What's the point of Modified Bios's ?

Hia, there's a thread on Tweaktown with modified Bios's http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/48085-gigabyte-modified-bios.html

From what I can tell, apart from the splash logo and CPU microcode etc, these modified bios's just contain different driver versions.

I thought one updated the drivers in the OS once installed? At least that's what I've always done.

For example:

Quote
GA-X79-UD5 BIOS F14b mod
Modified with :
Intel Legacy RAID SATA 11.6.0.1702 to 12.7.0.1936
Intel UEFI SataDriver 11.6.0.1702 to 12.7.0.1936
Intel RSTe RAID SataDriver 3.7.0.1049 to 3.8.0.1029
Intel RSTe EFI SataDriver 3.7.0.1049 to 3.8.0.1029
Intel Boot Agent GE 1.3.95 to 1.5.48
Intel GigabitLanX64 5.1.00 to 6.0.24
Marvell 88SE91xx Adapter 1.0.1.0025
CPU Microcode Pack (with 6D710 and 6E416)
ME firmware 8.1.51.1471
Modified splash logo 2

Is there any difference or advantages in updating drivers at bios level Vs updating them in the OS?

Surely just flashing the bios with the latest official version (or Beta version if one really wants) is enough?

Thanks,
Ali.
