MA790GP-UD4H wont do 16x pci-e.
« on: March 01, 2010, 11:12:53 pm »
specs
MA790GP-UD4H
2x2gb ddr2 1066
phenom 2 quad 2.8 Deneb (O.C. 3.5)
4x 7200 sata 500gb (raid 10 array)
gtx 280 bfg std

Hopefully sombody out there can tell me what im doing wrong. No matter what i try gpu-z and cpu-z both show my graphics card linked at 8x pci-e.
I have the card in the 16x slot. I have found and changed every bios setting to no avail. every setting with and without O.C. My 8x slot is empty yet i cant get 16x to work at all. i have tried every bios up to my current (7a beta) but nada. I do I.T. work for a living and this seems like a bios/mb issue. if not please somebody school this confused I.T. guy.

Thank you,
Yesse

It has 16X slot but only 8X link, you cannot change that
unless you buy UD5 motherboard.
UD5 is the lowest board with 16X link, all below UD5 have 8X link :o
Giga GA-MA790FXT-UD5P, Phenom II 945 X4, Gskill 4GB, Coolermaster, Sapphire HD4870, Velociraptor HDD, 7 fans, Antec 550+, Acer 24" LCD. "I tried Asus, then I bought a real motherboard."

Thank you for the reply

Might be that is so but the box and the manual claim 16x pci-e when 1 gfx card is placed in the 16x.
Is this a case of false advertisement? its very stange to me but it is suposed to do 16x.
can you cite something that says it wont.

look at the gig spec page
http://www.gigabyte-usa.com/Products/Motherboard/Products_Spec.aspx?ProductID=3004

this in particular
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1) (Note 4)
1 x PCI Express x16 slot, running at x8 (PCIEX8_1)
(The PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX8_1 slots support ATI Hybrid CrossFireX technology and ATI CrossFireX technology, and conform to PCI Express 2.0 standard.)
3 x PCI Express x1 slots
2 x PCI slots
(Note 4) When two graphics cards are installed, the PCIEX16_1 slot will operate at uup to x8 mode.

I hope this helps

Hi, have you checked that the HT Link width is set to 16 bit in BIOS? As you are OCing your CPU this may have been altered by bios if left in auto mode.
Remember, when all else fails a cup of tea and a good swear will often help! It won't solve the problem but it will make you feel better.

Set ht bus to 16 now, was set to auto.
Still at 8x pci-e link sadly.
Does any one have my model mb? can you confirm 16x pci-e setting with gpu-z or cpu-z?
Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Just got word from tech support

Dear customer,
If you have add on PCIE graphic card, check in bios under advance bios features, set graphic mode to UMA + sideport enable, enabbe surround view, set init display to PEG, make sure remove onboard graphic driver from windows, and make sure update latest add on PCIE graphic driver for Win7 64bit suppport.

So i had allways disabled that because i dont use the onboard.
hope this helps any1 with a simalar problem
