bios Virus -GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3

Hi guys, well it finally seems I have been taken down by a virus that’s proving detrimental.

It started like. I was converting a wmv. file which wasn't playing correctly as wmv. and then I obtained the blue screen of death while in process.

I quickly restarted the machine and upon restart I didn’t catch it until it was too late that an update to the bios was happening and before I knew it, it was successful. I also didn't know whether to pull the plug while it was updating but now that I know whatever came from that video file infected the bios.
The hard disk was failing to load under any circumstance. I then decided to wipe the disk and

I have reinstalled windows 7 on 2 different SSD’s multiple times but there is no stable joy and most of the time it is hit or miss whether I can get past certain parts of the windows installation. The main thing being – “a disk read error occurred”

When redoing windows after the 1st half of the installation. it restarts and then proceeds at the start of the install steps instead of moving on to the next part of the install.

If I turn the pc off for an hour then come back it will start throwing up those errors – “a disk read error occurred” f I do make it to the end of an install.
I have taken the battery out

I have tried flashing the bios which throws up the “bios ID check error” (I am using the correct update)

The mother board speaker is now also making new erratic noises that I’ve never heard before when it tries loading up.

Usually when something messes up it’s quickest to just reinstall everything but I can't even do this now.
With this type of virus I have no experience.

Help please!

BIOS Recover Method Via Manually Invoking BACKUP BIOS Auto-Recovery
Using Power Supply - On/Off Switch

It is possible to make the BIOS Auto-Recovery kick in (Dual BIOS) and re-flash the MAIN BIOS with the contents of the BACKUP BIOS.

This is a simple and easy method for anyone to try before having to resort to other more difficult methods, or a RMA.

1. Shut off the power supply using the switch on the back of the PSU, wait 10-15 seconds.
 2. Press and hold the case Power On swtich, then while still holding turn on the power supply from the switch on the rear.
 3. Still holding the case power on switch, the board will start, once it does release the case power on switch and shut off the power supply via the switch on the read of the unit. (Do the latter two parts as quickly as you can once the board starts)
 4. The board will shut down.
 5. Turn the power supply back on using the switch on the rear of the unit.
 6. Turn on the motherboard by pressing the case power on button.

Once the board starts this time you should see the Gigabyte splash screen, or POST page, then the Auto-Recovery from Dual BIOS will kick in. You will see a checksum error, and then recovery from BACKUP BIOS will begin. Once it is done reboot your machine and enter the BIOS and load optimized defaults then save/apply/reboot back to BIOS.

Now you are done, and will be using whatever BIOS was in your BACKUP BIOS, From there you can attempt whatever you were previously trying, or update your BIOS to the latest version.

thanks for your reply,

So I "think" I have done your instructions right but I get nothing.

Just to clarify when you say

- 3. Still holding the case power on switch, the board will start, once it does release the case power on switch and shut off the power supply via the switch on the read of the unit. (Do the latter two parts as quickly as you can once the board starts)

"Read of the unit" you are still talking about the switch on the power supply?

anyway I treated the read of the unit as the power supply switch but as I said nothing happened.
Do you know of a video that explains this process so i can see if it maybe something to do with my timing etc..

Also I have done some research finding this link which explains the dual bios feature on the motherboard is supposed to update automatically - http://www.gigabyte.com/microsite/55/tech_081226_dualbios.htm

Many thanks!

It does but as you have a virus in your first bios i am not expecting it to act normal per se. Why i wanted to give you another way to try. Somehow to kick in the back up bios it has to detect trouble with your main bios i am expecting the virus to cover this up if it is truly a bios virus.

So you need a way to kick in the back up virus am trying to think of a way you can mess up the original bios enough to kick in the back up other than sending it in for warranty. I know there is another way as i have used it but it might take absic or dark mantis to post it until or unless i can find the way to do it first and post it.

Ok,

I managed to install windows 7 and then install Q bios to try and install a new bios to override the corrupted version.
Form this i had realize that  I WAS using the wrong bios as their is a version of this board without the F in it see

So uploading F14b bios succeeded but then upon restart the flash has made the computer dead.

all there is a black screen. No power to the mouse or keyboard.

The fans are spinning on the graphics card but nothing. I have swapped thing in an out but no change. Something is now seriously wrong due to this flash which was successful.

My problems mimics this persons here also - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1808540/gigabyte-990fxa-ud3-bios-updated-screen-black-flashing-underscore.html

Take your battery out for about 8 hours then restart it see what happens it has worked for a few people. At that point ur back up bios should kick in i am suprised it hasnt already. As you had the wrong version the first time i would triple check to make sure you used right one this time.

I doubt the BIOS got infected.
A proper Clear CMOS should of removed the problem.
It s extremely hard to flash a modded BIOS on this boards what to say about some random virus code. The Back up BIOS would have Kicked back instantly

Reflash with the HDD-s and SSD-s disconnected.
The virus may have destroyed the SSD though.
