Are you using latest drivers for everything and latest BIOS?

Thanks.

I tried his by going to thisn site and downloading the latest drivers for the 4800 series. I installed them however I can't remember why, but I had to reinstall the drivers from the CD for some reason.

Is there a place in the CCC where it can find the files and upgrade itself?  Otherwise what files should I upgrade to.

The Bios is new as is the Asus P5Q3 mobo.

This is driving me crazy as it just happens at anytime.  Anything esle I can check?

Thanks again

This black screen and auto reboot has happened at least 30 tiems today, even when idle and nothing happening.

I just did a memtest86 3.5 and it got to around 4% then rebooted every time.

Does this mean the memory in the 4850 is no good or are there other reasons why I cannot test the memory.

Thanks

oz

if memtest reboots then it's rather RAM issue but not the one from the VGA but the one installed in the MB.

what is your exact VGA model? i mean GV-R....
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/VGA/Default.aspx

generally this kind of error (Event Source:  ACEEventLogSource) is caused by ATI driver problem

but...maybe it's worth to upgrade the bios for the VGA?

Hi, Thanks for the info.

I tested both 2GB ram sticks in the Asus P5Q3 mobo and they both passed separately but when I put them both in it once again booted around 3-4%.

I am not sure which is my GVR as there doesn't seem to be anywhere that gives that info.  The CD that came with it just says Vers 1.0  ATI Radeon 4850 Series  with some number 12DC1-HD48505-10R.

It is a 1GB and the manual says GV-R4850C-1GH  GV-R485ZL-512H  and  GV-R485MC-1GH

Device Mgr says Drivers 8.690.0. 12/11/09
Bios 113-BA0102-Xxx
Memory 1024
Hope this help you give me some dircetion.

Thanks again.

So with both sticks in it doesn't boot and fails memtest?

HI,

Yes it boots up okayto XP but every now and then it goes black and reboots up etc etc. It is doing it now sometimes in 10 mins or so time after boot. Very random.

It also boots to the memtest-86 CD and starts the test but with the 2 sticks in, it just reboots a few seconds into the test. With each stick by itself, it goes through and passes the tests.

Thanks,

oz

as with only one RAM stick it works OK then maybe it's problem of RAM and MB incompatibility?
change RAM or mobo  ;D ;D ;) into other vendor.

and definitely better check this VGA in other PC to sort it out if it's related to VGA or not (it seems it's not)

Yes you could be right. although it was all working fine for around 4 months.

I had a crash and had to reinstall everything with new XP,  this time SP3 so it could be that as well.

I have uninstalled all the ATI drivers, did a DriverSweep and it is just on regular Windows VGA now and has been on for a few hours without it going off.

I will leave it for a few more hours to see and if not then I know it must be either the Radeon HD4850 or thew drivers for it as that is all that I have turned off.

I still have the 2 RAM sticks in as well.  I may do a memtest with it as it is to see if the card had something to do with that crashing with the 2 stick in.

Thanks for the help.

I will keep on reporting until I get it resolved in case others have a similar problem.

Any idae what drivers and Catalyst version I should use?  I belive a new one was out just a few weeks ago.

Indeed judging by your error log, it does look like its the ATI drivers at fault!. Main System RAM would crash out with a different error!

Hi,

I emptied out the drivers, did a Drriver Sweep then installed the latest 10-1 Catalyst drivers.

I have had it running now 20 odd hours and it is looking stable whereas previously it would have gone black and rebooted 50 times I'm sure. I did very little work on it, just idle.

When I tried to do an Ontrack data recover from one (USB2)ext HD to another ext (eSATA), it did go black and reboot, but only once.

So my gut feeling is that it is maybe something to do with memory.  When it needs it, it is not there.

Any ideas as I have to fix this as this is the box I do my video editing on and it is under stress then.

Thanks,

oz

Thanks.

Do you mean the bios of the 4850 or the box bios.

If so, which parts would you like me to get?

Seems like one cannot print out the box bios and it is so big, so many screens.

PS.  It has rebooted again without anyone touching it a few tims during ethe last 12 or so hours.

Random rebooting could be caused by an unstable PSU, have you got a spare one to try?
