Z87X-D3H and Windows 8.1: From BSOD to USB issues

Hello everyone,

I build a new gaming config around christmas running:
 - i5-4670K
 - GA-Z87X-DH3
 - Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3
 - Samsung 240GB SSD
 - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 4GB GV-N770OC-4GD
 - Windows 8.1

I was running the F5 version of the BIOS for a few months but suffered from frequent BSODs IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR. In order to solve those I updated my BIOS to a newer version (F8 at the time). It indeed fixed the BSOD issues but now my USB peripherals (keyboard and mouse) suffer from intermitent freezes (as in every 2 to 30min, mouse and keyboard will freeze at the same time for about 500ms to 2s). I tried other BIOS versions (from F7 to F9a) and have the same issue on all of them. I even tried the F5 again, the BSODs returned but the USB3.0 issues disappeared.

The problem is that I really enjoy Windows 8.1 so I don't know what to do... I really suffer from thoses issues and it feels like I went out of the frying pan into the fire. I can't play games consistently (which is why I built the rig in the first place).

I bought an USB2.0 PCI card to try and bypass the issue but it is unusable (registers keyboard strokes every second only and mouse lags very badly).

Are those knows issues? Are there any known solutions?

Sorry but Going to Win 7 will likely fix all of the problems.

I finally accepted that and did a clean install earlier today. I went back to Win 7 Pro 64. However the Mouse/Keyboard issue still persists. I don't really know what to do here. I'm 90% sure that the mobo is defective because I don't see where else the issue could be coming from (since only the USB devices are affected an there are no BSOD/screen or sound freezes or anything like that), but those 10% uncertainty prevent me from ordrering a new one.

And I have no idea what I would replace it with.

I use almost the same hardware (only difference being AMD instead of NVidia graphics) with Windows 8.1 and have had no issues with USB devices at all. I also use the F8 bios.

This driver, intel_chipset_9.4.4.1006 contained usb fixes and is working for me with Win 7.
It may be newer than the one you are using.

Also, Your board has 2 USB3 motherboard headers. USB3.0 1 (colored red) and USB3.0 2
One of those headers supplies the only USB3 that comes directly from the Intel Chipset. The other header feed comes through a Renesas hub.
On my UDH5 the USB3.0 2 is the direct feed from the Intel chipset. Yours is probably the same (try both to be sure). It is possible the direct feed could solve the problem if the above driver doesn't do it.

All of your rear panel USB3 ports come from the Renesas Hub. The 2 ports next to the PS/2 connector are USB 2.0
Since you have 3 different sources of USB you might as well try them all to see if there is any difference before pulling the motherboard.

You board offers the same patches for windows 8

If you look at the Specs page under USB (your model). 

While the hotfixes are marked as USB 3.0 hibernate compatibility, the updates themselves contain several roll ups which may or may not address the behavior you were experiencing. 

Note: Does not apply to w7, but you said you have the same issues, so its likely related to hardware compatibility and is OS agnostic.
