Ga-78LMT-S2P overheating/temp problem
« on: December 12, 2013, 10:33:56 am »
Hello. I'd like some help regarding certain mobo temperatures. I'm not too tech savvy and although I've searched the net and this forum for something related, results where unsatisfactory.

My build:

Mobo GA-78LMT-S2P Rev. 4.0

CPU AMD FX 4100 3.6GHz with Stock Cooler

GPU Radeon HD7790 OC 2GB DDR5 128-bit

PSU Segotep ATX-500WH

RAM KingMax 4GB DDR3 1333MHz

HDD Samsung SP2504 250 GB SATA

Everything is at stock settings. Apart from the GPU which came with a factory OC, nothing else has been OC'ed. Also this issues appeared with my old GPU as well.

My problem is overheating. Whenever I start a demanding video game, after a set amount of time ( around an hour or two ) the mobo speaker starts buzzing. Initially there are a few random buzzes then it eventually goes on into one continuous buzz. Apart from the fact that it is god awful annoying, it is still a warning sign. Also, I don't know if it is relevant or not but whenever I alt tab of the game I'm running at the time of the buzzing, it usually stops right after.

I've checked various temperature monitoring software products (CPUID HWMonitor, AMD Overdrive, EasyTune6, SpeedFan)  and they do confirm some high temps.

I've posted some screen caps with the temps in question. These are only idle temps though, but I've highlighted the ones that do go up.

When the buzzing starts, the CPU temp is around 60 degrees in HWMonitor/EasyTune6, and TMPIN 1 on HWMonitor is between 65-75+ degrees. I don't know what TMPIN1 stands for. I've looked in my mobo's users manual and found nothing.

However, I did not apply any sort of thermal paste on the cpu when I installed it. I didn't even knew such a thing existed until fairly recently. The AMD user manual says it's needed and I am planning on getting some thermal paste in the near future.

So, I'm wondering if the lack of thermal paste is the cause of my problems or is it something else. It seems to me that 20~30+ degrees is a bit too much, even without the thermal paste but then again, I am no hardware wizard.

Thank you in advance, any help is welcome.

It's been like this for over a year.

Update:

So, I've turned on my pc and I get high temps right after startup.

I'm guessing that is not due to lack of thermal paste.

a CPU runs at high temp even when idle.  it's the heatsink/fan that brings the temp down but heatsink/fan isn't enough to obtain low temps.

you need thermal paste to bring the temps down to normal

I have had a FX 4100 one year and something ago and at that time the cooler was quite nice.It was made of Aluminium and had a Copper core.
Does yours have this ?!
It was one of the coolest CPU-s i ve had ,touching the heatsink of the cooler with the hand was barely warm at touch in full load even overclocked to 4Ghz.

If the cooler is AL only then you really need a new one as the noise will always be high with such due to the fan.

So buy something like a Cooler Master TX 3 and install it.Cheap fix.

The CPU takes 75 Celsius so no damage ocures at 60.It s the noise that is annoying.

Also install under Windows 7 the 2 updates stated in my signature it will help with performance and power management.
Techpower up has them available easy for download.

Also remove the software you are using once you get the cooler it will create issues on your PC ,both AMD overdrive and Gigabytes software tend to affect performance or create issues with sound.

For monitoring use HW Info and Afterburner ,together will show you in OSD any info you want CPU included.HW INfo must be linked to the Afterburner statistic server ,there are guides for that on the web.

Over & Out !

AMD FX (APU-s included) users should install - KB2645594 & KB2646060 under Windows 7
