looking for another MB company. This is going to shot themselves in the head if they pulling this crap.

Good Luck dgingeri and keeps us in forum on what is happening too.

When you update the bios are you using the Q-Flash route to update the bios? Or are you using the windows utility?

I tried both.  I've been looking for a DOS based utility, if necessary, or any switches I might be able to add to the Windows app to make it able to back-date the bios, but I've not found anything for it.

Gigabyte support finally contacted me and hooked me up with a different version of @BIOS (2.32) that allowed me to flash the older version back to the board.  It worked.  I now have full use of my computer again.

I bought a new PC with this board and a GTX780 3Gb Graphics card. F4 was already on the bord. No screen saver, no energy saver or sleep...
Now what to do?
